WA S?PREET, Torstay, June is—6 P.M. | ‘Tee chieffevent in Wallstreet gnd its surround- ings to-day was the announcement of the suspen- | sion Of the bankieg firm of the Messrs. Turner | Wrothers. It preduced a demoralizing effect. | “These gentlemea have been recognized as repre- sentatives Of some of the large railway taterests, although at Use same time they are said to have carried a great deal of real estate, and their pro- nounced inwbility to stand against the existing pressure seems to have been accepted as an indi- | cation of‘@munderiying weakness im the market | which s®oner orlater must bring down other | houses “that have not been more suspected than | this. The firm (s represented as having made large; @avances to the Indianapolis, Bloomington | and Western Railway Company, a new road, | whier, like others, having succumbed to present | Stagmation, hes involved its supporters in ruin. | Such particulars as belong to the public will be | found-elsewhere. It 1s said that trom $1,000,000 to | $2,500,000 is involved in the failure; but, in the | absence of the reports withheld by the firm, it | may be injustice to indulge in the recountal of e@ovaile given to the street. ie 0) THE STOCK MARKET, } History is again repeating itself, The market | ‘appears to be undergoing the experience that fol- | ‘lowed 1858. The panic is still attended by its shadow. Prices are dull and stocks possess no | 74) emsticity. On the contrary, some of them have sdrooped to a lower point than was auoted at any | period during the pastyear. The market was not | 4 raided apparently m the slightest degree, but yielded to natural influences, among which was the sale of long stock thrown overboard by old holders, and purchased by the ‘shorts’? and those | ‘who skirmish on THE OUTPOSTS, Wabash, for instance, sold at 32% To-day it sold at 29%. Erie in the panic was now it is 294%. Ohio and Mississippi was then itis now 22%. Delaware and Lackawanna is 3 per cent above the highest prices of 1873, but Pacific Mail is 36%; per cent below. It is said that | some of the German bankers were heavy sellers of | stocks to-day, and from this source there is an in- timation of even lower figures. The range of the market was as follows, and it will be seen that it is not encouraging ew York Central declined, as compared with last night’s prices, from 97% to 974; U., C, and I. C., from 18 to 17 Erie, irom 2934 to 2944. Harlem was steady. Lake Shore lost | 1% per cent; Northwest Common, 1%, per cent; Ohio and Mississippi, { per cent; Paciflc Mail, 1 percent. Rock Island showed a loss of *; per cent; St. Paul, 1% per cent; Wabash, 27; per cent; | Union Pacific, 14, per cent; Western Union, 1',. THE TRANSACTIONS to-day amounted to 154,092 shares, which were dis- tributed as follows :—Westera Cnion, 29,110; Union Pacific, 17,000; Wabash, 26,250; Pacific Mail, 14,700; Unio and Mississippi, 3,500; New York Central, 3,120; St. Paul, common, ; do., preferred, 100; Lake Shore, 36,200; Erie, 3,400; Rock Island, 4,310; Northwestern, 7,700; C., C. and 1. C., 400; Delaware | ana Lackawanna, 400. THE GOLD MARKET. Gold opened at 110% and closed at 111\j, the strength being partially due to the improvement in foreign exchange. The attitude of affairs at | Washington and the complication in France are in the panic. | 35 5%, 2145 | aiso incidents that enter into the causes of the ad- | 5 vance. There was likewise a large existing short interest whicn required but @ shghtimpetas to | K induce a covering process. The rates paid for bor- | ie Towing were 1 to 3 per cent and flat. | The operations of the Gold Exchange Bank to-day were as follows: Gold balances. .. Currency baiances.. Gross clearance: CLEARI Currency exchanges. Currency balance: Gold exchanges Gold balances $1, 187,349 | Money was easy at 2 a 3 percent on call. exchange was advanced to 4.89 for prime bankers’ | sixty days sterling and 4.915; for demand. rates are the highest since the present system of | quoting exchange was adopted. On the street | prime bankers’ sixty days sterling sold at 4.87% | and demand at4.90};. The shipments of specie to Europe to-day amounted to $100,000 and Havana $50,000, making a total of $150,000, gold | coin, The specie engagements for Europe w- | morrow amount to $300,000, RAILROAD BONDS were in the main firm, although exceptional sales ‘were made at lower prices.
