MWKEON IN “WAR PAINT.” Waterbury After More Sealps— lis “Powwow” with the Late “Boss.” It is an age of “statements.” The public—at | Jeaet a large number of citizens of New York— await, with some anxtety, the document which wili contain the statement of John Kelly in re- sponse to the Charges made against him by Mayor Mavemeyer. Those charges were published in the HERALD of Friday last, No counter statement has yet seen the light of day. Jecture, suspicion and argument. KELLY’S OFFICK, ‘The usual congregation of embryo statesmen and ‘Ward pollticians were found in and around John Kelly's ofice at No. 117 Nassau street yesterday. There is an outside room in this offlve in which are piled up a large number of books belonging to Mr. Kelly while actfIng as Sheriff of the county. ‘The vill book, the jail book, the “term tees’? book the books of process (im which are entered ail papers which come into tne Sheriffs department fer execution), the check book, the attorney’s receipt book—these With several others, were piled on shelves through- Out the office. They contained the full story, as far as documentary evidence 1s concerned, of the career of Mr. Jc hn Kelly as Sheriff of the city and county of New York. But it 1s claimed by tnose who happen to know the mill story, that documentary evidence does not carry full weight of argument tn this ight. There are outside facts and charges which, if suseained, would go far to invigorate ‘the line of attack, and Kelly's opponents say that ‘these can be placed in such “strict array” as to be “covered with affidavits” celebrated indictment Itself. Mr. Kelly was found by the HERALD representa- tive seated quietly in the small room off the main office. Awaiting bim were many of our leading pohtical lignts—among them Senator Hugh Moure, 0! af upiown district, and Assemblyman Blessing. A line of visitors stretched along both sides of the office waiting an audience with the august chiet- tain. The HERALD representative waited “his turn,” as @ tonsorial artist might say, a when that came took whe vacant chair im front of Mr, Kelly. The ctuief Was uot communicative. He was asked as to the reputed assertion of his that Nelson J. Waterbury and William M. Tweed had consulred Together on Blackwell’s Island relative to the charges against him. Mr. Kelly stated that such was the case. What He Says Abont the Mayor's State- ment—A Reckless Series of Charges Denicd~A Bid for Popularity.
