FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, a The Stook Market Unsettled and Fluctuating. GOLD 1117-8 TO 1121-8, Money Abundant—Government and Railroad Securities Steady. WALL STREET, Wapnespay, May 10-3. MS ‘The view of the stock market which has been recently presented in this column was again ' Ulustrated by the+events of to-day. Prices Were advanced, but refused to stay. Pur- chasers were neryous, and gold with the first symptoms of weakness, Operations were confinea chiefy to the large speculators who understood the meaning of every movement on the financial chess board. There 18.no basis, yet established on which an upward movement can be made, because confidence is lacking. There isa plethora ef money, but little faith. The majority of outsiders who invested on the long side, obedient to “hints” and predictions, Rave Jost their cash and retired from tne feild, The minority are now waiting tor bottom. When that is likely to be reached no man can tell. It is but fair to say that it is equally hazardous to Bpeculate on the short side of the market, for at any moment THE SEORET WIRES May be pulled that will send prices upwards one, two or three per cent, The control ts artificial, bust the general condition is emphatically obedient to the commercial debility and stagnation every- where observable in the country. There have been occasions when Wall street refused to obey external influences ana ran counter to the sug- gestions of the outer trade; but now It is forced to yield and adapt itself to the shrinkage o1 values elsewhere recoraed. This fact explains the aim- culty which the bulls experience in keeping prices up to the point to which they have been pressed. Natural contraction is producin;y its legitimate reauits, and between poverty and wari- ness there is not much disposition on the part of, | those who usually Mill the coffers of stockbrokers to” engage in further ventures until a permanent aituation is mapped out. THE TRANSACTIONS by today amounted to 165,063 shares. The analysis of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Company’s report, published to-day, was received with some degree of disappointment, but | the stockholders must not expect impossibilities 0 nor overlook the diMculties which have beset the | 400 present management. There is no doubt that | Jarge reductions have been and’ are constantly being made in the operating expenses of the road, which would compare favorably with the past. The management have to labor at present | under some peculiar disadvantages, which require | time to overcome, ationg which may be men- tioned that the company started the current year with @ floating debt of $6,654,421 (about half of which has since been funded), and that the interest and sinking fund will require some $800,000 more than last year, also the Joss of a certain portion of the Southwestern trade by the transier of the Cleveland, Columbus and indianapolis line to the contro! of the Erie and Atlantic and Great Western combination, and of the Toledo, Wabash and West- ern to that of the Canada Southern. All this, | added to the fact that from January the gross | 5 earnings have continued to show constant decrease | as compared with last year, make the difiicuities of the road temporarily grave, but there is really nO good reason why, in the course of time, the company should not be upon a foundation that will call for no other than favorable criticisms at home THE UNITED STATES TREASURY. The internal revenue receipts to-day amounted to $360,801. WEDNESDAY, May 12—6 P, M. The markets were generally quiet without de- cided change. At the Produce Exchange business was very modeiate. Flour was dull. Woeat was in moderate demand but steady. There was some demand for forward delivery, but the sales actually consummated were not large. Corn was in de- mand, and better prices were realized—the market closing firm at the improvement. Oats were dull, unsettled and decidediy lower. Whiskey was firmer. Pork and lard were without decidea change. Groceries remained dull. There was no disposition evinced to operate except at conces- sions. Cotton was in demand at higher prices, both for “spot” and “future.” Freights were quiet and easter. Petroleum was unsettied and again lower, clos- ing weak at the decline. Naval stores were dull, and could not be placed at quoted prices, save in small lots. Corron on the spot wasin demand, and but for tha extreme views of holders a more liberal business would have resulted.
