FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL | The Work of the Senate and the Duty of the House. THE NEOESSITY OF REDEMPTION. A Dull Day in the Stock Marke! Fluctuating and Lower. Prices MONEY EASY—GOLD STEADY WALL STREET, Turspay, April 7—6 P. wu} ‘rhe Senate has passed the two bilis that ax our | currency at $300,000,000. The House of Represen- tatives is yet tobe heard from. Then a committee Of conference. On these contingencies Wall street | ia to-day awaiting. Nevertheless the thought can- it not be too persistently pressed home that an in- | crease made to the existing currency, in order to | gratify present clamor, would in the long run make it not more eMicient for tue carrying on of business, Add to the quantity and the value fs lessened. Apparent increase of price would follow, because it would take more paper promises to buy 4 given quantity of gold, wheat, lumber or iron. These commodities would not be worth more, but the currency would be worth lesa. The sum and sub- atance of the whole argument is that we should set our faces steadily and persistently toward such a redemption of our currency as will bring it to a par with gold, while at the same time we should a@yvoid too hasty contraction, We can produce gold enough to resume specie payment; but specie | payment will never be required as long as the | knowledge o! this fact exists. What the country needs is confidence, not gold, When Congress fixes the value of a legal tender on a gold basis, | 20 redeems its promises to pay, provides a method whereby one-fourth of its outstanding currency can re-enter its treasury and be substituted for | coin, from that moment the problem 1s solved. | THE UNITED STATES TREASURY. | 3m The customs receipts to-day were $538,000. The | balances in the United States Treasury at the close of the day were:—Ourrency, $3,841,389; special deposits of legal tenders for redemption of | certificates of deposit, $52,215,000; coin balance, | $87,800,917; including coin certificates, $37,268,700 ; outstanding legal tenders, $32,000,000. PRODUCE EXPORTS. The total exports of produce from this port for | the week ending to-day amounted to $4,742,056 mixed vaiues, which 1s a decrease from last week of $1,305,912, The exports for the corresponding period of last year were $5,010,645, and for 1872, $3,595,198, ‘The total exports, since January 1, | this year, are $73,804,997, against $69,398,543 last Year and $56,611,421 in 1872. GOLD MARKET. Gold opened at 113%, went offto 113% a113X, but advanced again and closed at 113%. The pre- dictions of operators are generaliy in favor *) higher gold, and many of the larger dealers are buying quietly and awaiting results. It is not | anusual to hear such figures as 120, 125 | and 130 mentioned as future prices. Among | the members of the Gold Board no men are more | popular than Morton, Merrimon and Logan. The | rates paid for carrying ranged from 334 per cent to | fat, the final rate being 2 per cent, The Assistant | Treasurer to-day paid out $10,000 on account of | | \ i} ESSEEESESESE Interest and $20,000 in redemption of five-twenty bonds. The operations of the Goid Exchange Bank to-day were as follows: $1,871,251; currency balances, Clearances, $26,000,000, CLBARING HOUSE STATEMENT. | Currency exchanges. see $72,433,664 Currency balances. 2,176,758 | Gold exchanges. STOCK MARKET to-day was depressed, and the majority of sales ‘were made in the expectation of lower prices. No business man has faith in inflation. Even the speculator discovers a sudden reaction as the re- | sult of Senatorial legislation and has made haste to unload. The knowledge that some of the leaa- ing Senators who have been most biatant in de- manding inflation were operating in Wall street in @ pool of 40,000 shares has not tended | to elicit much confidence, and we have a5 & consequence a weaker market this evening tian has been observed for several days, The principal business was done in West- ern Union, New York Central, Lake Shore, Union Pacific, Northwestern, C., 0. and I. ©. and Pacific Mail. Western Union opened at 7914, but was sub- jected to severe pressure and declined to 78, From this point, bowever, there was a reaction, and the close was made at 75%, or % per cent less than yesterday. New York Central sold at 100% a 100% & 10044 & 10034 a 100%; a 100% a 100% a 100%. Ite Close yesterday was 100), a 100%. Pacific Mail commenced at 47%, sold down to 46% and closed at 46%. Erie sold at 30% a 39% a 35% a 38%, a de Cline. Rock Island ranged from 107 to 106% a 106%, Closing at 10644; also a decline from yesterday's | prices. Lake Shore declined from 79% to 777%, | ending, however, at 78%. St Paul moved downwards irom 43% to 42%, closing at | 42. Union Pacific fell off from 38 to 37% a 37)4, Ohio and Mississippi ranged from 30% to 29%, ena- ing at 30a 3034. Northwest, common, was quoted at 65 @ 54 & 6454 @ 544 a 54% O54; preferred opened at 71 and closed at 71}. Wabash sold at M6, 45% 24554 045% @ 45% 445%. OC. 0. andl oO likewise experienced a depressing influence and declined from 32% to 32, recovery, however, aiterwards being made to (a % percent. Atlan- tic and Pacific preferred soid at 16a 15%. Hannibal and St. Joseph closed at 31}. From the foregoing quotations it will be seen that prices are lower than yesterday, and that there is an irresistible | depression at work. M. The trade movement was somewhat accelerated by the action of the Senate on the Inflation bill yesterday, and the committal of both houses of Congress to that policy, with all the probabilities favoring the conviction that the President also favors that ruinous scheme, his numerous declara- tions to the contrary notwithstanding. The blighted faith of the nation having been broken | and all barriers to inflation broken down, there is nothing to prevent a still further departure from correct principles, and hence it is feared that ‘the country is about to be launched upon another era of speculation, which will in all likelihood have its culmination in another financial and commer- cial crisis, like unto that from which it has not yet en- tirely recovered, The volumes that have been written, the innumerable protests which have been uttered, and the many petitions from the financial and commercial centres which have been forwarded to Congress and the Executive against the poticy of inflation seem but to have incited a firmer determination on the part of our national legislators to rush the Inflation bill through in its most objectionable form. On ‘Change to-tay flour was firm. Wheat was firmer and tairly active. Corn was steady, with a good demana. Oats were steady. Whiskey was steady. larly the latter, for forward delivery. Freights were firm. Groceries were aull, with the exception of sugar, which met with a good demand at prices favoring the buyer, Cotton was quiet and steady for “spot,” but suf- fered a decline of }¥c. per Ib, for “futures.” Petroleum was {n moderate demand, the market opening easier but closing steady.
