Foreign Exchange Heavy—Money Easy— Governments Steady—Railway Mortgages Kirm. LL STREET, WEDNESDay, Pre 26,—6 P. 'w.} ‘The depressing effect in the stock market of Fealizations yesterday was further helped by short males to-day, and the weakening influence of a Feported failure in the petroleum trade with liabil- Mes amounting to $500,000, The firm involved 1s that of Sonneborne & Co., formerly in the clotning ‘rade, from which, it is said, they retired with $1,000,000 surplus, whereupon tney entered into the petroleum trade, investing $800,000. Their woases are roughly stated at $300,000, although they may be greater, their assets, yet unestimated, consisting largely of real estate, for which Shere 1s at present no market, The general char- acter of DEALINGS ON THE STOCK BXCHANGR Feflected dulness and in stocks a decidedly weak feeling, as though operators were inclined to wait durther developments before entering the specu- lative arena, thus leaving present holders with- out any inducement to remain im, Hence a eell- ing Movement, The opening quotations were to % per cent lower tnan the closing prices of yes- terday, from: which a further decline of } to % per cent later took place. Erie went off {rom 32 to 814 im sympathy with a decline in London. The prin- cipal dealings were in Western Union, Rock Island, Pacific Mail, Wabash, Lake Shore and St. Paul common. In the afternoon the market was still weak, and a further decline of % to % per cent was registered. During tne last hour of bus- iness the same heavy feeling prevailed, and at the ciose the prices were the lowest of the day, al though the furthest decline was only % per cent, while the other extreme was per cent. This, however, added to yesterday’s decline and that of the day previous, shows a very beansh tendency forthe week. These kaleidoscopic changes in the current speculation are, however, thoroughly german to Wail street and prove nothing but the temper of the average operator. The total sales of the day reached an aggregate of 104,349 shares, Western Union leading, Pacific Mail, Lake Shore and Erie being the next iavorites. Most of these Italian boys are not unlike Guiseppe, @ dif_i- @ence always being noticeable in them when among juvenile Americans, owing, no doubt, to their imperfect knowledge of English and to their feebleness of body om account of poverty. Guiseppe was even more timid and retiring than most other Italian boys, and to this was added on Sunday an attack of diarrhoea, which sickness was vistble in the pallor of the boy’s face all that day. On Monday morning, shortly aiter rising, he was attacked with the disease suddenly, and the teacher, Charles Bernhard, ordered bim to the bathroom, but when the kind-hearted master bad got the boy stripped he used the rattan freely on his hips and legs, causing the skin to become BLACK AND BLUB. The little fellow having been washed, he went ‘With all the other boys to the reiectory for break- jast; but before the meal was over the disease again attacked him, and after breakfast he was again ordered to the bathroom, whither the teacher Bernhard followed him, again using the Tattan over the sick boy’a bocy. Guiseppe cried, of course, as any boy would, and having got some fresh c:othes on, endeavored to linger out the day, being, however, ALMOST UNCONSCIOUS Of what was paasing. His face now had become of @ biuish color, aiso his feet, andgthe feebleness of his body was evident in every movement he made, Even the considerate teacher Bernhard at lust condescended tu be just and to admit tnat tue boy was suffering terribly, though the child was alraid to make any signs of nis distress om account of his mo! g’8 experience. Bernhard ordered another boy, named Henry Smith, a sympathetic orphan, to belp Guiseppe up stairs to bed. smith, Who 18 Ot More than about eleven years old, took Guiseppe in his arms and carried him to the Hos- Pital, Where the matron was instructed to look alter nim. Guiseppe never uttered a word to bis companion, Smith, while ascending the stairs, Dor did he speak when placed on the bed. Once only alter tunis did he speak, and that was wheo ne heard his mother’s voice beside the bed (sne baving been sent for by the considerate Bernhard), and then, without opening his eyes, he said, “13 THAT MY MAMMA?! The mother took her culid home later im the even- and be died during the night. ‘ne doctor whom the parenis had summoned to attend the child notified Coroner Croker on Tues- day morning of the death and tae circumstances attending it. Coroner Croker yesterday proceeded to investigate the case, and ior this purpose gulsuly es entered the House of Industry in the Five ints, fearing that there was danger that the boys who were witnesses oi the cruelty Poon Gulsep| e inight, before giving their testimony, be intimidated by the teacners. On entering the Schooircom, without any preparatory notice, the Coroner announced himself to the teacher im charge, and said be desired to see SOME OF THE BOYS WHO HAD SEEN THE BEATING in the bathroom, “Boys,” said the Coroner, “which of you saw the teacher beat little Dueser?”’ About a dozen boys immediately rose and the Cor- oner selected three of the most intelligent look- also committed Henry Smith as being the prin- cipal witness, but subsequently set the boy at liv- erty, as it would be necessary to lock him up io a cell until such time as bis evidence was wanted, and this, of course, would be @ punishment alto: gether undeserved. BERNHARD COMMITTED, At the Sixth precinct station house the Coroner had Bernhard taken before him ior iorma) exam- ination, Bervhare stated that be was corn in Massachusetts, was twenty-eight 1 age and had been a sallor b occupation, This rather novel combination of sailor and teacher might be con- sidered in part explanatory of the chastisement to which the boy Dueser was treated, THR POST-MORTEM EXAMINATION Tevealed that the heart was embedded in blood. Bernhard has not denied that he beat Guiseppe, and probably does not imagine that he did auy- toiug very cruel, The boy, no doubt, suffered most, in his delicate state of heaith, from the soc he received by the repeated castigation. Berunard really scared the lie outofhim. The Jace of Bernhard, with the salloc gait and straddle of his legs, does not bespeak for him much Dicey of feeling or ofaction. He could uever begin to now how to understand the thoughts of b sick pauper enild. The griet of Guiseppe’s parents is tense and sometimes ‘very demonstrative. ANOTHER OIL FIRE ON THE ERIE, One of the oil cars standing on the long switch at Penhorn Creek, onthe Erle Railway, caught fire at a quarter past two o'clock yesterday after- noon from the sparks ofa locomotive, Before the Jersey City Fire Department could get to work seven cars Were in flames. Fortunately the cars were empty, but on.either end were about 100 | cars, many of them laden with barrels of re- fined oll, They were taken away by a locomotive. Had the flames extended to the oll tanks the fire would have equalled in intensity ine terrible con- flagration at Weehawken. Each of the loaded cars coutained fifty barrels of refined oil, yet | through prom < action and good judgment they | were removed beyond the reacn of the fire. Tn? main line of the Erie betag thus blocked up, trains were detained about three hours. SORANTON OOAL SALE. The regular monthly auction sale of Scranton coal was held yesterday.
