The total is Upwards of $125,000,000, Analyzing the report, however, it appears that, although the defauits on the 1st of January, 1874, amounted to $54,150,000, or 433g per cent. of the whole, and that $13,700,000 are likely to be subject to defanit hereaiter, there 48 scarcely one of these securities which would have successfully found a market any where In the United States, Wall street refused them; the capitalists of the country elsewhere refused them, and it is only the BLIND FAITH OF FOREIGN LENDERS in American promises to pay that has cost them the loss of which they complain. Upon them alone Tests the blame, if any there be, of giving credence to statements not backed by approved figures and prospectuses indorsed by the highest commercial authorities of this country. It is to be regretted that such a condition of affairs exista abroad, for the influence cannot but prove pernicious, Sharp Practice of the kind, instead of being branded here as absolutely dishonest, is too oiten alluded to quite approvingly as “Yankee smartness’? or “Yankee shrewdness,” and this is one reason why the nation, or rather the national morality, is held Tesponsible and the really good bonds of the coun- ty are brought under THE BAN OF FOREIGN CONDEMNATION.
