FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, | Strength in the Stock Market—A Reaction. GOLD STEADY. Money Abundant at 3 and 4 Per Cent. eae ee eee Set SOVERNMENT BONDS FIRM. Railroad and Southern Securities With- out Much Change. WALL STREET, } MONDAY, May 25—6 P. M. It was not easy to analyze the condition of the tock market to-day because it was abnormal and | unexpected, 1t showed much of the adroit ma. Dipulation that has occurred from time to time during the last sixty days, Temporarily there was acertain kind of strength that encouraged bulls | to buy more and bears to become bulls. Western | Union was the leader. We have no other informa- tionon the subject than that the stock had been | “pat” at 7434 to the amount of 20,000 shares, and | it was deemea prudent to advance the price of the stock, Looking over THE FIELD it appears as if dealing in stocks—instead oi being a matter of calculation, as was formerly the case— has degenerated. business men, instead of obey- ing facts, watching figures and basing their judgment upon intrinsic values, now seem inclined to follow a leader, although | it be to the bad. They appear to ignore existing commercial conditions. Otherwise they would take into account the present status of the | country; the continued depression; the decline in the traflic of railroads; the suspension of mannfac- turing interests; the defaults at home and abroad | in so-called dividend paying stocks; the prospec- live failare of crops; the aggressive warfare made by some of the Western States upon great railway curporations, throwing them into courts, from | which we may expect only doubt for mouths to | come, and a score of other commercially | DEBILITATING INFLUENCES, | Jrom which there can be no definite result for | maby months. One would think that the legiti- | Mate operators of Wall street ought to gauge their | judgments by the logic of these events rather than trust their fortunes to the “points” and manipula- lations of the hour. When a man risks his money | agatst the future tt calls tor a brave front. When he | yields toa temporary and artificial market that may saddenly go against him at any hour In less than | a week it argues a purely speculative dispos'tion, in which are mingled the elements of a gambler and an ignoramus. Fairly diagnosed the stock | market to-day was comparatively strong. In other words, it ‘held its own” at prices averaging 34 per cent above the opening prices today and the | closing prices of Saturday, Whatever gains were made during sharp business hours were followed by recession at the close, as shown by the figures recorded below.. The principal dealings were in ‘Western Union, Lake Shore, Union Pacific, Wabash and st. Paul common. THE INVESTMENT SHARES were strong, with more activity in the dealings, The special feature was Delaware, Lackawanna | and Western, which was in vrisk demand, and rose from 108 to 109%. MonDay, May 25—6 P. M. There was considerable irregularity in certain departments ot trade to-day, but it was confined to those marts which have been controlled of late by speculators, The irregularity was brought about in some instances by the failure of operators to keep up their margins—in view of which business was circumscribed. On ‘Change flour was dull and lower. Wheat was lower but decidedly active | for export, the sales being heavy and the market closing steady. Corn and oats were dull and lower. Whiskey was firmer but not active. Pork and lard were at a standstill, The market was almost nominal for both at lower figures, Freights wore firmer. Cotton was not in demand. Speculation | in “futures was but moderately active. Sugar was sustained in value. Coffee was quiet and nominal, Rosin was firmly held. Spirits turpentine was dull, Tar neglected. Petroleum was more firmly heid. Correx.—Apart from a sale of 300 bags Rio per steamer Ontario on private terms, there was no business reported from first hands.
