* from the beginning.” FINANCIAL AND CONWERGLAL |: ~ = Wanted—Better Money and a More Solid Basis. PAPER NOT A STANDARD VALUE The Stock Market a Trifle More Steady---A Slight Rally. GREENBACKS 87 CENTS AND 9 MILLS. WALL STREET, Monpay, April 15—4 P. u} Whenever you make paper money without in- "trinsic value a legal tender gold will disappear from circulation. Whenever gold disappears public credit is depreciated, and people begin to distrust their government. The premium on coin 1s the Measure of their want of faith. Hence, tn the lan- guage of Mr. Morton, “the greenback was @ curse What we want is not papor money, but enterprise stimulated by better money. We want, as laborers, pay for @ day’s work that will not sbrink in value. We want o “money” Yepresented in Great Britain, Germany or france that will as weil mingle with the “money” represented in America, less the Price of exchange, and engage in the development ‘of our industries; for this is the currency that, like water, will find its level, and always maintain ‘the nighest standard that attaches to perfect ‘Wealth. We want a money that is not affected by the stamp and number of a printing press or the act of a Congress of demagogues. Paper promises cannot be a standard of value, though they may bridge a debt, cheat a laborer and fill the pockets ofa gambler. AN ENGLISH OPINION. A London morning journal, of recent date, dis- ‘Cussing our financial situation, uses the following ‘significant language :— There ia a large class of speculators and Gold Room operators whose interest is directly opposed Ba resumption; and the profound ignorance of the entury principles of economical sctence eer prevails in the United States enables those Antereated parties to persuade tue public that the country is benefited by keeping up prices and Diaintaining an abundance of money in circula- tuon. And thus we have the extraordinary spec- tacle of both houses of Uongress combining to undo the progress made by tie country since the ‘War towards gold payments. No doubt the growth of the Union in wealth and population will, in the course of a lew years, once more pbrin; it abreast of the position it now occupies, an ae, the government will be able to resume payments without serious loss alter a inger or shorter interval, according as the accu- ion of wealth is more or less rapid. But when thts point is reached there will, of course, | bio In arise a cry for inflation, which will necessa- be once more gratified, unless the economical eancatin of the people is very greatly improved, and, stili more, unless the corruption which now revalls is abated and the mode o: selecting mem- Ts of Congress and Cabinet Ministers ts entirely |. How, for example, can it be expected ‘that the financial interests of the country will be fernies towhen they are confided to men who ve never received a liberal education and whose only acquaintauce with financia! administration is Aerived trom the management of a shop tn a coun- try town or some such similar occupation? THE MONEY MARKET. . Money was steady to-day at 4 per cent on call. Discounts unchanged. Foreign exchange was Jower im the afternoon, and closed at 4.8434 for Prime bankers' sixty days’ sterling and 4.88 for demand. Greenbacks to-day were worth 83 a 87a 87 and 9 mills. Important Sale of West Side Property. There is no subject of larger interest to the aver- age New Yorker than that of reai estate values ia this city and county, as there is nothing in which can be more readily seen a reflection of the country’s prosperity than suck values. Occupying pre-eminently the position of the metropolitan centre of this aggregation of commonwealtns, aet by the mere accident of geographical location, or through tae preference of mere political condi- tions, it has come to be recognized as THE CAPITAL OF TH COUNTRY through 1:8 larger and treer cosmopolitan growtt of thought and instinct, through its higver cultiva j tton of art and science and literature, through its grander appreciation of talent in these several departments, and its more generous and unseo- tional recognition of the same; through 1s broader application of the elegancies of life to dally use, or to sum up, its higher estuewe culture than prevails cisewhere, quite independent of its superior claims in @ Merial senae. Te 18 admitted even by its rivals to be THE GREAT CITY OF THE CONTINENT, the foremost community of the New World, When the struggling Ure of genius iirst begins to warm into Ife and purpose him who possesses ib, it here that comprehension and reward 18 sought, When the labor of years, whether it ve of brain or arm, has accumulated the means of a dignified ease In the decline of ile, whether that means has been acquired in the corn flelds of the'West or the cotton elds of the South, within the sound of the whirr of New England muitl wheels or amid the giant scenery of some distant gold State, New York woos to her stately tomes the successaiut of every State, and wraps the mantle of her charity labor has had less ‘vin Maine to Cali jortuuate results, All Jornia, do homage to THK IMPERIAL DIGNITY OF THIS GREAT METROPOLIS. What wonder is it, thea, that real estate owners cherish the tdea of the superior qualsy of New York real estate values? There is not @ spike driven in the construction of any railroad through- | out the country buc What contrioutes to thas | value—notan acre of ymgin soil won to cultivae | tion, not an ear of corn, not a seal of wheat nor a poa of cotton grown in the Unit tates that does | Bot pay toli here, ‘The mills of New Kngland, the | COUtOD gins oF tne South anid the crushing mac aines | of Nevada and ldaho, as well as the varied indus- | trial bum of the Pacitte > have their echo 1 our busy Streets. Here is THE AVEX OF AMERICAN GROWTH, American enterprise and American cultivation, 18 | i8 not surprising, therelore, as has been said be- alike, tes, all | fore here, to find owners of real estat | notwitustanding the prevailing dutness, col fident of ‘the maintenance - of real estate Values, Whether speculative or permanent, as | somerning which, whatever may be the result of | temporary conditions, are always sound, always | stable and always appreciative in the NandS of those who have the avility—that is, the financial | strengti—to disregard ephemeral tides of reces- sion that vecur irom tume to time, merely to mark, as it were, the force of the regular dow; that is when an interval of dulness finds certain WEAK HOLDER unab e to carry over to the next season of activity heavy ourdens with which they nad injudiciously loaded themselves, and they consequently compelled to .orce 4 sale at lower figures or suffer foreclosure. ‘he last lew months las been just such @ season of dulness, m which the transac: tions were mainly the resuit of foreclosures. When: We sali have reached the end of these, and the property, which in the hands of these weak capitalists was always tremoling on the verge of & sacrifice, has passed into strong hands, the imar- ket will be the better tor tt, and will be prepared | fora new departure. And that this will not be long there are already indications in the INORKASED OFFERING OF MONEY TO LOAN ON BRAT. ESTATE, which would seem to prove that much previously employed in that way, as been recently released and 18 now seeking fresh imvestment. Anotner healthy sign of recurring activity, should the re- sult prove propitious, is to be found in the an- nouncement of a sale ol twenty-eight lots situate variously on the Grand Boulevard and Sixty-ninch street, Tenth avenue, Seventy-sixth and Seventy- seventh streets, ioe Four lots on east side of Grand Boulevard, beginning at southeast corner of Sixty-ninth street, iour lots on Sixty-math street, adjoining, and twenty lows on the west end of the block bounded by tenth avenue, Seventy- sixth and Seventy-seventu streets. ‘he above all choice property, the BOULEVARD LOTS, being of extra size, ranging from 32 feet 6 inches | front and 161 feet 8 inches on sixty- Beg and 28 ieet 11 inches rear, to 25 feet front, 100 Zz 103g snenes southern boundary and ~ feet 2% inches rear. fbe Boulevard here is mpletely Muished and Sixty-eighth and Sixty-ninen streets curbed and gutiered. The bulk of the otwer sales announced jor the coming week are | either by order or a referee or executor, in parta- | tion, or foreclosure. and this is clearly cercain to be the feature ol the week’s business. | ‘The week opened yesterday upon a fair attend- ance at the Exchauge Salesrooms, although the offerings were light and free of any special im | terest | THE SOLID CHARACTER OF REAL ESTA’ investment, however, in a city like New York, en- | joying the spectal privileges which New York en- joys, always brings a fair proportion of interested | dealers around any sale thai is known to be Dona Jide, if the market 1s active they congregate to ‘avail themselves of any opportunity that may present itsell to join in the flood of the tide ana share in the profit of its onward flow; if tt ts duit they seek chances to pick up @ nice piece of ; ertyat a low figure, well knowing that the in- | evitable course of events in the New York real | estate marcet will guarantee them | A PROFIT SOONKR OR LATER. , Ot course there may be exceptions to this rule, | such are needed to prove it, but they take color from surrounding local conditions and are beyond | the government of any general rule. But this tact stands out prominentiy in the front of real estate investment in this city and county, that where | capital has gone boldly in and invested it has, un- less under pecullar accidental circumstances, al- Ways met atull return. Where property on thiv island has been sold at a sacrifice upon its jormer price 16 has always been under circumstances Which lorced & sale either because of the weak- ness Of the holaer or some other accidental con- dition, They who bought and were able to hold— that is—bought on sufficient capital to justify their purchase, have invariably reabzed a profit.
