8 NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1874.-TRIPLE SHExr. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL A Quiet Day in the Stock Market. ae MONEY ABUNDANT, BUT STRONGER. Railroad and Government Bonds in Good Demand. THE COURSE OF VALUES. renner | WALL STREET, \ THURSDAY, Oct, 22—¢ P. ‘The financial situation 1s so little changed to-day | that much comment need not be added to that | which has already been made. The feature of the | market was the continued fight between the bulls and bears over Lake Shore, witn a result at the close in favor of the long-waisted bears, the price Baving declined to the lowest figure of the da: No new short interest of important dimensions was created in this stock; but, on the contrary, & | large number of shares were unloaded upon par- | tdes seeking to cover, It remains to be seen | wheiber there are enough legitimate buyers left | to sustain the best prices made to-day, or whether there was any other object in the advance than to market the stock at the highest figure that could be speculatively established. No prediction can be safely made, for there may be an ad- vance or recession to-morrow, because whenever & party !s sufficiently strong to match orders any momentary change may occur to unsettle calcula- {3 tions. The strength of Lake Shore to-day, bow- | ever, was not communicated to other stocks. | They remained barely steady, as will be seen by | reierence to the gains and losses of the day, It | wiil be observed that the greatest decitne of the | day was in Lake Shore and Union Pacitic, the first | | trom 80% to 8034 and the latter trom 34% to 344. GAINS AND LOSSES. The following figures will show the changes that | Rave occurred since the sag last night:— 1 Mj; Union Pacific, %. The stiffness in the rate is doubtless due to the redemption process that Ras recently been commenced at Washington, which ts gradually calling in bills. Foreign Exchange was firm at $4 %5 a $4 85 for | prime bankers’ sixty days’ sterling, and $4 8834 @$488% fordemand. There was more inquiry for bills to-day, especially for demand and cables, | owing to the arrival of securities (rom Europe by | recent steamers. | It 1s said by bankers that we may look for larger | activity in money and higher rates of mterest. THE UNITED STATES TREASURY. | The internal revenue receipts to-day were | $350,000. The customs receipts were $276,000, The mational bank notes received for redemption | amounted to $190,000. The Assistant Treasurer to-day paid out $8,000 on account of interest and | $6,000 tn redemption of five-twenty bonds. customs receipts for the week ending October 17 | | i were $2,500,000. GOVERNMENT DONDS were comparatively stroug. The business also | Was somewhat more active. [he transactions were | larger than usual, although made up in small | amounts. THE FOREIGN MARKET, London advices indicate general steadiness for American securities, with but a single exeeption, to wit: New fives, which declined to 103. No cause or explanation is given. The Bank of England directors to-day did not change the rate of dis | count. The decrease in bullion for the week was | £610,000 sterling, and the proportion of bank re- serve (o liabilities is 26% percent, against 35% | 300 last week. SOUTHERN BONDS were comparatively quiet, no important sales being reported. Judging from the dealings at the Board there is a growing indication to manipulate this class of securities until they are placed upon @ secure foothold. Carpet-baggers have deranged | Valnes, but when itis shown to the satisfaction of | the moneyed men of the country that the promises of the Various Commonweaiths will be fulfilled and that State Legisiatures will provect State honor, | arrange for the payment of interest and prove ability every year to promptiy meet the payment of their obligations, there will certainly be no bar | to the advance of nearly every Southern State | bond.
