Late London advices report the withdrawal from the Bank of Engiand to-day of £89,000; also that the governors of the institution at a speciay meeting advanced the bank rate to 6 per cent, an imcrease of 1 per cent since Saturday. This course was not unexpected by well informed bankers, and it w therelore not strange that both goid and exchange should have followed the advance. The former may now be shipped, and there Is pro- bability of a considerable drain. If it should take | place it will not only euhance the price of gold, but of money. There is likely to be @ coilision between the Sheriff, the City Marshals and some of the Judges. of the Marine Court, This trouble arises out o: order recentiy issued by four (a majority) of #1 Judges of the Court, directing that all processes ua- der their jurisdiction should be executed by she’ Sheriff of the city and county of New York. Hith- erto the marshals have had almost entire control of this business, These gentlemen are thirty-five in number ana appointed for three years by the Mayor, who of course has. power of removal for cause. When Mayor Wickham comes into offica & Dumber of changes Will probably be made. Some 01 these marshals make {rom $5,000 to $10,000 a year, and the position is consequently one of emol- ument, The Marine Court is, however, their main source of revenue, as the business of the Civil Judicial istrict Courts, ten im number, amounts to very hittle, the jurisdiction being lmited. ‘In the Marine Court ap immense amount of business is trans- acted in the matter of executions property, attachments, orders of arrest. “Ghent Conner claims that tne patronage of his oftice ts not at all what it ought to be, and that the great responsibilities witn which he is charged in his oficial capacity demand an equal amount of in- fluence and recompense, In an attidavit ap- pended to the statement of Mr. Jotun Kelly, and publishea in the HERALD some time since, in answer to Mayor Havemeyer, the Snerifl alleged Vhat, instead of making money, he was fast losing. On the otner hand, the marshals assert that Suerttf Couner’s oitice is very lucrative—at least worth between $100,000 aud $200,000 per annum— and that the gentleman ought to ve catisded with this income, Without taking the bread and butter Out of the moutns of officials wo Lave scarcely anything else to depend upon, It ts understood that Sherif Conner will appoint two additional deputies in the Marine Court shogid the order be maintained by the higher courts ing the patronage to his office.
