; FINANCIAL AND COMMERCLIL, Our Shipping Interests—A Prize for Which | | mixed values, which 18 @ decrease from last week the Nation Should Compete, THE CRASH IN VIENNA. A Loss Equal to the Amount of the French Payment to Germany. SHARP DECLINE IN STOCKS, | Money and Gold Easy—Government and Railroad Bonds Steady. WALL STREET, Turspay, June 2—6 P, Me Among the discouraging ‘eatures of the present situation, and one that sooner appeal for correction to public thougot, is the lact that an increasing proportion of our ocean trans- Portation is done by foreign vessels. The number ‘of vessels entered in American ports for the year 1874 over that of 1873 was 1,822, of which 1,287 were Owned abroad, There was an increase of 525 in the number of American vessels entered, but this was not large enough to keep the proportion of domestic tonnage as large as it was in 1873, as of the total tonnage entered and cleared tor the tweive months ended January 31, 1874, 696 per cent belonged to foreigners, as compared with 67.3 per cent for the tweive’ months ended January @1, 1873. This is a prize tor which OUR NATION SHOULD COMPETE. We find that in 1872 the amount paid to foreign sveamships was as follows:—~ Freight money Passage money ( passengers....... Passage money (immigrants) P Total... ee $181, Aad passage money paid by foreign first class passengers........ + 2,987,520 Grand total. . In 1861 ‘we wore eurning 71 per cent of the $106, 158,371 3 or later must | corresponding payments made in that year, but | to-day all but the last small item oes out of our own pockets and not a dollar comes back again. The sum of $10,158,371 of ireight ‘constitutes a yearly tax, that {s paid, Pro rata, by every inhabitant of this country. It iseminently desirable that an impost of such Magnitude, when collected, should be spent at home; nor should it be forgotten that the entire sum of $134,754,921 is a drain upon our nattonal supply of gold, simce it must all be accounted for in that medium of exchange, and notin paper money. This drain has been going on now for ten years, and yet no statesman in or out of Con- gress has proposed a practical remedy. Is it not time that our political leaders took counsel on this subject ? Last month was the anniversary of THE GREAT CRASH IN VIENNA in 1873, We learn from our European exchanges that traces of that unfortunate event are not even yet totally obliterated. Sixteen joint stock com- Panies, forty-four banks, thirty-six industrial com- Panies, eighteen building societies and ove insur- @nce company, representing in the aggregate a capital value of 313,500,000 florins, continues to the Present day under the Bankruptcy Court, With regard to other more fortunate establisnments, which have managed somenow to weather the storm, the effects of the vrash are painfully visible iM the quotation of shares, The shares of the Greditanstait, for instance, have fallen from 216 Morins to 217, those of the Angio-Austrian Bank have lost 128 out of their 262, those of the Es- | compte Bank have been reduced trom 1,208 to 860, Union Bank shares have fallen from 227 to 102, Franco-Austrian Bank shares from 122 to 32, Veremsbank shares from 131 to 11, Austrian Gen- eral Bank shares trom 267 to 51, Giro and Cassen- Verein shares from 640 to 202, Commercial Bank shares from 261 to 68; the shares of the Bank- verein are depreciated from 335 to 72, those of the Wechselsterbangeselischait from 152 to 69, those of the Hypothekarrentenbank from 106 to i4; Ver- kehrsbank are quoted at 80 instead of 200; Laen- derbankenverein at 45 instead of 147, Allgemeine Oesterreichische Bangeselischatt 69 instead of 222 , and Wiener Bangesellschaft 63 instead of 192, Uther establishments ave suiered in proportion. | ‘The total loss incurred is estimated at two mil- | ards of Norins, which 1s about the same sum as the French indemnity paid to Germany—viz., five milliards of irancs, THE MONEY MARKET.
