The point of largest interest ia Wall street on Baturday, during a buay season which usually sets 4n shortly after the ist of September, when the ‘crops begin their active movement to the sea | ‘Doard, is | THE MONEY MARKET. So far as to-aay’s exhibit in this connection Is oncerned there ts no change to report in current ates, which continue easy at 2 to 3 per cent for | weal, and 5 to 734 per cent for prime short and long @ate mercantile paper. The prime interest, how- ‘ever, centres in THE BANK STATEMENT, @s reflecting in the currency movement hence the ‘extent of the crop movement hither, In this re- | pect the statement this week 1s not an encourag- | Qng one, unless upon the assumption that in the | ‘dearth of activity in other directions giving em- ployment to money as in former years, that this year the dMerent grain centres West find them- selves suMcieatly in funds to postpone their usual raits upon the Eastern banks, This may ac Jor the apsence of any present drain upon our city Danks, and the slight loss of surplus reserve suf Jered during the week. NOTICE TO BUNDHOLDBRS, Directors of the Union Pacific Railroad Company fechmuch graudeation in announcing to the, boudheld- ere the great success and approaching close, of the ‘und ing operations of the company. On the 2d Inst. the Di- | rectors extended the time for exchanging Income Bods for -inking Fund Bonds until the 16th inat,, and since then one and 4 halt millions Income Bonds’ have been ex- changed, leaving only about one million of the incomes bow outstanding out of the original issue of ten Thus, during the very short period which has elapsed since the funding operations were commenced, about nine million dollars of (he Income Bonds have been con- verted into the new sinking Fund Bonds, and when it is taken into consideration that in this period was em- braced the dullest month of the summer, the Directors, many of whom have been identified with the enterprise | sincé its very inception, naturally fee: great satistuction At the succeas which has attended their eflorts for the | suture welture of the company, the rapidity of the con- versions being unprecedented in railway finance, ‘The excharges within the past two weeks have con- vincea the Directiors that a much larger amount of 1n- come bonds than they had sapposed are held iu Europe, Tmauy of the recent exchanges having been for Ku: ropean account ‘The company have notifications of bonds on the way from Europe for exchange which Were not shipped in time to reach here by the Lith inst, and numerous cable telegrams have been received DY New York correspondents of European bondholders asking if the company, would coutinue their terms of exchange—six ct the Sinking Fund bons for five of the Income bonds—until their bonds could reach New York. | At tue request of the New York representatives of Ea: | ropean bondholders, the Directors, after mature del | eration, have decide’ to extend the tae for exchanges No doubt both the remaining and European bondholders will avail themselves of this opportunity to exchange their bonds, when the Direc- tors hope fo be able to announce the fing: and complete ccess of the tunding operations of the company. The Directors take this opportunity to congratulate those holders of the Income Bonds who have exchanged | value of the new Sinking Pund Bonds, which have ad- | vanced over nine points since the 2d inst. These bonds | are consta: growing in favor with investors, and it | would seem should eventuaily take a higher rank on the | Stock Exchange than the Income Bonds have done, | owing to the valuable security behind them. ‘The Simking Fund Bonds are a mortgage upon the | Toad. equipment and franchises of the Union acide Railroad Company alter the First Mortgage Bonds ant | the government lien, whioh alone is sufficient security | to xive the bonds a Iligh standing and insure the prompt payment ot interest and principal: but in addition they. are ws second mnarigage upon the Immense land grant, of the company. The Land Grant Bonds, which form & first lien upon the lands, have been reduced from $10,400,000 to nearly $8,000,000, and the Land Department has in notes and casi about $2,700.00, which, atthe pres ent market price, would retire $3,0%,000 inore of the bonds, reducing the total to $5,000,000, ‘The Land De- | partment hus bought and cancelled nearly $690,000 Land | Grant Bonds since January 1, which isa veay rapid _re- duction in the bonded debt. It will be seen, therefore, that the time is not very distant when the sigking Fun Bonds will become a first lien upon the lands of the company, an empire in itself. ‘he company, up to 035, x August ‘1, 1874, had disposed of acres for $4,719,307, an averase of $4.55 per acre, and still had on | hand 11,044,215 acres. As illustrating the prospectiue value of the Union Pany can be cited. ' In 1550 Congress granted to the State of Illinois x sections ot land per mile of road in aid of Dunieith. ‘This grant was transterred by the state to whe Tuinois Central Company. The extent of the Land Grant | was 2,595.00 acres, of which 2,600,000 acres were set aaart for construction, 25,01) acres to pay interest on bonds Dany the sales ot lands, including advance interest, had Tealized $24,994,706, and the average per acre had "been $7 94 for Interest lands, $10 36 tor construction lands. and $1 % for tree lands The Land Grant of the Ifinois Central Company consisted of agricultural lands only, | while the lands of the Union Pacttic Kailroad are not only agricultural, but also contain rich and apparently | inexhaustible deposits ot coal and iron ore. The Cnion | Pacife Land Grant is nearly five times greater than that of the Tilinois Central, and yet the latter has reailzed | nearly $25,000,000 from its lanas, with $25,0.0 acres still on hand. ‘Some idea ot the prospective value of the | Union Pacific Land Grant can pe derived trom these | figures. The coal lands of the Union Pacific, when de- | veloped, will suppiy the Western country and the Pacide coast with coal, the moving of which will give the com- pany 4 large and valuable trafic. The Directors, im making this communication to the holders of the company’s ‘securities, ‘eel bound to ex- t there Is a great future betore their enterprise. ‘The trafic returns are very encourag ing, the net earnings tor July having shown an increase of $40,000, notwithstanaing the general depression of business. ‘The company has effected a new arrange- ment in regard to tts coal supply, whereby fuel is ob- tained at a much lower cost than’ formerly. Tho extra expenses for ffiling up trestle work, which have been charged to operating exbenses, are about over, and in over ways the expenses of the road will be’ reduced from this time forward. | _ ‘These facts. together with the rapid growth ot the Pa- cific commerce and the prospect that the Union Pacific | will for many years constitute the sole connecting link between the Atlantic and the Pacific, should improve the value of the property and the credit of the company in the future, and to this end the best efforts of the man- agement will be directed. One of the greatest and most successful affairs in the annals of publication was the fall book trade sale which Closed last evening, alter a dura- tion of nine days, at the trade salesrooms, in Clinton Hall. Whether the action of the pubiisn- ers a& Putin-Bay, Ohio, last July, where 1t Was proposed to abolish trade sales, or that re- | newed contidence in a wholesome revival of trade | has taken possession of the book dealers, one thing 1s certain, which is that the sale just closed has never before been equalled, much less sur- passed, either in contribution, sales or prices ob- tained. Before one book was disposed of the tm- mense stock of stationery, carried by Messrs. D. Appleton & Co., was offered as a prelude to the Stocks Of publications.
