Mark Twain was the presiding genius at the reopening of this house last night. The house has | had an uniortunate career, and it needed the genius of such a well known public favorite to give it lite once more, The nevel or written sketch of “The Gilded Age” is of decided popu- larity and calls for no comment here its adaptability for dramatic pur- poses, The latter quality was weil tested last night, There is a decided tinge of the Laura Fair tragedy in it, and the pistol episode takes place on the stage. The Laura of the play, excellently well unpersonated by Miss Gertrude Kellogg, who shows dramatic power of no Mean kind, is a character calculated to win | fully avoided ll undue sensational effects and the shooting of Colonel Selby (Mr. Levick) came in as @ natural portion of the play.
