——__—_ Whe Methodist Ministers om the Subject. Judging from the large audience which at aD early hoar gathered in the Mission Room of the Methodist Publisning House yesterday, the temper- ‘ance im-erest increases and becomes more intensi- fled with age. The discussion of this topic has intro- @uced a8 among the most valuable and earnest de- Batera some men whose voices are rarely if ever heard in the meetings of the Preacher’s Associa- hoa, But this subject has started them into a ReW state of mental activity, and, without press- tag themselves at all, they are pressed to the | front by their brethren. Yesterday the Rev. Delos Lull delivered an address of remarkable power pathos, which received the frequent and hearty applause of the meeting, in which were ‘geveral ludies, He said:— SUPPRESSION 18 THE GRBAT br ee na ur; but We must educate the ate ciples of total apstinence. Why all this talk wbout Christ turning Water into wine? When, he asked, dia Dr. Crosby Gnd out that wine 18 not wine unl it ferments? in regard to the objection of the impropriety of women conducting this crusade as they do, Mr. Lull remarked that be would trust those women as be Would angels. He had no fear of their im- proprieties, Let them stir up those Improprieties ; ‘the abuses of the women wii! only help their cause. He asked his brethren to stand by the women, but Jet the women KEEP CLEAR OF FARRY HILL cand all such men as ne. They can tight him, bnt not fight under his wing, He advised them never togo there and pray when Harry wanted them, bul to go when he did not want them, Dr. Foss, for the committee appointed last week, reported a se; ies of resolutions in which they re- commend the discussion of the principles of the temperance reform i all their pulpits; the holding ‘oi temperance, prayer and experience meetings, wand the lormation of temperance societies in all their churches and sunday 1001s. The resolu- tions also reaitirm the ministers’ belief in total ab- » gtinence as the true temperance ; they ask for prohi- bitory legislation and the enforcement of existing laws against intemperance and the sale, &¢., of In- toxicating liquors; they do not propose to the wo- men engaged in (his crusade any specific meas- ures, but ‘eave them to God. They will, however, co-operate with them. They pledge themselves to enforce the discipline and the recommendations ‘Of the last General Conference on this question. Rev. Mr. French thought the ministers should Wait Until they got the call from God through the women. A resolution was introduced by Rev. W. C. Steele endorsing the National Temperance So- ¢ciety’s publications, but the meeting could not go go lar us that, They, however, adopted the coim- mitwee’s resolutions and one in @ modified form re- lating to the Nauouai Temperance Society. Temperance on the West Side—A Large Mass Mecting—Dr. Crosby Denounced. A mass meeting o( the friends of the temperance eause was lield last night in the West Thirtieth street Methodist Episcopal churcn, between Eighth ana Ninth avenues, The attendance of both ladies and gentiemen was unusually large, far exceeding in point of numbers any gathering that has yet taken | lace in this city. The proceedings were opened yy the singing of the campaign hymn, ‘‘Nearer. My God, to Thee,” followed by a prayer offered by Rev. H. H, Birkins. The pastor of the church, Kev. Stephen Merritt, Jr., who presided throughout the Mecting, then introduced J. Aiexander Mowatt, ‘who spoke of the great antiquity of the temper- a@nce movement. He then reierred to the sermon delivered on Sunday last by Dr. Howard Crosby, Whom he denounced as an enemy to the temper- ance cause. Rev. Dr. W. C. Steele, of the Beekman Hill church, was the next speaker. remarks by reierring to the action of Dr. Crosby, ef whom he spoke in no measured terms. Rev. Mr. Merritt then addressed the assemblage, ‘when the exercises were brought toa close by te singing of the Doxclogy.
