The Courier of Monday says:. There were reports of people being drowned in the lake without number, but we have been un- able to ascertain that any of these reports were true. Since the passage of the new law the police have arrested over 100 children for playing musical Instruments in the public streets. Some of these have been sent to the various institutions in the | | city for the care of children, and the remainder have been placed in charge of tbe Italian Consul, under whose care they have been returned to their native country. When the children are arrested they are brought to the Central Office, where they are handed over to the care of mrs. Webb. the matron. She has them washed and cleaned and detains them until the Cunsul has made arrange- ments for their future protection. Whenever the police are able to discover that children are work- ingior @ padrone whois making a profit out of their wanderings, they arcest him and arraign him before a police magistrate. This course of action 1s rapidly doing away with the uuisance of street | music, us the organ grinders and other strect musicians find they can get little or no money when they are deprives of the children as beggars. SANITARY , MATTERS, Shall Streets Be Sprinkled with Salt Water!—The Work of the Week. ‘The Board of Health decided yesterday that salt water, as has been complaimed, ia not an injurious street sprinkler but on tue contrary a healthful one. The reason forthe utterance of this opinion by tne Board is the trouble existing since the advent | of the spring. The right ‘to use the Croton water belongs to asmall number of persons who have obtained tuat privilege, through puiiticai induence, tor small amounts. Owners of carts who contract witu householders to sprinkle the streets are charged heavy rates for the Croton water, and in some Cases the prices demanded have been 80 ex. orbitaat that the cartmen went to theriver.
