FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, ‘THE NEW DIRECTION OF ERIE. A Quiet Election and Almost! % Uncontested Choice. ‘Stocks Dull and Hleavy—Gola Barely Steady. Wav Srreet, TUESDAY, July 4—6 P, The fresh subject of interest on the street to-day ‘was the election in Erle, which resulted in the election of the following ticket, in reality that ef the English holders of the stock :—Hugh J. Jewett, ‘Thomas A. Scott, Jonn King, Jr., Jonn Taylor Joha- | Gity ston, M. A, Roberts, Frederick Schuchardt, W. Butler Duncan, E. D, Morgan, H. Baltzer, §. L. M Barlow, L. H. Myer, H. G Stebbins, R. Suydam Grant, Lucius Robinson, John a. C. Gray, Cort- landt Parker, Homer Ramsdell Subsequently the new direction organized with. Hugh J. Jewett a3 President, and elected A. R, McDonough Secre- tary and W. P. Sherman, of Duncan, Sherman & ©o., Treasurer. The result of the elec- tion had been previously discounted, hence ® decline tm the stock im the after- noon, which was also helped by the fact that a report nad been industriously circu- lated that a statement would be presented at the Meeting to-day, on the partof the English exam- iners, of a favorabie character, which report not appearing disappoinied those longof the stock and brought about sales. The source WHENCE this report emanated may be judged from the fact ‘that it helped to make a market upon which a good dealof stock was unloaded during the past few days. The suggestion made here some days ago, | to the effect that these rumors as to the tone of the report which the English examiners would make did not certainly emanate from them nor from the then existing direction, as such would | Rave been, leaving the question of good taste aside, manifest tll policy in the latter and a breach Of trust to their employers in the former, and that tne inspiration of such rumors would probably be apparent later, seems to be borne out by the present attitude of the market, tm which the | mon-appearance of this report 1s used to depre- ciate Erie shares, The decline to-day, however, Was not much, being only 1% per cent between the highest and lowest figures of the day, of ‘which % was regained before the close. Use was also attempted to be made of the possibiltsy of | some of the new men on the ticket not consenting to serve, such new men being Jewett, Scott, King, Roberts, Myer, Stebbins, Grant and Gray, but the later organization of the Board and the broad statement made after the election—that all of the gentlemen would serve—destroyed this ‘‘point,” THE STOCK MARKET GENERALLY Opened firm, with an advance of % to % per cent as compared with the closing prices of last evening, which was followed by a decline of % to 3% per cent, trom which there was a partial re- covery after the first call. market again became weak in the absence of buyers, and the languishing tone of speculation generally consequent upon the superior attrac- | oe tions of Saratoga, Long Branch and other places ofthat kind.
