CONTESTED SEATS. ene terial and Assembly Commit- Priviteges and Elections— Pinckuey and Messer vs. The Senatorial Committee on Priviieges and Flections, appointed to investigate the case of William 8. Pinckney and itugh Moore, the candi- dates for the Senatorsinp in the Eightn District, at the recent election, met yesterday morning, at the Metropohtan Hotel. ‘ine committee consisted of Senators Cole, Tobey and Bradiey, Senator Cole presiding. Mr. Moore was declared electea at the close of tne election, and now occupies the seat ‘Which (a 2ontested by Mr. Pinckney. About thirty-nine witnesses were examined, in- cluding er clerks, iuspecturs and voters. George Bliss and John 1. Day ij oit appeared as counsel for Pinckney, and George W. Wiugute represented Moore, The examiuaiion yesterday was contined to the Nineteenth tiec wistrict, The testimony showed that the whole number of ‘Votes cast in tue election district Was 148, of which Dumber three were throws out. O1 the remainder Moore received 103, Piuckuey 18 aud McVattrey 17, It was endeavored by tie \ounsel tor Pinckney to show that irauds had been perpetrated by tue in- speotors, and that w larger number of votes had been been cust ior McCalirey and Pinckney, No important evidence on 11.8 point was, however, elicited, and alter getciu, through with the wit- nesses present the comuit'ce wruered that sub- poenas shoud be issued wr au additional number, @nd adjourned uutil Monday next. MESSER VS. SCHERMAN. The Assembly Committee ou vontested Seats met Yesterday morning at the Metrupu.itan Hotel to Consider charges agalust the inspectors of Elec- tion in the bighth Asseuvly district, in which Jacob Messer claims the seat of George Scherman, @lected to the Assembiy au tut district. William Snyder, of No. 119 Cunton street, testified that he ‘Was a “watcher” for Messer on eiectiun day in the Ninth district; that ne was refused permission to go behind the railings by the 1uspectors, who said there was no room; that ii@ saw twenty-two bal- Jots put on Messer’s file, but he was only credited With sixteen wuen te votes were counted; that William Douglas, a Jammany “watcher,” had at- tempted to 1orce his way in, but was arrested and locked up. Mr. Nigbutorche, of No. U7 Ludlow street, also testified that he was a ‘‘watcher” in the sixth Klection district; saw numbers of Messer’s bailots ou Scherman’s file and aust tae, and uiter that noted number of Messer’s Dallocs not counted. ihvodure F. Kulile, of No. 193 Stanton street, was also a “watcher” in the Twen- tieth Eleciion district; he knew nothing of any consequence. Then ioiowed Kudoiph Heilmann, of No. 9 Chrystie strect, and Frederick Binger, of No. 40 Ludlow street, but (they tell into the old groove of their predecessors. and did not prove thing. a (3 this juncture Messer’s counsel called for an adjournment oi the case until Friday evening Dext, at eight o’ciock, with Messer’s privilege Of submitting an appeal to the committee as to his right of addicionat ‘estimony. Should the com- mittee decide that Messer has this ruht, Scher- anan's deience Wil be deierred until the loliowing day. CORONERS’ CASES. a “He Fell from the Ladder.” James Ingersoll, a laboring man, fell from a laa- derin Pike street yesteruay afternoon and was ‘Anstantly killed, His body was taken to the Morgue, and Uoroner Wol.man Will hoid an inquest to-morrow. Sadden Deaths, William Johnston, @ Spaniard, residing at No. 376 Water street, died suduenly early yesterday morning under suspicious circumstances, He was in apparent health previous to yesterday morning, and Was 10 bave been a witness in an important case in the Special sessions. Coroner kessier will lvld an inquest at the Morgue to-morrow. John Blessing, an old German, aged fifty, died at No. 6044 Hirst street, yesterday, from some un- known malady with whicn he had been attlicted for weeks past. Corouer Eickhot® hus granted a pad toremove the ;eimains to the Morgue, where Will hold an inquest. Probable Murder. Aman named Miciael Meighan, who resides at No, 154 Leonard strvet, has been reported by the doctors to be in a dangerous condition, owing toa eco scalp wound he received on February 1. rom the statements made it seems that Meighan, while in company with one Owen Mahan, became involved in a mélée, during the progresa of whicu he was wounded. Meighan, ‘when taken home, reiused to say anything as to how he received his iujury. Some ot his irienas thave caused the arrest of Manan, who is now focked up in the Sixth precinct station house. The Fatal Sleighing Frolic. Coroner Woltman yesterday went to Yorkville to take the aute-mortem deposition of George Leggi, who was stabbed during a fight which oc- curred st Conrad’s Hotel, 155th street and Grand Boulevard, a jew nights since, Tne case was re- cet at length im the HERALD at the time. artin Brown, John Reuly, Bob Mills and Charies Cavanugh are now under arrest as accessories to wes injuries of young Legyi, who is not expected to live. GAME LAWS. The New York Association for the Protection of Game again reminds the market men and aealers generally that the closed season for the sale of quail, partridges and prairie chickens will com- mence on the first of Marcn next, after which, and antil the open season again (Uctober 20 tor quail, and September 1 for partridges and prairie chick- ens) the penalty for each bird had in possession is $25, and the law will be strictly enforced. New Youk, Feb. 14, 1874. PRILADELPHIA AND THE SIAMESE TWINS, To THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD:— Will you kindly iniorm we why the neighboring village of Philadeipiia is so convulsed by the pros- pect of an autopsy of tue Sia:nese wins. Is it not evidence that a medical pot so soon hot is, if com- pared with the gigantic New York caldron, small calibre ? The Siamese Twins actually possess no more strictly physivlogical interest than the double kit- tens and douvie calves, which are the classical Btaple of the country papeis; in fact, much less than many douvle monstrosities of the human family, especially the united muiatto girls, to Whom your journal has aliuded, and whose union is much more extendea and remarkable. ‘Tie band between the twins isa mere cord in com- Parison. The human Interest originally attaching to the jolly and handsome little vrientai children twins, joined in partnership ior lie, Was not unnatural at the time they were exuibiled, some torty years ago, when science was youuger and the pubic more disposed to ga,e and be astonished, The commercial exmipiting house of Chang and En, ‘Was the flrat to occupy tne ground, the “original ae ee but later tne interest grew ‘The question of the propriety of separating | them, by a single cut of the knife, atthe cartilage function, was oi course mooted by the doctors, vid the abdominal cavity, or probavly the thoracic cavity, was prolonged through tie band by a little canal, division might produce inflammation and be dangerous; thougi not more sv than operations on the abdomen oiten done with success. If it Were not 80 peomnaed it Would not be dangerous. Nobody could feel or see whether it was or not, and that was the whole o1 it. But physiological science is not advanced the value of a straw by learuing whether the band is solid or has a hole through it, or how many biood Vessels there are, Sette the question of hole or no hole and even the curiosity is over. The curi- -osity is chiefly of a popular nature and very vague, The Siamese Twins were not cut in two-because they were commerciaily worth more tied together. Bat nobody doubts that they were two perfect beings, yoked like cattie, and, us said ore, scientific people now really care little whether there was or not a small canal through the acci- dental yoke of breastuone and flesh, The oddest “scientific” suggestion (and which emanated from Philadelpuia) was upon the im- portance of learning what tle little nand was, in order that science might know what to advise in similar cases! Let the public be prepared to flatten themselves Against the wall, to ‘‘etface themselves,” as the Frenchmen say, when the forthcoming mysterious official annouacement is made. They are rather re- markabie for big words in Philadelphia, and our good friends, the doctors there, seem to be labor: tng under an unusual head oi steam, MEDICUS. MATRIMONIAL.
