NEW YORK HERALD, FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL A Dull and Unsuggestive Day in the Stock Market, GLOOM AMONG THE BROKERS. No Change in the Monetary Situation— Offerings Abundant and Cheap. RAILROAD BONDS FIRM. Gold and Government Se- curities Strong. WALL STREET, MonpDay, Feb. 2—6 P, 4 ‘The market was so dull to-day that it communt- ated its depressing influences to the entire street. The trading was of a purely local character, con- ined to brokers and mainly limited to the quick ehamges of an }s a 44 or 3g percent. The notable ‘@dvance was in C. C., C. and I, which moved irom 1% to 83%, and in Delaware, Lackawanna and wéstern, which improved 2 per cent, or from 105 to 107, Increased dealings were also evident in North Western common, which advanced from 68% to 5934. Otherwise the market was alternately firm and fluctuating. The low Priced shares showed considerable activity, and, in some cases, an advance. Erte declined from 50% to 49 Western Union receded from 163 to 175%. Atlantic and Pacific ‘Telegraph moved from 163s to 1934, but closed at 18%. Union Pacific rangea from 3474 to 354%. The ordinary speculative stocks, such as Lake Shore, ‘New York Central and Rock Island, were compara- tively quiet, Wabash declined from 53% to 52%, St. Louis and Iron Mountain went from 69}, to 71. ©., O. and I. C. was steady and strong at 31% a 3133. Ohio and Mississippi varied but a tride trom 34% a 843g. Harlem was steady at 124%. St. Paul the same at 46% a 465; 2 46%, It 18 now fairly under- stood that the Milwaukee and St, Paul Railroad ; Company have declared a 7 per cent dividend; but it is payable in consolidated bonds, The books will probably close about the 16th of February, and the dividend be paid about the 1st of Marcn. ‘Whether the bonds thus consolidated represent gold or @urrency we are not informed. it is a question that may depend on the vote of the stock- holders. MONEY, In the money market prime mercantile paper is {nm small supply and the rate on the same is quoted pt Gand 8percent, Money was abundant at 4 and 5 per cent, and more is in search of call loans than fan be invested. Foreign exchange was dull to the close of the day. Actual business from second hands was at 4833; for prime banker's 60 days sterling, 486)4 a 487 for demand. Goup sbowed unusual firmness to-day by maintaining Itself at 1113 a 111%, throughout the market. It slosed at 111%. The carrying rates were 4, 44, 5 and 6 per cept, and for borrowing, flat. The day’s business at the Gold Exchange Bank was as fol- lows:— Gold cleared. The “HERALD Almanac’’ is now @ recognized auxiliary to the banker, the broker, to the gold and note discoun- ter, and @ work of reference on ‘Change that can- not be dispensed with, The present issue nas been prepared with care and with an eye to compre- hensiveness and accuracy in its money tables, bank statistics, tn its daily quotations of gold and government bonds for every day in the year; in its daily quotations in American railroad stocks for 1878; daly quotations in American securities in the London market, and daily quotations of cotton in the New York market ‘or 1873, that assures for it popularity and @ recognized authority in this special branch of its varied departments of tnfor- mation. Its published title of “HeRaLD Almanac and Financial, Commercial and Political Register” barely describes the scope of the well selected, re- liable and interesting information contained tn tts pages. There 1s, | therefore, at present u fair “prospect lor a balance of $2,000 in Javor of the public against the thief. I | now respectiully ask for anthority to pay to Mr. Cottrell, the innocent holder of ‘the $1,000 Park bond, and to Mr. Braisted, the innocent holder of | two $1,000 Boulevard bonds, the amounts repre- | sented by the bonds held by them, said amounts to be charged to the surplus balances remaining un- expended on account of the appropriation of 1873, Ihave pledged myself to these parties to see them harmless, and I believe the city cannot afford to refuge payment if we desire to maintain our credit in the financial world, Alderman Brown moved the reterence of the matter to the Finance Committee, and he re- marked that the report was “very thin.” The Comptroller was too tenacious of mentioning the name of the person who presented the coupons at the Nassau Bank. The man’s name is “Frank,’* and he procured the appointinent of the abdscond- ing clerk, Kessler, in Mr. Schroeder's office. He peer action should be instituted aguinst Mr. rank. After some debate the report was relerred to the Finance Committee. THE POTTERS FIELD. In connection with the investigation which wilt take place into the manner of burial of Grand Master French in the Potters Field, Alderman Gillon, of the committee, nas received a letter from T. M. Taylor, of No. 163 Bowery, mentioning tnat the coming investigation gave lum satisfaction in view ofthe fact that his brother-in-law, Mr. Samuel Ward, having acquired a habit of drinking too freely, Was arrested on one of his sprees, commit- ted to the Workhouse on Blackwell's Island, takem sick, transferred to the Charity Hospital, died and was taken to Potters rield and buried; and during all this time no effort had been made to find the address of his family or friends, and they were ignorant of his fate for some time, but finally, by accident, it was discovered where the remains were im- terred; and, aiter considerable trouble they suc- ceeded in obtaining the body, but in such a state of decomposition that recognition was impossible; that the evidence that it was his body was the “tag” nailed on the pine box in which he was buried; that ifthe authorities of the Charity Hos pital had taken the trouble they would have ascer+ tained the residence of his wife, and have noti- fled ter before his death; but he was leit to die alone, without a friend, and was ignominiously buried im a pauper’s grave. fae A CHAPTER OF ACCIDENTS.
