PINANCIAL AND COMMBROIAL The Stock Market—Prices Still Declining. GOLD FIRM AT 110 A 110 1-8, Government and Railroad Bonds Steady. TuEspay, Oct, 20—6 P, The market vo-day was without feature, except that losses are recorded on transactions in a ma- Jotity of active stocks, No special reason, now- ever, can be given for tbe result. Certain parties are reported to de selling ‘short’ in anticipation ofa lower market, but it is unsafe to prejudge the effect of their work, Other parties may be ac tively engaged in taking all that is offered at the prevailing low figures with a view to future profit. While it is trae that certain stocks aro weak, it i8 equally true tnat those who Bave controlled them in the past have shown ® Willingness to purchase. Quietly this process bas been going on. Bear and bull are, therefore, maintaining their old antagonistic relationship, and it is not unlikely, a8 a cunsequence, that we shall witness consideravie fuctuations—first de- pression, then a corresponding advance coincident with what may be the improving condition of the dountry, The immediate market does not reward bthers than those who, standing on the floor of the Stock Exchange, can watch ana avail tnem- selves of the fuctuations of an hour; but there 18 stil! an opportunity for outside operators who de- pead on general results and have the patience to Wait to acquire decided profits, While the com- mercial situation 1s somewhat discouraging, it is not at its worst, and except in such stocks oa are positively bad, we may look for a sharp recovery Within the next sixty days, GAINS AND LOSSES. ‘The gains of the day as compared with last night bave been insignificant, only two stocks partici. pating in the improvement.
