1 THE EPISCOPALIAN Proceedings ¥e i ta Indian Dep- uty Admitted—Dr. Noah H. Schenck Shakes Up the American Fagle~What the Noble Bird Thinks of the “Amert- can Church” Present and Prospective, The Convention met yesterday at the usual hour, The religious exercises were conducted by Drs. Stone, of Delaware, and Fulton, of Easton, and Bishop McCosker, of Michizan. ‘The Rey. Samuel D, Hioman, the renowned missionary to the iudians, with the Rev, Paul Mazakute, the first Dakota Presbyter of the Protestant Episcopal Church, appeared as depa- tues from the Judian Mission and were received. ‘The Rev. Mr. Mazakute delivered an address that would have done credit to auy college graduate who heard it, After expressing his gratitude at the position be now held tn the Convention, he remarked that when he first listened to the words of the Church, many years ago, te never expected to stand in such an assemby, and his brethren, who had been very poor and badly of, bad never hoped to be-so honored. noss, but had been drought into the light. The In- dian Church would be greatly strengthened when be reported his reception by the Convention. In conclusion he said, “I shake bands with you all’? ils remarks were interpreted by his colleague, Mr. Hinman. The order of the day was called for—namely, the @iscussion on the confirmation of the bishops elect Of Wisconsin and Ulinots; but, after discussion, it ‘was postponed until Wednesday noon, to give op- Portunity to the Chicago protests to come on and deputies who have been absent to appear. THE HOUSS OF BISHOPS pent in several messages non concurring in a joint eommittee on the hymnal; agreeing to a division of the dioceses of Michigan and Onlo; changing the titles of canons vill, ix., utle 1, and canon xii, title 1 Mr. Pierce, of Michigan, offered a He nad walked in great dark- | resolution touching the division of his diocese, | which was referred to the Committee on Canons, Dr. Vinton, of Massachusetts, presented a peti- tion of 501 clergymen, asking for a modification of the baptismal service on the regeneration doc- trie. Relerred to the Committee on Canons. The Rey. Dr. Cady, of Poughkeepsie, presented a yesoiution which recited that the law of the Chureh is threefold, and is contained in the con- stitution, the prayer book and the canons of the Church, and that any canon of ritual prescribing what may or may not be done in the performance of public worship would constitute a part of the law governing the pubdiic worship of the Church, and would necessarily be in effect an alteration or addition to the Church’s ritual law contained in the Book of Common Prayer; and 20 such alteration or addition can be made except in the manner prescrited. He therefore resvived that ihe Com- mittee on Canops be instructed to consider and report whether any canon prescribing what may or may not be done 1m the performance of public worship can be enacted by this Convention with- out violating the spirit, at least, of the constitu- tion, article vil., Which provides taat ‘no aitera- tion or addition shatl be made im the Book of Common Prayer or other offices of the Chureh or the articles of religion, unless the same shall be pro- posed in one convention and by a resoive thereof mage Known to the convention of every diocese and adopted at a subsequent general convention.”’ ‘Tne Chair announced the joint committee of the House of Cierical and Lay Deputies to nomi- nate & Board o/ Missions as follows:—The Kev. Dra. Bargess, of Massachusetts; Scarporough, of Pitsburg; Locke, of [iltnors, and Messrs. Wiliam Weish, of Philadelphia; William Cornwall, of Lou- sie Ky., and George C., McWhorter, of Oswego, WAKING UP THE AMERICAN EAGLE. Motions and resolutions betng then in order, the Rev. Dr. Sche of Brooklyn, ublotention- aily stirred up ad ssion which kept the Con- vention tively for an hour or more, until the re- cess. He offered a preambie and resolution, reciting that in the addresses of the Bishop of Lichfeid, the Metropolitan of Canada and the Bishop of Quebec, reference was made to the proposed second Pan-Angli- can Conference at Lambeth, and asking that this Convention take some action toward representation therein. The Doctor thereture moved, with the concurrence of the House of Bishops, & resolution of approbation of the pro- posed Conerence and asking the bishops to select & committee of their members to attend it, The venerable Dr. Mead, of Connecticut, who said be was full of tuls subject, earnestly opposed the passage of such resolution. The last Conier- ence at Lambeth was nothing more than a social tea party. He contended that tue last Conference ‘was an indorsement of Socinianism which he be- Heved this Church was not prepared for. It is proposed that the English speaking Church shait pecome One grand province, with the Archbisnop of Canterbury a8 Metropolitan. Are we, he askeu. to put this tree Churcu into the hands of such men’ No, emphatically po. And you can’t, he said, do anything that will injure the Courch more than tums, Some of our people now cail the Church oi England the “Mother Church.’ The Doctor said he considered her nothimg more tuan a step- moteer, and a poor One at that. If we are to ac- knowledge any mother it must be the Churcn of Seotiand, He therefore hoped this resolution Would not pass. The Rev. pr. Schenck could not contain his amazement at the arguments of bis clerical brother from Connecticut. He did not think the Tesovution Would elicit any discussion, and he thought 1¢ was only reasonable and courteous to their visiting brethren fo pass such a resolation. Dr. Norton, of Virgiuta, thought tt would be un- dignified and altogeiher out of piace for this Church to accept an invitation to a mere social entertain- ment. A MISCHIEVOUS PROPOSITION. Dr. A. H. Vinton, 01 Boston, said that no propo- sition could be made to tuis House so entirely gratuitous and so full of mischief as this. It asks us to Say to the House of Bistops that we would like them to go to England, which we have no ay. Any obe who heard the address of the Bishop of Lichfield must have known tbat what is desired 1s to bring all the English speax- ing Charch into one grand province, of which the Archbishop of Canterbury shail be the nominal head. And Bishop Selwyn said that he came here to promove organic union with the Churcn of Eng- land, Are We ready (of such 4n action as this? Must we import an ecclesiastical sovereignty trom ebroad * That Synod willwant to be heard here and heard with authority. How can we recom- mend our Churci: to strangers and outsiders when we snall be under fore rn ican heart here will say that sucu a thing would be !atai to our progress here. Ouly two dioceses were in favor of tabling it. ‘The question being again belore the House Dr. Fuitou, of Alavama, a man of fine personal presence and gifled wiih excellent e10- cutionary powers, eloquently iavored the amend- ment. After Dr. Meigs, oi New Jersey, and Dr. Paret, of Central Pennsylvama, had spoken, Dr. Rogers, of Texas, presented a sudstitule—go If they like— but they mast Mot commit this Vonvention or Chured to anything whatever, aud granting Eng- lish clergy the privileges of tis House. A delegate offered an amepameat, which declared that tna House reciprocated the friendly interchange of greetings and the community of spirit of the Engush and Canadian visitors, and extending to tuem the privileges of the House; and also declaring that tie bishops may goto Lambeth if they like whenever they shall have received an invitation theceto. Dr. Sullivan, o/ [innois, advocated this sapsutate, Which Dr, Schenck said was substantially like bis, and, the vote being taken, was adopted by 508 to 95, Some notices were gi¥en, alter wicu the Convention adjourned tili ten A, M. to-day. Then ana Now—The General Conven- tion, To Tux Eprror OF THE HERALD: Many things come to us by association, and when the House of Clerical and Lay Deputies of the General Convention of the Protestant Epis- copal Church, now sitting in St. Joun’s chapel in this city, appointed @ standing committee to report on deceased members, it occurred to me that if they bad to look back one-third of a cen- tury, to the Convention of 1841, they would report @ list of the dead which it would take no little time to read, By association I went back to the journal of that Convention, curious enough to compare the then and now, to see what havoc deatn had made. I Jound that there were but seven clerical delegates in tus Convention taat were Members of tus body im that year, and of ail the lay delegates but one solitary man remained, and Mis praise is 1 ali the churches. I allude to Mr, Charles C. Troworidge, trom the diocese of Michigan, ‘The names of the clergymen wao are members Of this House to-day and were members of the Gen- eral Conveution in 184i, are the Rey. Thus the brethren, clerical and lay, wnose volees Were once heard in tue councils ‘of the Church, have, by hundreds, been swept from the fleld of usefulness and duty to wait upon the King of Kifgs and the Lord of Lords.
