FINANCIAL 4ND COMMERCIAL, Revived Animation in the Stock Market. BEAR TACTICS. Railroad Mortgages Firm, Southern Se- curities Dull, Money Easy and Foreign Exchange Quiet. GOLnD 111 s3-s. WALL Srexrr, } WEDNESDayY, June 24—6 P, M. The wonderful vitality which is so distinctive s feature of our national character, the recupera- tive energy that is so remarkably characteristic of our national ilfe, was never more clearly emon- strated than in the events of the past few days here. With the settlement of the vexed question regarding th» limit of the legal tender circulation, and the adjournment of Congress, it would seem as though an immense incubus had been lilted off she business of the country and that we were once again salely launched upon a fair sea of prosperity, so prompt has been the response in that barometric meusure o! fuctuating vaiues, the stock list. Although a matter of calculation with many beforehand, it came at last a8 @ surprise, and, 48 is the nature of a surprise, with AN EBB AND FLOW OF CONFIDENCE in the ultimate result. The feeling is one of gen- eral buoyancy, yet tie old timidity still lingers in the minas of many, As @ consequence of this slight causes operate on the side of the bears, who naturally look on the shady side of all things to influence values. Thus, although the market opened with an improved feeling upon that of yes- terday, advantage was quickly taken, and success- fully, of the xeport of an accident to Commodore Vanderbilt to deprecixte pric These, however, rallied again, aud aithough fuctuating and uncer- tain exhibited sumcient strength to call for further Pressure, which was given in the shape of another report that ‘he Commodore was seriously hurt. So familiar a trick, however, as the killing of the vigorous railroad king, who isasort of Wilhelm Fourth in this respect, recovers from more ill- nesses than Pio Nono and escapes a sudden demise oftener evén than that eminent financier Napoleon the Third used to, was too stale to effect much, and it was QUIETLY WHISPERED ROUND that a mistake had been made. The leading bear, Ws was said, was not in haste to cover at all, as was supposed, but on the contrary, was still selling. In corroboration o/ this the slight comparative advance in Union Pacific, a stock in which he is supposed | to be most largely interested, was pointed to, The | market was tnen tn just that uncertain mooa to be influenced by trifies, the Vanderbilt shares | showing symptoms of weakness upon the repeated reports of the Commodore's injuries, that even so questionable a presentment of the situation as this | ‘was accepted by wavering buyers, and the market left to itse!! went'ol, closing at about the lowest potnt of the day. The principal decline wasin the Vanderbilt shares—Lake Shore, Western Union and New York Central, Wabash showed the great- est decline—2 per cent, Erie was affected inde- pendently by the price on the otner side, and aftor selling at Sl}; went of to 29%, closing at % advance. THE CROP PROSPECTS. Reports from the Northwestern States— Tennessee, West Virginia and Ken- tucky. {From the Chicago Tribune of Monday.] We present this morning unusually iull reports of the crop prospects, mainly in Illinois and Iowa, reserving the other Western States for another time. By the courtesy and with the help of the officers of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, the Alton and St. Louts, the Miinois Central and the Michigan Central Railroads, we have been able to make up & more comprehensive review of the crop prospects than has yet been presented. The ie) sult of the investigation 18 very satisfactory, warrants the prediction that there will be an un- ally Jarge yieid in all grains, uniess it be in ats. The most notable increase is in coro. The farmers seem to have forgotten the tacit agree- ment which was promulgated last year—viz., to secure good prices for their corn by planti! ye Of it r not this, then they have more con! im the transportation reforms toa they had at that time, and indeed there have been events Which warrant a more hopeful outiook. It is 180 evident that many of the farmers are ne more attention to stock raising than ever which would account in part jor the increase in the amount of corn planted. In & few sections the core ta is back wi but everywhere it seems to be ‘size and color, and the crop will show @ ¢ crop is reported as erage. It would probably have exceeded the average if the apring wheat it e eooinorense. The wh as wellas the winter wheat e drought, Watch insted many many weeks in some sections, seri- ously damaged the latter, wana the chinenbug has been making ravages in nared by the b 4 broom corn 18 doing well; th far beyond any. ‘or raising flax Mn roportions - net, 4a 4 port of acre! planted in fom ‘Kable open varies trom the same amount lest year to three times that ‘uits are plen' 4 all sections, and mer seaso! Towa shor amount, in different counties, but the averai ge amount of wheat and corn planted in lowa is a bably twenty-fwe eee larger than that of year, while that of oate is ten per cent more, Tne Riess from along the line of the Illinois Cent Railroad in this te show an increase over last year of all grains sown of as much as thirty per cent. Altogether, there will be no reasot Laem we, and the harvest will bean early one. There is also evidence of @ plenty of money in the banks to platn o1 the crops in any section of Illinois move these crops when the time comes, The Crops in Tennessee. {From the Nashville Banner, 20th.) We are gratified to learn. from some of our local millers, that the wheat this season ts of unusually good quality. Last year's crop was very large and the loreign markets Lg were overstocked, and many of the buyers bi large quantitied on band. Unless rain svall come pnt coru ali over the State will be @ compara- tive failure. Tre helds, ploughed early in the Spring, aredcy aud hard and the plants have hardly yet AppP Aros above tue ground. With med- erate rains, however, beiore the scorcting heat of Juiy and August, the crop way yet be saved, The wheat Prop throughout the State seems very promising, but oats and other grain have suffered much from the drought. The outiook, altogecher, is @ very gloomy one for the for vhe facciers, Gloomy Reports from West Virginia. (From the Wheeling Intelligencer.) We are happy to notice thas the crops generally throughout the country are not suffering from drought as they are in this particular locality. Our information trom the country immediately round about leads us to apprehend that the hay crop wilt fail fully one-half short and that the oats will nos do much if any better. The potatoes aiso are sul- fering and garden vegetaoles generaily are behind. ‘The corn sull looks healthy, but is backward. Tne Wheat crop is the only crop that promises to exceed the average. In other parts ol the country the situation is dilferent, For instance, the Nationas Crop Re) of Saturday last reports that the weather in the Mississippi, Missourl and Ono valleys during the last week or two has been gen- erally very favorabie tu the growing grain, fhe average raintali has been 1 inch and 59-100, fairly distriouted over the country. In regard to the hay eet the advices indicate a decrease im the yield iilinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansis, Minnesota, Mis- pour, ‘Ohio apd Wisconsin, as compared with last ear, Of 7 4-10 per cent, equal to say 796,000 tons. ‘he coudition of the growiag bariey and rye, June 1, In these States was trom 6 6-10 to 5 4-10 per cen& below a good average. .In regard to swine the present average condition below & good average amounts to 11% per cent. Nothing 1s satd about wneat and corn, but general reports seem to favor @n extraordinary yield of the former crop anda® fair prospect ior the latter.
