FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL [== os on, Stocks Down | count in the open market the Street. mee Ohio and Mississippi Used to Lead the Attack. WHAT IT IS WORTH. Foreign Exchange Firm—Money Easy— Governments and Railway Mort- sages Steady, Ww. Tunspay, August lied PM. } ‘The Bank of England gained £197,000 sterling on "balance to-day, the London market for consols ‘and American securities being without especial change. This is put forward agin some sort cor- ‘roborating the general opinion picked up on Wall street during the last few aays that the eminent ‘Premier of Engiand has earned his Punch dimin- ‘ative, and that eyer since he wrote “Lothair’ ho ‘Bas been—not to put too fine a point upon it— “weak” upon the subject of @ pending great re- Ugious struggle. ‘The question is still an open ‘one, however, and how it is now regarded on the -other side may be better determined by the action -of the Bank of England at its next meeting. Goup ‘opened at 1093, advancea to 109% and closed at 100%. The carrying rates were % tol percent, borrowing flat, The Sub-Treasurer paid out to- ay $16,000 on account of redemption of five ‘twenty bonds, and $88,000 on account of interest. ‘The customs receipts were $888,000. PORRIGN BXCHANGB ‘was quiet and steady on the basis of 4.87%, for prime bankers’ sixty days sterling, and 4.91 for short sight, nominal rates, with sales at 4.87 and 4.90) respectively. The Inter- mai Revenue receipts to-day were $180,000, Secretary Bristow returns to Washington to-night. STOCKS ‘were weak, with s general decline in prices in the early dealings, which showed a decline of % to 2% percent. Ohio and Mississippi led the downward ‘movement, going off from 2 to 21% per cent upon iarge gales. The principal dealings after this stock were in Union Pacific, Western Union, Pacific Mail, Wabash and Lake Shore. The explanation of the break in Ubjos is thus given in an evening paper :—‘The decline in Ohios was caused by un- Tavoraple rumors, one being to the effect that the company would default in its next interest pay- ments, and another that the concern borrowed the money to pay the last interest. The next in- terest, we believe, is not due until October. We do not attach much importance to these rumors as being the cause of the decline. Ohios are Probably drifting into the same rut as @., OG. and I. C. and other kindred shares.” In- quiry respecting the announced default on interest payment failed to reach @ source of positive inior- ™mation. Poor's Manual, however gives the follow- ing information respecting the road and its Wnancial condition that may help to an under- standing of the value of the stock. The main line is 395 miles, with 39 miles of branches:. ‘The capital stock is........ The cost of road equipment, ke. fainst Which 18 a Funded debt.. $10,559, Floating debt... 113108 — 11,278,843 ‘Which leaves an actual stock interest of. $24,030,000 The debt of the road, with interest maturing in October, upon which the payment of the same is questioned, is as follows:— Income mortgage W. D. $174,000 Second consolidated mortgage. 3,203,000 Total.. + $8,377,000 The investor and dealer in the stock can draw -his own conclusions from these figures, -Alternoon stocks were firmer, anda Ohio and Missiesippi recovered to 22%. During the last hour of business there was a partial re- covery in prices, Ohios rallying % per cent, sell- ing up to 23. The advance in other shares ranged from \% to % per cent, the principal business after Obio baving been in Union Pacific, Wabash, Lake Shore, Northwest, St. Paul common and Western Union, Farther news was received to-day re- specting the progress of the argument at Madison, |* Wis., in the Granger case, but nothing of a definite Character was learned. The street would seem to have elimtnated this question in its present aspect from current speculation. The subjoined table -gives the sales of each stock, as also THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES.
