FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL An Active Stock Market, with a Disposition. GOLD 1009 8-4. Mioney Easy—Foreign Exchange Steady. INVESTMENT SEOURITIES QUIET. WALL STREET, FRIDAY, Sept. 11—6 P, M. ‘The general situation at the opening to-day in- ‘dicated ® quiet market. Later prices advanced 340 % per cent throughout the entire list, the principal activity having been in Union Pacific, ‘Weatern Union, Rock Island, New York Central, Lake Shore, Pacific Mail and Wabash. The market continued firm up to the close of the call, when there was a bear raid, which produced a slight | reaction. Later the influence of the crop | oH movement had its effect, and this ts sharply told | in the following statement :— i WHBAT OPERATIONS, At the present time there is a sharp contest go- ing on between the wheat speculators of Chicago and the grangers of the Northwestern States, The Chicago speculators have sold wheat short for September to the extent of tully six weeks? large receipts. In retaliation the grangers are using their whole influence to prevent the move- ment of wheat to the lake ports, so as to prevent the Chicago speculators from covering their short ‘contracts except at a stiarp advance in prices, Some of these speculators sold wheat tor Septem- Der delivery as low as 89 cents, and it has since advanced to 95 cents. This contest may’ cause @ temporary ialling off in the receipts of a few Western roads, but it is likely to re- sult {n a rise in wheat and future benefit to the | Tailroads. it is only a short time from now to the | close of navigation, and this holding back of wheat will cause a great rush of traffic to the roads and | i throw upon them the business of moving the bulk ofthe crops. The benefit o/ this to the railroads can hardly be estimated, and, what may appear Strange, the grangers are reully helping the ratl- roads, which they have been fighting for some | time past. Private advices from Europe report | the crops there smaller than heretofore estimated, and also that we are likely to have a large export demand for our aurplus cereals. The decline in exchange to-day was based on the prospects of a large supply of commercial bills in the futare. GouD vibrated between 10914 a 109%, opening at the higher figure and going of later. Fromito 11% Per cent was paid to have gold carried. Borrow- ing flat. The customs receipts were $499,000, The Assistant Treasurer paid out to-day $50,000 on in- terest account and $33,000 in redemption of five- twenty bonds. FOREIGN EXCHANGE. The market for foreign exchange shows natural Weakness consequent on anticipated extensive cotton and grain shipments. Prime sterling pDominally 4.84 a 4.8634; selling rates 4.83 @ 4.833 and 4.85% a 4.86. Commercial bilis, 481% @ 4.82, Continental quiet and dull. Reichmarks, 94% a 955;. Cables, 96%. Prime Paria weak at 5.17% a 5.15. The steamship Morro Cas- tle, which arrived from Havana yesterday, brought $300,000 in gold coin, making the total receipts of Gold coin for the week at this port from Havana $325,000. THR FOREIGN MARKETS show no further encouragement. Breadstuffs are | 30 firmer abroad, as are also American securities, without any disposition to seek an advance.
