Mr. Tilton left the whole matter wo Judge Morse, to act as Mrs, Tiiton’s coansel, Mr. Tilton declines (o employ ap attorney of his @wn, saying that nis wife shall possess the house and all its contents, that the cnildren may reside with her in some sembiance of the old home. At the preliminary inquiry held some time ago | tn the case of William McCormick, a butcher, late | of No, 309 Kast Fitty-first street, supposed to have died from hydrophobia caused by the bite of a dog asew weeks previous, the Coroner, considering it to the advantage of science and sanitary purposes, thought fit to postpone the examination and em- a jury of ten of the most eminent medical men in the clty. The reinves tigation wook place yesterday at the Coroner's oMce in East Houston street, commencing at two o'clock and lasting until six P, M., when, after a large amount of testimony had been taken, tho Court was again postpbdned till Friday evening, in order to allow the jury to prepare their verdict and offer such opinions as the case suggested for public information and guidance. The various evidence elicited left not the least reasonable doubt that the man had been bitten by a dog some few weeks previous to the appearance of the serious symptoms immediately preceding his demise, But whether the dog that haa bitten him was rabid. or e slaily suspected 18 still alive and healthy, This suspicion rests mainly on tue word ot one Kelly, who Was present at the time McCor- mick received the seraich on bis hand. Dr. Frank Hamilton acted as foreman of the jury, consisting of Dr. Meredith Clymer, Jacobi, Crosse and others, whose names have been ai- ready turnishea. The investigation was conducted by Coroner Kessler, aided by acting Coroner Leo. Jonn McCormick, brother of the deceasea, stated that his brother never mentioned the fact of his having been bitten; the wound must bave been of the slightest sort, Michael O'Sullivan, a bartender at No, 230 East Forty-seventh sireet, testified that some tweive weeks ago McCormick and Kelly came to his saloon for some brandy to pour on a wound caused by a dog bite on the former’s hand; Kelly said the dog belonged to Mr. Mason; the Wound seemed like the scratch from a pin. The Coroner-here stated he had made great ef- forts, but up to the present without success, to get at and produce Kelly. Dr. Alexander Had- den’s evidence was a recapitulation of that given ou the previous occasion and his report read at the Neurological Society, He was fully convinced that if any such distinctive disease as nydropno- bia existed the deceasea bad certainly died irom that, Ali the symptoms were undoubtedly mani- fested. In this opinion Dr. Hadden was corrovo- rated by Drs. Leavitt and Hammond, who had also atiendéd the patient. Dr. Hammond's minute microscopical examination of — deceased's brain disclosed fatty atrophy of tne cell structures in the cortical substance, cerebel- | lum and netve roots, showing granular matter, oul, vesicles and amyloid corpuscles, circum- stances attendant on hydrophobia, but not avsent 1p other diseases. William Mason, Sr.; William | Mason, Jr., and their servant, Timothy Conklin, testified to the uniform gentieness of the dog ac- cused by Kelly as the evil doer and its periect heaith up to the present time.
