Base Ingratitade. Before Jadge Bixby. George Lockwood was arraigned yesterday on a one brass galley and eight pounds of lead type, the | property of the World office. Lockwood has been and since he has been there several things have been missed. Early yesterday morning he was caught by one of the Compositors, named James Goiden, going out with the above property in his posses. sion. Officer Davis, of the Second precinct, was called in, and Lockwood was taken before Judge | Bixby. He acknowledged his guilt, and was held | in $1,000 ball to answer. | Larceny from the Person. | On the 7th of March John Smith, as alleged by Hattie Williams, stole a pocketbook from her and ; appropriated the contents, John Smith was ar- rested yesterday by Oflicer McGuire, of the court squad, aud held by Judge Bixby in $1,000 bail to He Would Be a Mormon. Yesterday morning the officer attached to the | Fall River line of steamers received a telegram | ordering the arrest of one Edward Slater, a youth of about nineteen years of age, who had run away from home and bad stolen $125 from his father. In the telegram a full description of the person wanted was given, and the officer scrutinized the passengers closely as they filed on the pier. He succeeded in arresting the right man, and a pocketbook containing $125 was found in his pos- session, The young cuiprit was taken before Judge Bixby yesterday afternoon. He said that | his mother was a Mormon and that he intended to | follow her to Salt Lake City. The Judge remanded | him to the care of his father, and sent nim back with the officer to Fall River. BROOKLYN COURTS. | ‘The suit of Mrs, Luella Saunders vs, Dr. H. S. Gilbert, to recover $30,000 damages for injuries alleged to have resulted from want of proper treate ment after childbirth, resulted yesterday in a disa- greement of the jury, This was the second trial On the first trial the jury also disagreed. The jury in the case of Mrs. Elizabeth Spicer vs. George Spicer, in which suit plaintiff sought to re- cover her dower out of the estate of Jonn Spicer, deceased, yesterday rendered @ verdict in favor of the plaintiff for $1,300. One of the strange tea- tures of this case was the appearance of plaintin’s first husband, Hugh Miller, to whom she was mar- ried twenty-five years ago, and whom she had thought long since dead, as she had neither seen | him nor heard anything irom him for years. The | being a trespasser. | question arises falls back upon the Seriptur | prejudice to deiendants, renewing same as they | | may be advised, | apostle, Court held that plaintiff! could not recover as John Spicer’s widow, but upon the promises of his brother, the defendant. Double Office-holding Not Allowed, Before Judge Gilbert. At the election held last fall Mr. Jacob Worth, @ City Assessor, was elected on the republican tickec to represent the Sixth district, Sixteenth and Nineteenth wards, in the State Assembly. His term of office as Assemblyman commencing Janu- ary 1, he attempted to act as Assessor also, but was ruled out on the ground that, under the char- ter, he could not hold two offices at the same time. Mr. Worth appealed to the Court for a mandamus to compel the Board of Assessors to admit him, ay dudge Gilbert rendered the following de- cision in the case:—°It was clearly in the power of the Legislature to prescribe the qualifications 7 poration. have a so in expheit terms, No Mcer can, during his term of Mice, hold any other public oMve except that of Commissioner of Deeds or Notary Public, and the holding of any such office vacates the city oMce, ‘The qualifying language of the statute relating to appoinments the jees or emoluments of which are paid out of the public treasury has no relation to permanent offices oi the cit. vernment, but appiles only to temporary appointments, The ob,ect of the Legis- lature is evident. It is based on sound public policy and should be applied. Th@ motion for a mandamus is denied, with $10 costs.” A Widow Suing for the Body of Her Late Husband. At a meeting of the Brooklyn Board of Assessors yesterday the Rey. Join H. Kirk presented a peti- tion asking for the usual exemption of $1,500 as- sessment on the assessed valuation on his house and jot in Ryerson street. He asked this on the ground that he was a minister of the Gospel in | good standing, though he foilowed another occu- pation, The assessed valuation of whe reverend | gentleman’s property was $2,400. Assessor Hennessey said that as the petitioner had another occupation he could not well claim ex- emption under tie law. Assessor McDiarmid, who, when @ perplexing said that according to tms decision St. Paul, the could not have been exempted. He preached the Gospel and also followed the occupa- tion of tinmaker. He did pot have auy taxes to pay. ; Assessor Hennessey—Do you know that of your own knowledge? Assessor McDiarmid—Oh, it’s a matter of his- tory. Assessor Hennessey—I think we had better get down to someting concerning Brooklya. The Chairman—It is a weli known tact that the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher 1s also engaged in an- other cating, that of edit.ng a newspaper. Assessor Hennessey—Mi. Beecher’s living, it is a well known tact, 1s aerived from his ministerial labors. The Chairman said he knew that the Rev. Mr. Kirk was a clergyman; but his salary was noc suilicient to support him, and he was compelied to do something else to make tt up. Assessor Furey said that he knew there were clergymen who were compelied to follow some other busmess in order to make a living, for tie reason that the congregations were too poor to support them. He moved that the matter be re- ferred to a committee of two, co couler with the Corporation Counsel in regard to tue same, The motion was carried, TAMMANY HALL, Meciing t.ast Nighc of the Committee on Organization—The Two New Wards Represented. ARTHUR ORTON IN NEWGATE. he Tichborne Claimant During His First Days of Convict L: {From the London Times, March 3.} Between nine and ten yesterday morning Alder- man Sir Robert Carden, while going the round of the jail of Newgate as one of the visiting magis- trates, accompanied by Mr. Jouas, the Governor, saw the convict Arthur Orton in his cell, which happens to be the same he occupied pre- vious to the trial of tue mdictment against him being removed by certiorari irom the Central Criminal Court to the Court oi Queena Bench. Sir Robert found Ortou engaged in pick- ing oakum in the cell, that being the accusiomed task to which every (reed sentenced to penal servitude is invariably subjected ailer conviction, preparatory to his removal to vis permanent place of confinement. The convict lor the present wears the clothes 1 which he appeared on his trial. This is contrary to all custom tn Newgate; but in this case, {rom sheer necessity, » departure lor once has been made irom the ordinary rule tor the reason that there 18 no convict dress in Newgate capable of being adapted to the convict’s leviathaa dimensions, Orton is said to bave been in very good spirits, all tnings considered, and to have entered freely, and of his own accord, into con. versation With the visiting magistrate, saying, im effect, among other things, that surely “the peo- ple of England” would never submi' to what le called the injustice which had been done him on his trial. Tne convict, on his arrival at Newgate on Saturday, having stated in answer to a routine question, among others, that he was a Roman Catholic, was excused attenuing the ordinary re- ligtous sérvices in the prison on sunday. Tn the ex. perience of the Governor tt is not unusual for per- Sous 01 the Roman Catholic persuasion, committed for trial, or after sentence, to attend the Protes- tant services in the jail chapel, trom a desire to relieve the dreary monotony, if for only half an hour or so, of prison lie; but Orton has not yet shown any such desire, Up to last night no one had seen the convict ex- cept Sir Rovert Carden, in his capacity of visiting magistrate, and the Governor, His solicitor is understood to bave made an application to see him in the course of yesterday, bot was not allowed. At present his ultimate destination on leaving Newgate is not known. THE JERSEY CITY MATRIOIDE. Freeman Convicted of Manslaughter—. Ten Years in the State Prison. The case of the State against Freeman for the murder of his mother in Jersey City was given to the jury yesterday at noon, Judge Bedle charged very minutely in relation to the theories advanced by the defence. The jury, after being out six hours, brought in a verdict of mansiaughter. The counsel for the defence were hight ee and they congratulated their chent that he escaped the gallows. The feeling among tnoge in the Court House was one of disappointment, The Court shared in this feeling, and no respite was allowed after the verdict was returned, Judge Bedle ad- dressed the prisoner briefly, and sentenced him to teu years at hard labor in the State Prigon, the fuit penalty prescribed by the law. .
