NEW JERSEY. ieee Rabiedaseal (CONTINUED FROM EI EIGHTE PAGE.) struck the fagman, and the the fagm#n now brings @utt to recover damages for serious injuries sus- tained a3 ulieged through Heaney’s wilful neg- Yigence. The suit is brought against Mr, Harrison on the ground that he is responsible for the neg- ligence of bis servant. THE PRIZE SHOOTERS IN NEW JERSEY. It was not until early yeaterday morning that the Schuetzenfest In Newark really closed, hun- dreds of couples having kept possession of the grand dancing saloon until nearly sunrise. The highest prize for shooting, $100, was won by W. Hayes, who made seventy points; J. F. Rathjen won the $75 prize; Messrs. Euisole, Knecht, Quitmeyer, Scholdeman and Schuitz each a $66 rige; O. E. Pollard a $60 one; Messrs, bird, in,’ J, Morf-and E, F. Beak '$50 ones. Prizes ranging from $45 to $5 Were won also by a number of persons, NEWARK’S INDICTED OFFIOIALS. ‘Getting Restive while Waiting on the Supreme Court—‘Joe” Young Gone to Massachusetts, As will be recalled by readers of the HERALD there was jound by the January Grand Jury of Essex county, New Jersey, a small batch of indict- ments against Alderman William Stainsby and ex- ‘Commissioner Joseph C. Young as wellas the “big omnibus” instrument, which included five officials and their contractors. ‘This batch contained Spar es against Stainsby and Young, con- joint as well as separately, of having Conspired to cheat and deirand the city in the Matter of acertain real estate transaction with Rev. Jonn U, Guenther, The main charge is that Stainsby and Young both used their official know!l- edge to line their own pockets with greenbacks at the expense of the city, using a young man named Charles ‘taylor, a relative of Stainsby’s, aa the Stool pigeon in the matter, This is only one of a Series of similar transactions in- which Newark City officials, past and present, are charged with having ween parties to, After the trial of those held under the omnibus indictment, which trial resulted in a failure of the jury to agree as to the conspiracy, though all were agreed as to the fact that the city had been eeeeed swindled somewhere in the laying of the Spring- fleld avenue Telford pavement, the offici an; mounced their determination to push the other cases to a trial. One of the indictment against Statnsby was quashed in the lower court. Tue others were ARGUED IN THE SUPREME COURT at Trenton early in June. As usual, the Court took the papers and reserved decision. Since then Ro decision has been renaered. During the last week Colouel Abeel, the County Prosecutor, has repeatedly urged the Court to act in the matter, but thus far without success. To let the cases re- main in statu quo until the September term of court would, it 1s argued, work an injustice to ac- cused and accusers, as the party feeling incident to the carrying on of an exciting political cam- paign, which 1s promised in the fall, mignt be @roused so as to materi interiere with a lairad- ministration of justice. Mr, Stainsby is the leader of the republican party in Newark, and. even as it 4s, he And his iriends isist upon it that they are the victims of political animosity, JOE YOUNG'S SUMMER RETIREMRNT. For some time past rumors have been foatin; ‘around in Newark that Joe Young had disposed o} all tis property in Newark and left ior parts un- wo. It turns out that he has disposed of his property, at least partly, and has gone to Massa- chusetts, but no fears are entertained that he will not be forthcoming for trial when wanted, MR. MASON'S MISFORTUNE. A Wall Street Story. Thomas: J. Mason, of Newark, was formerly a Clerkin the firm of Merrill, Tiiney & Co., No, 11 Wallstreet, He was a youth of good address, handsome features and prepossessing manner3. In the company of the falr sex he was not alone & charmer, but was an embodiment of everything that might be estzemed as good, gracious and lovely. Having occupied a trustwortuy position in the above mentioned company he was highly esteemed, ior the reason that he exhibited an ac- tive enterprise in his business, a careful regard for work and a determination to go ahead and render himself generally useful in the important establishment to whicn he had the honor to be attached, Good looking, indus- trious and greatly trusted, as has been said, he had no reuson to apprehend misciief had he Kept quiet within himself and had he fought against the tempter, His rapid and, at drst sight, appar- ently usetul career was, unlortunately, of short duration. It appears, according to the account of the case adduced at the trial, that he was but six months in the employment of the firm of Merrill, Tilney & Co., during which time he acted in the position of cashier. This very onerous and trust. worthy position gave him thé handling of money, which lact was by no means a channel through which nis integrity and honesty would make itself apparent, ‘He was ambitious, So is every young man now- adays. He thought he might go ahead on the pees of chance, as other men did. This bees of ambition proved the great mistake of his lifetime. He didn’t succeed, but, uniortunately, came to ruin. While Gate a agacashier he thought he might operate in Wall street stock with his em- ployers’ money, and, like a man, he didso. He ‘used the money of the firm in Wall street specula- tions to the extent of $27,900, a very trifling sum, ofcourse, for an enterprising clerk making $30 a week or so to invest with. His great jault was that he hacn’t more to bestow on the fickle and grabbing Goddess Fortune. His operations in gold dou’t appear to have materially aaded either to his comfort or the esteem in which he ‘was hitherto held by his employers. A mouse jumped suddenly across the ditch. Mr. Mason’s accounts were overlooked by the bookkeeper and the trifling deficit of $27,900 was found to exist. ‘The young cashier being told of the circumstance was asked ior an explanation, when, with the utmost nonchalance, he admitted that Ne had used $8,000 in Wall street speculations, and had hoped to replace it, but was unable to do go. He was arrested on Saturday by Detective Sampson, and was yesterday brought before Justice Fiammer, when the above circumstances were sworn to. He was held to answer inthe sum of $10,000 bail. A BLACKGUARD POLICEMAN. While Mary O'Donnell and two companions were ‘walking along Chrystie street the night before last, on their way home from work, they were accosted in & free and easy impudence by Officer Herman Inter- man, of the Tenth precinct. Tne girls resente: the insult and told the policeman to be careful o his conduct. Interman, with an impudence not uncommon in the force, made a second attack oso, the young girls. Two of them fled, but Mary Donnell retained her ground and asked him wnat he wanted. He then abused her in a most Diackguard manner, calling her the vilest names, and ended by flinging her into the gutter. The girl, on getting up, went to her home weeping, Yelated to her mother what had occurred, anda complain'. is to be entered at the Central Omce against this fellow, who so shomelully graced the uniform he wore. BOY BURGLABS. Wednesday night, about eleven o'clock, OMcer John Rourke, of the Sixteenth precinct, arrested two boysjinamed Michael Cronin and John Henry, on the corner of Twenty-sixth street and Eighth avenue. When seized they had in their possession several boxes of cigars and a quantity of chewing and smoking tobacco. The cigars and tobacco ‘Were subsequently discovered to be the property of George Pheany, of No. 509 West Forty-third reet, Wi.ose store was broken open the same evening. Cronin and Henry were arraigned before quae Murray, at Jefferson Market, yesterday. Eye oitiy confessed their guilt, and were held in $1,000 bail each to answer. BEAL ESTATE, The auction business yesterday at the Exchange comprised the following Supreme Court sales:— Messrs. K. A. Lawrence & Co., under the direction or E. D, Gale, reteree, sold five lots on 114th street, east of Filth avenue; Messrs. Bleecker, Son & White sold, under the direction of Philo T. Pie Halll Jr., referee, to September 10, and J. J. Mackin, referee, ad- ata the sale of the premtses on Tenth avenue, tween 115th and 119th streets, Peebles On Wednesday, on the premises, Messrs, Bleecker, Son & Co., sold under the direcsion of G, D, Lyman, a four story building aud five acres at Highwood Park, Tenafy, N. Stocks Again Off—Gold Heavy and Dull— Money Easy and Foreign Exchange Weak. THE EXISTING SITUATION. WALL STREET, } THURSDAY, July 9—6 P, M. Outside of the immediate and direct influences the suggestions which operated here to-day wére the fear of the effect of the recent decision in re- spect to American railway securities upon foreign investors and the hint of decreased railroad earn- ings. ‘The fallacy of the former antictpation could be abundantly shown 1 space permitted the Publication of extracts from foreign newspapers showing the character of American ratlway credit abroad, Tae quality of this sort of comparison was shown in the fact that Erle was exceptionally strong to-day, notwithstanding that a direct at- tack was made upon St, Paul and Northwestern, two stocks largely dealt in abroad, upon the so- called granger success, The effect of this latter movement, one house alone selling 1,600 shares of St. Paul, on German account, was to depress the entire list, which, after showing A SINKING FEELING during the day, left off at nearly tac lowest figures. ‘The suspicion is gaining ground that there is an organized effort to depress the value of American railway securities between now and the fall, both here and in Europe, and that all agencies, as well as the circulation of all damaging news, are being availed of to bring about this result. The current business would seem to help out the soundness of this suspicion. THE STOCK MARKET opened at adecline of % to % per cent as com- pared with the closing quotations of last evening, and later went of 3 to % per cent, chiefly in Northwest and St. Panl common, Lake Shore, Rock Island, Wabash and Western Union. The latter was heavily depreciated upon statements regarding a new cable, with an independent land line connection. At the second board there was a@ steadier feeling, and prices showed a recovery of % to }4 per cent from the lowest point, Ta the later afternoon business the market showed an increased selling dispo- sition, and the closing quotations were generally the lowest of the day. Compared with the open- ing figures Northwest and St. Paul common showed a decline on the day’s business of 3% a 35% per cent; Western Union, 3% percent; Wabash, 2 per cent; Rock Island, 134 per cent, and the bal- ance of the list % to1% per cent. The aggregate day’s business amounted to 201,000 shares, dis- tributed as shown in the subjoined table. RECORD OF THE STOCK MARKET. Highest. Lowest. Sales. N. Y. Central and Hudson...
