FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Men. A FIRM STOCK MARKET. Improvement in Bonds and Invyest- ment Securities, GOLD STEADY AT 1101-4 Money More Active and Showing a Tem- porary Advance, WALL STREET, TUESDAY, Noy, 10—0 P, M. ‘The frmneas that has recently characterized the | There | market continued to exhibit itself to-day. Were the usual Quctuations, but the undertone ‘Was well sustained until nearly the end, when, in obcdience to some pressure, there was a trifling decline in prices. A somewhat thorough | inquiry | elicits the fact that considerable buying has been | done by outsiders in anticipation of a brighter tu- , ture, and how well their judginent 18 established may %e inferred from the following extracts from @ portion of the recent correspondence of a prom- anent banker which we are permitted to use :— CINCINNATI, Noy. 6, 1874, We must report a petter general trade in this city, and there are strong evidences springing up that we are not completely dead, Increased con- fidence, receipts at the banks of more money in 8mall lots, and confessions on all sides are gradu- ay being made that alter all there is some trade OnICAco, Noy. 6, 1874, We are giad to report a decided tuange tor the Detter in business here, and @ more hopeful teel- ing prevails, PHILADELPHIA, Nov, 7, 1574, It appears to us that the political revolution of fast Tuesday ts the final cleansing: of which the country was in need; the new year, we believe, ‘Will show at any rate great improvement in busi ness, LANCASTER, Pa., Nov. 7, 1874, Peed business men were eXpress more confl- CLEVELAND, Obio, Nov. 6, 1874. Just at present {need considerable money nere, $8 the brokers’ business has ted up suddenly and trade seems to have receivedf new impetus, The foregoing extracts, illustrating, as they do, a healthier and more hopeful situation, likewise | Justify the prophecy that unless some untoward event occurs in financial circles—aud there is cer- tainly no indication of any mishap—the incoming year will witness onr entry upon a career of prosperity that will compensate for much that we have lost, although our business may be done upoa @ lower basis. Capital ts even now begin- ning to apeak with 3 voice that carries no uncertain sound. It 18 needless to analyze the stock market or do more than indicate the chief movements. Erle was excep- tionally strong in response to an improvement in London, Atiantic and Pacific Telegraph showed signs of lameness which were ascribed to the de- Jay and uncertainty attaching to the laying of the new cable, late news pointing to the necessity of buoying the same in order to repair defects. It gained a trifle, however, on the closing prices last night. Pacific Mail, St. Paul, Hannibal and St. Joseph and Union Pacific were lower. .,, C, and I, C. received more than usual attention, Lake Shore moved up to 8234, but subsequently, owing Wa desire to realize for a turn, went off to 8144. THE TRANSACTIONS amounted to 191,000 shares, which were distrib- uted among the principal stocks as follows:—New York Central and Hudson, 2,400; Erie, 14,200; Lake Shore, 45,100; Nortnwestern, 6,500; Northwestern preferred, 300; Rock Island, .2,200; Pacific Mail, 17,900; St. Pauw, 5,200; St. Paul preferred, 200; Ohios, 23,800; Western Union, 15,400; Wabash, 33,800; Union Pacitic, 32,800; ., vc. and I. The feeling with reference to the future of this market is about evenly divided, there being no basis upon which calcula. | tions ure made other than phat which attaches to Jocal demand and speculation. The course of Bpecie abroad is not fully understood here; but | there are sagacious business men who argue that the withdrawal of bullion from the Bank of Eng- | Jand and a consequent increase in the Bank rate mus: produce corresponding strength in America. ‘The rates paid for carrying were land 2 percent | to flat. TUESDAY, Nov. 10—6 P, M. ‘here was but little change in the commercial status to-day, if we may except an increase tn the demand for a lew commodities, the general merchandise markets being dull and trregular, with uncertain valuations. In some cases various expedients are resorted to to induce a freer move- ment of merchandise, but the effort is nsuauy futile. Dry goods were dull, and there was little or no improvement except the checking of the decline in some kinds of both cotton and woollen goods through the decrease in the manufacture May be so constrned, On’Change things were, as usual, a little mixed. Flour was still doll, with prices generally in favor of the buyer. Wheat was dail and declining, except lor winter, which seems to have suddenly grown into favor, prob- ably on account of the better condition of the new crop, coupled with the extremely low prices current, which appreciated today under a good demand. Corn was steady, with a tair inquiry for export. Oats were still indemana and stulstrong. Barley was in demand and firmer for choice Canada. Whiskey was the turn dearer. Pork was firmer. Lard was fairly active and firmer on future contracts. Spot lard was nominal being held above the market. Bacon was strong, while cut meats were depressed and hard of sale. Freights were steady. Cotton was only in moderate demand and favored the purchaser both tor ‘'spot” and “farare."” Groceries remained dull and withoutappreciable change Bast India goods wore quiet. Metals, gener- ally speaking, were doll. Petroleam wasinactive and nominally unchanged. Naval stores were quiet and steady. Wool was moderately active and firm.
