FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL ' Free Banking and Specie Redemption. The Stock Market Firm and Active. GOLD STEADY. Foreign Exchange Near the Shipping Point— Government Bonds Strong. L STREET, } Trxspay, vet 28—6 P, M. , The uncertainty attaching to the prospective legislation of Congress on the subject of the cur- reucy continues to exert its legitimate effect, Busi- Bess is unsettled, trade dull, and speculation in Wall street confined to the few who by adroitness of combination and manipulation retain the con- tro! of the market. The country is awaiting the adjustment: of the difficulty with patience, though Opinions do not by any means concur as to the ul- | timate result. If we are to have a successful sys- tem of free banking it must be attended in some form or other by A SPECIE REDEMPTION, and that in the not too far distant fu- ture; otherwise the currency of the coun- try may be inflated scores of millions of dollars. Banking ts seductive. A great many people have the idea that it ts a business at once genteel and profitable, So {t is, and for that reason, if tt ts made free, without the qualification referred to or something equivalent, there would be im two or three years a volume of paper thrown upon the country that would distarp the entire economtcat relations of trade, The United States has solemnly pledged its taith “to make provision at the earliest practicable period for the redemption of its notes in coin,” and, in the lan- Suage of Senator Morton, it would-be a direct vio- Tation of that pledge to retire them and substitute for them an irredeemable bank paper, for the re- demption of which no provision is made. EXPORTS OF PRODUCE, ‘The total exports of produce irom this port for the week ending to-day amounted to $7,295,229, mixed vaines, which is an increase over last week Of $2,985,976. The exports for the corresponding Period of last year were $5,355,290, and for 1871, $3,244,186. The total exports of produce since January 1, this year, are $90,558,950, against $87,123,146 last year and $63,045,090 in 1872. THE FOREIGN MARKET, London advices report that the amount of bullion ‘withdrawn from the Bank of England on balance to-day was £105,000. Consols were weak at the close and American securities barely steady. The foliowing are late quotations :—Consols tor money, 92%; do. for account, 925; a 9234; five-twenty bonds of 1865, old, 1065; do. of 1867, 108%; ten- forty bonds, 104 a 104%; new fives, 104; Erie Rail- | ‘way shares, 32%; New York Central shares, 88, The rate for money at the Stock Exchange on government securities is 315 per cent. In Amster- dam Union Pacific stock is quoted at 29%, North- ‘western preferred 57% and Erie 31\. Paris espatches quote rentes at 59/, 8c. THE MONEY MARKET. Money loaned on cali at uncnanged rates—to ‘wit, from 3to 5 percent. Discounts are about the same, first class names selling at 6 and 7 per cent. Foreign exchange was easier, and the leading bankers reduced their rates to 4.8734 for eixty Gays’ sterling and 4.90:¢ for demand, with actual’ business at 4.87 and 4.90. Commercial bills are ‘ecarce. We do not learn that cngagements tot gold coin have yet been made for to-morrow’s @teamers, but well informed bankers express the belief that we are on the eve of specte shipment: THE GOLD MARKET. This market was more steady than yesterday, and attended with less fluctuation and excite- ment, The opening sales were made at 11334, trom which there was a decline to 113 and an ad- vauce to 113%. The close was made at 113, The fates paid for carrying were 4, 3};, 3 aud finally 2 per cent. The decline was doubtless due to the failing off of the price of exchange. The movement of stocks to-day was again en- couraging to those who are on the long side of the | market. Considerable activity was exhibited and the advance of yesterday generally well main- tained, with further improvement in exceptional cases, The leaders of the market were Western Union, Union Pacific, Lake Shore and Pacific Mail. Of Western Union there were sold 87,930 shares; Union Pacific, 54,600; Pacific Mail, 29,600; Wabash, 9,625 ; Ohio and Mississippl, 2,550; New York Cen- tral, 11,220; Lake Shore, 33,400; C.,C. andl. The advance of the day ranged from 3% to 2% per cent, but towaras the close there was a perceptible unwillingness on the part | of many operators to carry their loads over night, | which caused a relapse from the buoyancy of eariter hours, Baers Se 5g of x x z easeaus E THE PRICES.
