Ee FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Currency---Questions Involved in | ils Successful Free Banking. MONEY ABUNDANT Fluctuation in the Stock Market— An Unexpected Rally. GOLD 112 1-4. WALL hare } Werpwespay, May 6—6 P.M. Our paper currency will never appreciate to its Proper standard and become & measure of value Until it 1a convertible into coin, ‘the sole object ot money is not to pay debts, The creditor nas & Tight to be consulted about the commodity he is to Teceive. Statutes make it a legal tender, and the Citizen 1s forced to accept the same, no matter ‘what may be its worth; but there isa bigher law of trade which regulates that worth. Paper money enters upon its great priesthood only when it oM- clates as the prime minister of commerce, the ‘agent of exchange, the standard of values; that ®ommon denominator on which you can write the waiue of every fraction of the world’s wealth: that gubtle indicator whereby the farmer, merchant and manufacturer, when they have thrown their productions into the great bazaar of nations, can know how much they are to receive in return, Ir- Yedeemable paper money never had these char- acteristics and never can have. It is simply A USURPER that has not only demonetized coin ana made it a marketable commodity, but has, in its own career, unsettled the substantial basis upon which all commerce should rest. Nevertheless the crys for more. In some way the South and West seem de- termined to have it, although the testimony of good business men is that we have enough—not enough, perhaps, to float wildcat securities to par, Dut enough to effect the ordinary exchanges of commodities, The additional issue will probably take place through the medium of free banking, but unless 1t be attended by some measure that breaks down the partition between paper and specie—such, for instance, as a judicious retirement of legal ten- ders—we shall continue to subject the results of every man’s labor to the hazards of a ceaseless Dattle between the bulls and bears. The country bas had enough of panics, and now seeks rest and monetary stapility. THE MONEY MARKET, Money closed easy at from 3 to 4 per cent for call 7 loans. Commercial paper remaing at rates here- tofore quoted. The foreign exchanges were frm om & moderate business. Bankers’ sterling on London sold at 4.873g a 4.88 for 60 days and 4.9014 401 for demand. There was a fair demand from the bankers for commercial sterling, and sales ‘Were made at 4.85 a 4,8634, according to grade, the latter for bankers’ acceptances. The leading banker drawing on Paris to-day advanced his rates to 5.16 for long francs and 6.40 for short; other bankers ask 6.15% and 5.104, with sales at 5.1634 and 5.114%. Reichsmarks are firm at 95% 8 96 for bankers’ long, 96% for short amd 953, for commer- ‘cial. THE GOLD MARKET. Gold opened at 112% and declined to 112; but Jater in the day strengthened, and was steady and firm at 112% until the close. The rates paid for carrying were 2, 234, 4 per cent and flat. Then followed @ reaction and advance that was generally maintained until about two o'clock, when, the market being let alone, the bears rallied for @ final charge and succeeded in Sales of Hudson River secund | § depressing 1t from 3¢ to 1 per cent from the highest | prices. While it is said that there are shrewd men who make'their purchases on each Jall, and 80 help to re-establish the tone that may have been lost, there isa much larger number of per- sons who claim that the market is on the edge of a sharper decline than has yet been experienced, and that it will come like a thief in the night. Things may be described as looking shaky, The improvement of the day Was most observ- abie in Western Union, Pacific Mail and Union Pacific, The transactions amounted to 246,482, and the sales were divided as follows:— Western Union, 76,374; Union Pacific, 54,900; St. Paul, 13,800; Lake Shore, 35,360; Rock Island, 7,800; Wabash, 4,220; Pacific Mall, 21,400; Obto and Mississippi, 4,210; New York Central, 4,236; Erie, 2,200; C., C. and L. C,, 2,200; Northwestern common, 10,500; preferred, 1,100, The recent action of the Wisconsin Governor with reierence to the railroads passing through his dominions bas attracted more or less attention to St. Paul common and preferred, and developed a considerable quiet speculation, It was noticeable that the Germans were buyers to-day, and like- wise some of the brokers of the directors, and, looking at the Amsterdam quotations, there seems tobe reason for the demand, A seven per cent stock at 49 and 50, on which there has been no de- fault, and that is raided upon because of political complications in @ distant State, is one of the illustrations of the anomalous ways of watt | iz street.
