FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL | The Stock Market Still Under a Cloud—Another Decline. THE REPORT OF WESTERN UNION Woney Basy—Gold Steady and Government and Railrond Bonds Firm. WALL STREuT, WEDNESDAY, Oct. M—6 P, ut The description of the stock market to-day varies but slightly from that of yesterday. Prices were generaily lower at the opening than at the close last night, and beyond very ind:tferent and unsuggestive fluctuations, no special interest attaches to the immediate situation. Specula- tion in Erte was the principal feature of the day, the prices in London exercising their usnal con- trolling influence here, but Lake Shore, Western Union, Northwest and Union Pacilic likewise came 4 lor @ fair share of business, In the absence of rumors or disaster Wall street is dependent en- turely upon the work of cliques, and these in turn depend on the success attending their efforts in attracting operators who may iollow the given or announced bent of trade. The effect of the West- ern elections and their possible influence upon the financtal situation was scarcely discussed, q Istered, 11134 @ 111% ; do. do., coupon, 111% @ 112% ; do, fives, 1881, registered, 112% & 112%; do. do., d0., coupon, 112% a 1124. WEDNESDAY, Oct. 14-6 P. M, The merchandise markets were irregular and generally dull, though there were some note- worthy exceptions. Flour was quiet but steady, Wheat was inactive, but prime spring was held firm; shippers’ limits were too low to admit or business. Winter wheat was unsettled and lower. Corn was in fair request for speculation, but there was no export demand save at decidedly lower prices than those current, which showed a marked decline from yesterday’s quotations. Oats were dull, Whiskey was steady. Pork was dull and lower, but still nomial, Lard was easier and nominal. Cotton in moderate demand, but easier, Groceries, generally speaking, were quiet, but without change, being firmly held. Freights were quiet, with rates for berth accommodation firm. Petroleum ruled firmer under light offerings and a better demand. Naval stores were quiet, but firm. Corrzz.—The market for Rio was quiet, but firm.
