The total payments by the ‘Treasury ON account of May interest to date amount to $7,401,000, THE STOCK MARKET to-day showed further indications of the weakness ‘that has prevatied and irom time to time has been predicted in this column. While prices fluctuated, thus temporarily strengthening the hopes of those who are holding stocks, the tendency was con- stantly downwards, There was, in fact, no evi- dence of & poyer that could stem the current. Buyers were chary, permanent investors stood aloof and waited for the bottom to be touched, and brokers ana speculators for a short turn consti. tuted the chief actors in the scene. A good many margins were wiped out and not a few individuals ‘wore woeful visages. It is unnecessary to re. iterate the causes for this condition, for they have been made familiar, Activity and duiness, firmness and depression, have | Mes alternated with each other during the past irty days, and the process may be again ang Gold Weak---Money Easy---Securities 109% @ 10992; ten-lorty bonds, 1043;; new fives, | rency sixes, 116% a@ 116%; do. do, 1881, registered, 1195 @ 119%; do. do. do., cou- pon, 121% @ 121%; do. five-twenties, 1862, | ‘The Pacific mortgages were a) shade lower, Centrals selling at 94%, Union firsts . ey at 85%, land grants at 80 and incomes at 8414, | ‘The Custom Honse receipts to-day were $479,000, | | Atlantic and Pacific Te: NEW YORK HERALD, again repeated, but each decline only goes to prove the natural debility of the market when left | } U0 to itself, and the probability that it will continue to exhibit varying phases until Congress, by settling the currency question, enables legitimate business to take a fresh start. Then, in the in- creased earnings of railroads—for these constitute THE STOCK IN TRADE OF WALL sTREET— we may see a recovery {rom the existing depres- sion that will make glad the hearts of all who are now in the “Slough of Despond,” Meanwhile Jet it be borne in mind that thirty-five miluons of people are economizing and spending two dollars where they were wont to spend three. This is the real keynote of the situation. When the business pulse beats strong we shall have no more paralysis.
