| | FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The President’s Veto Favorably Received Abroad. ——____. THE VOICE OF $1,000,000,000! Wall Street. Magnates Un- settled and Depressed. DECLINE IN GOLD. Railroad Bonds and Government Secu- rities Steady. Wain Srezsr, } THURSDAY, Sori 23—6 P.M, ‘The effect of the President’s veto has been sharply manifest. What it has done in the stock and other markets will be seen in the reports ‘Whien follow. These influences may be only tem- porary and specuMtive; but it is gratifying to know that the voice of the commercial centres of Europe is in accord with that which has spoken in Washington, Itis in Europe that we are meas- ured on a gold basis. Every step that we take in the direction of gold payments, whether they be of home or foreign debt, is there naturally hailed ‘With satisfaction, because indicative of a real na- tional strength, which, though heretofore per- ‘verted, now bids fair to be used in the wholesome @ischarge of all our national obligations, Inflation ‘was ag much feared in Europe as it hasbeen by a Jarge community in America, and THE PLUCK OF THE PRESIDENT, in antagonizing the views of his Western constit- uents and standing firmly by his early recom- mendations, has unquestionably increased the con- Mdence with which our bonds will everywhere abroad be regarded, and will Induce increased in- Vestments in American securities, The bankers of London, Paris, Amsterdam—tin fact, of all cities thronghout the Continent—have but one thought on the subject, and that is that the President, in Planting himself on a great principle, has per- formed an act that will redound to the financial and commercial credit of the country. THE MONEY MARKET. Money was in good demand during the day and ‘temporarily commanded 7 per cent on call, but later was easier and closed at4and 5 per cent, The shrinkage of values which has recently taken place has led toa shifting of loans and an unset- tiing of the money market. Foreign exchange closed up quiet and firm at 4.85% @ 4.86 lor prime bankers’ sixty days’ sterling, and 4.88) a 4.88% lor demand, . THE GOLD MARKET ‘Was unfavorably affected by the President's veto. The price deciined from 113 to 112%, the principal. business 01 the day being done at the latter Ngure, There is reason to believe, however, that prices will not long stay at this point, inasmuch as the 1st of May usually superinduces preparations for the payment of foreign interest, and brings up the question whether or not we shall be compelled to ship gold. The market 1s now very nearly on the edge of the shipping point. OPERATIONS OF THE GOLD EXCHANGR BANK. Gold baiances., Carrency balances. Groas clearances. CLEARING HOUSE STATEMENT. Currency exchanges. Currency balances. Gold exchanges. Gold balances, . The carrying rates were 3, 33, 4, 2% 1 flat, and Anally 3 per cent. THuRsDAY, April 23—6 P. M. ‘The Presidential veto of the Inflation bill was succeeded by @ material decline in the gold premium, in view of which the merchandise mar- kets were ansettied and values in many instances rendered nominal. Most commodities were ad- versely affected, but in some the speculative move- ment, which had been inaugurated in the conf- dent expectation that the Inflation bill would .Tecéive the sanction of the President, nad acquired such headway and s:rength that but a slight decline ‘was experienced. Nevertheless, speculation re- ceived a decided check, and forward sales were invariably on a lower basis, Values ®hat had in Many cases been carried up materially on the simple belief of a larger discrepancy between the currency and gold were rendered mérely nominal, and even though the decline was but slight the reaction was generally regarded as hardly set in as yet, and « further decline was looked for. But, on the other hand, many commodities remained auigt and comparatively steady with a legitimate business tm progress. At the | Produce Exchange there was no little irregularity.
