In the District of Columbia Investigation Com- mittee to-day several witnesses were introduced, who testified that no Salmar brick were used in the B street intercepting sewer, and that the work was first classin every respect. Lewis Clephane, Collector of the District, was recalled and exam. imed with reference to the formation of the “Metropolis” and other paving compa: prior to the letting of the coutracts by the Board of Public Works. He admitted that one of the objects in consolidating the various patent pavement in- terests was to prevent competition. Mr. Rae, of Chicago, testified that it had cost about $2 80 per square yard to lay the De Golyer and McCiclian pavement No. 2 in Washington, but that he had figured on the basis of receiving pay- ment in District scrip, and not in money. Mr. Kirtiand was again upon the stand this after- noon, and was examined about an hour and a half. His remarks were evasive and at times ridiculous. He reiterated his statement that he had received all | the proceeds of the Chit:enden notes, with the ex- ception of $10,000, which had been received by Rev. W. Calvin Brown, He was questioned sharply con- cerning an extract from a letter written by him, | dated New York, April 16, to Wilcox in this city, | in which he refers to McClellan as anass, Asa specimen of his replies to interrogatories tne fol- lowing furnishes a sample :~ By Judge Taurman— What do you mean in that letter by saying “McClellan is an asst’’ A. I mean that he did not do good work cn his Washington contract, and so informed the cacaeeinten: Q. Do you mean to say he was an ass for tell- ing the truth? A. I say he informed the committee that he aid’notds good work. The committee are very much dissatisfied with the replies made by the witness and do not give | much, if any, credit to his testimony. He inti- | | mated a desire to go to New York to-night. The | committee directed him to remain in the city and | | hold the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Senate respon- | | sible for his presence on Monday. The Senate Committee and the Currency Bill. The Senate Commtttee on Finance held a long | Session to day on the currency question. There is | = aificulty among the members on the general \ features of a free banking clause, of which they arein favor; but there is no agreement on the other branches of a financial bill, the members differing widely in their opinions. Statement by Judge Davis. The Committee of Ways and Means have received from Judge Davis a statement similar to that recently pablished in the HERALD, which seems to have been considered proper, owing to a supposed or alleged incorrect report of Hennan’s testimony before the committee. Sessions. It 8 @ singular fact that, notwithstanding the | severe panic of last fall and the hard winter, the number of 88 warrants issued on the ist | of May was much less than the average. At tne Thira District Civil Court only twelve were is- sued—less than any previous year. Mr. John P. O'Neill, @ distinguished member of a the New York Bar, delivers @ iecture on the now , | prominent subject of “Home Rule,” in Steinway Hali, next Wednesday evening, the proceeds of | which are to be devoted to the building of a church now being erected, under the auspices of Father | Daly, in England, Mayor Havemeyer has decided to return the “dog” ordinance to the Common Council to-mor- row, Without approval.
