FINANCIAL, AND COMMERCL - An Upward Turn in Stocks, | Erie Leading. GOLD 109 3-4 A 109 7-8. | Foreign Exchange Steady, Money Unchanged, | Misceltancons Securities Quict. WaLi STREET, } MoNDAY, August 31—6 P. M. Tt must have been a source of pecuitar irritation Ww the Ursa Major of the street to see Erie, the stock tha: he nad calculated he had buried out of Might, leading @ sharp advance this morning. Especially, must this have been so whew the stock continued to advance, and succeeding telegrams trom Londen showed an upward movemeut there 1 which the activity on this side was only a mild Fefieotion. It was a bad day for the bear party, ‘end, realizing the situation, they piped but lowly, @nd that in very doubtful strains. The market pened with CONSIDERABLE ANIMATION, ‘Wabash in the first dealings exhiditing a decline @i % and Lake Shore \ percent. Erie, however, quickly advanced 15; per cent, carrytng with it the Walance of the list to the extent o! +y a \ percent, Up to the close of the first call, stimulated by Erie, ‘which kept improving, the general list showed an @avance of 44 a1 per cent, subsequently to which @reacuon of % @ % percent took piace. At the @econd call the market was steady. Quicksilver advanced from 30 to 30% and preferred from 333¢ | to 3343, but why only the immediate operators in the stock know. Tne movement iv Erie was the sustaining influence in the market to-day, and ‘was 4 surprise to the bears to such an extent that at first they did not know how to deal with it. To Mind Erie aggressive on ihe bull side was a revela- tion to the tollowers of the great bear, and it may ‘be safely said that considerable of the advance ‘was due to the fact that the opposing party did not Know at first now to deal with the situation. THE ADVANCE IN ERIE ‘was based upon the closing out of aloan recently asked for, Which some months ago, under the old Management, was only partially subscribed for, ut which, under the reputation the new man- agement has acquired, was promptly taken up ‘when reoffered, which promises to enable the road to pay off its Moating debt and so enter the com- petitive fleld on acash basis. There can be no doubt that the repntation of the new management has wreatly hélped to this result, and largely the confidence felt in the udministrative as weil as the executive ability of the present President. During the closing hour of business the market ‘was irregular, with dealings on a restricted scale. Erie advanced to 34%, the highest point of the @ay, with New York Central, Union Pacific and Northwest firm. Per contra, Wabash went off | from 34% to 33%/, and C., C. and J. O, from 117% to 11%. Quicksilver, common, deciined to 30, but wales of the preferred were made at 34. The favor- Ste of the list to-day was Erie, after wich came Lake Shore, Western Union, Wabash and Union Pacific. Meeting at the cy SE Cotton Ex- change—Discussion on the Classifica- tion of American Grades— List of | Delegates. In June last there was held in Augusta, Ga., @ National Convention of prominent merchants, ,growers and others in the cotton interest, at which It was resolved tuat there should be a class. Mfication of cotton of all the grades, so that an American standard might be established by which all the cotton exchanges in the country could be governed after October 1, 1874. In pursuance of this action all the delegates met yesterday morn- | ing at haif-past ten o’clock at the New York | Cotton Exchange in order to carry out the work of the Augusta Convention, whose resolutions pro- vided that the meeting should convene on or about the 31st of August. The names o1 the delegates are as follows:—J. T. Dosweil, of New Orieans, La.; J.B. Gilbert, of Nashville, Tenn,; Wiiam Henry Woods, Savan- Dab, R wie, Baitimore, Mi 3_B. smith, Boston, ‘Mass, M, Gates, Lae Tenn. ; 8. Lester ‘fayicr, Cincinnati, Onio; J. B. Rita Eufaula, Ga.; J. BK. Cohen, 81. see Mo.; A. K. Childs, ‘Athens, Ga. Alternates—E. G Matthews. Baltimore, Md.; Thomas Fenner and 8. R. Chesorough, New York. The Committee of Reception of the Cotton Ex- change of this city comprised the following named gentiemen:—B. P, Baker, Chairman; J. FP. Wen- man, Joun B. Kitcaing, Robert Murdoch, M. Leh- man, Thomas Fenner, and Henry Hentz, President of the Exchange, as ex oficio member. The Convention was organized in the man room by the election of Mr. J. T. Doswell, of Orleans, President, and Mr. 8S. Lester Tayior (Presi- dent of the Cincinnati Cotton Exchange) as Sec- retary. The members held only a session of one hour and a hall, the practical business of the Con- vention being discussed in rather an informal manner, the members exchanging views as to the best manner of classifying cotton, so that the type samples shouid be ihe same throughout the thon: all by Bere that a lack of an American jtandard had veen the cause of great confusion and _interminabie gisputes In the — trade. It was decided = at length that the Convention should commence the practi- cal work entrusted to it to-day (Tuesday), at half-past ten o’clock in the forenoon, by meet- ing at the place of business of Mr. Charlies A. Easton, No. 141 Pearl street, where the top floor will be ‘devoted to the examination of all grades of American cotton with a wew to a general classifi- cat ‘The Convention only expect to be in session for about two days longer, and it is to be hoped their examinations and deliberations will resuit in set- thing the much needed standard, thus relieving the dealers of one of their greatest embarrass- ments, The Selegates seem to be practical busi- ness men of @ high order of intelligence, and, if Gompartesns ‘were not odious, it might be ‘re- marked that their business-like manner of going to work without frothy speeches was in admirable contrast to the long-winded preambles, &c., of men who meet in convention to make laws for the State or mould the government of this great na- ton.
