et tt tent { The Britt Ship Challenger on the Australasian sen mtific Discovery Ex- pedition—What Was Voumd in the ‘Waters to New Zenland SYDNEY, August 4, 1874, ‘The work of the discovery ship Challenger bas more interest than that of the Little Pedling. tonians who rule Yew South Wales, By last mail you had the news of the departure of the Chal- | lenger on the Austral-New Zealand sounding ex- | pedition, This has been accomplisned success- fully, and] am indebted to one of her scientists for the following précis of what she did and op- tained en route to Welllogton :— FINS£ RESULTS FRUM THE OCEAN BED, Leaving Sydney at nine A. M. on the 12th of | June, the first soundings (at eleven A. M.) gave 25 fathoms, deepening to 125, 250, 650 and 1,000 fathoms, up to six P. BI. Then stopped work, returning next morning to find 1,350 fathoms pe- tween the two last soundin,ys of the previous day. ‘The vessel then stood in shore on a dredging ex- | pedirion, in 410 fathoms, where several novel Geep-tea denizens were ob\wined, Of these the | must remarkable were & fexiLie urchin, over thre teet in circumference, bellevéd to be a new spe | | | ties of On isopod, allied to the Ant | arctio species, and a living specimen of the poroct- } darts, identical with a fossil geuns. A heavy gale @tepped the dredging and the vo; to Welling: | Qou Was resumed, Sapa | On the léth ) BOTTOM WAS FOUXD | im 2,000 fathoms; then three diys’ hard gales. | Wp longitude 156 deg. 28 min. ea%s bottomed at | 4,600 lathoms. From there two longitude 169 deg. | 20 min. the depth gradually ssened, tne | bottom soit and iavoravie for @ cable route, | When In the position just mentioned! the water | was found to shoal rapidly to 150 fathoms ou roc! immediately inside this it was found to sharply, aud 400 jathoms were obtained sixty | miles nearer New Zeuland. Rocks coativued the Temainder of the passage, with a vety gradual | ascent to Cape Farewell. Alter @ short stay at Wellington the Challenger | roceeded tv Auckland, and irom thence toward japan, NEW CALEDONIA. Wrench Convict Discipline—What Roche: fort’s Escape Has Brought to the Uns fortunates=Fatal Duel Between Otl- cers. Srpney, N.S. W., August 4, 1874. From New Caledouia the HERALD’s latest act vices intimate continued disquiet among the Com-. | munists, consequent upon the Increased severity with which they are treated. It was rumored that the ofMficials had discovered that they meilitated a general rising with the view of seizing some of | the government steamers and escaping. This was | probably put forward as the reason why the | authorities were cancelling the tickets of leave granted to a number of the déportés. STERN FACTS AND STRICT DISCIPLINE. The true facts of the case are that independently of the cablegrams from France respecting Henri Rochelort’s escape a letter written to that ex-rea- | ident has led to mischief. The writer, M. Rastoul, | bad been permitted to reside at Noumea and trom | there wrote to Rochefort at Sydney, When his | letter arrived he had left for California and, un- | fortunately being unciaimed, it was returned to | New Caledonia where it was seized by the author- ities, Whatever its contents may have been, they appear to nave also implicated M. Armond and Bonis, and the three unfortunate d¢portés were ; atonce arrested, placed on board a guaboat and | relegated to their companions in mtsery at the is- laud of Pines. Adinival Rivout having made a searching inquiry into the internal arraagements | of prison iite in the colony, M. de ta Richerie’s gov- ernorship 1s said to be in jeopardy and a complete alteration in the administration imminent. j QUARRELS AMONG THY FRENCH OFFICERS H have been very frequent of late and duels fashion- Bole, One of these resulted in the death of a | sous-lieutenant over whose grave the Governor made a speech in deience of the code of honor. PRISON UNFORTUNATES FROM EUROPE, The French transport L’Orne arrived at Noumea on the 16th ult., bringing $00 prisoners, among Whom are about 500 Communist deportes, the last | they hadin France. ‘their arrival has been most Inopportune, as there is no room for them at the Pines or at the Peninsula, without overcrowding. Rumor says that the former place is to be abandoned | snd the whole of the déportés removed to a larger island away from the track of trading vessels— away {rom every source of escape. Rochetort | told me he would never rest until he had every exile away from New Caledonia. If ne accom. | plishes what now seems surrounded with insu- perable difficulties, it will only be by means of a neral amnesty. Tae day of ordinary escapes as passed away. Ribout visited the island of Maré recently, and it is surmised that it was with a view to report apon its adaptability as a penal station. This is by no means improbabie, | DANCING ACADEMIES. J.
