RAPID TRANSIT. <roup FROM EIGHTH PAGE, cet, or by i! is to a block on each side of the Bridge: "A a seer ard rail of heavy timber on the ide Of each rail, firmly secured, will prevent he wheels from jeaving the track and thus the aber: be made safe, The advantages of this sys- pe ee proposed are— comparative cheapness. It can be Pha at about one-sixth of the cost of any pf the underground roads, and, as a consequence, & borrespon dint low tare will be secured, Second—Facility of construction, It may be Muilt in one-fiith the time rear: ured for the other echemes, as this plan will not be subject to the un- certainties and vexatious ay from water, rock, waterpipes, gaspipes, vaults, &c., unavoidable in ‘the construction of undergrouna roads. Third—Greater comfort to passengers, in the enjoyment of much better air and light than can bly be had in any underground system. Fourth—Saiety. The shortness of the spans secure a stiff, strong structure, which is more diffi- cult to obtain where the posts or supports are placed on the curbline; also, the whole upper Toadway being enclosed’ and watertight, nothing can drop to incommode or injure persons below, ‘hia t# one of the main features of the system. An elevated road not so guarded is extremely danger- ous for persons passing beneath. i—Another advantage in this system over the plan of pee the posts at tne curb line is in securing alighter appearance and an open, unob- structed space of forty feet between the building line and roadway, thus rendering it Jess objection- able to occupants of buildings along the line. It 1s Proposed to petition the Legisiature to empower the present railroad companies whose lines run on our m@in avenues to build this elevated ratiwa: above their present surface roads. The great ad- vantages of this system commend it to the faver of our citizens, who are requested to use their in- fluence in obtaining the action of the Legislature requisite for a realization of this most important Project. Yours respectiully, R.G. HATFIELD, THE SUNDAY LAW QUESTION, Special Meeting of the German Republi- can Central Committee on the Sub- Ject—Action in Reference to the Emi- gration Commissioners. The German Republican Central Committee held & special meeting at its hall, No. 349 Bowery, last night, which had been called by Dr. Muhr, the President, for tre purpose, as he stated, of taxing into immediate consideration two important ques- tions now agitating the public mind in this city, and to make application on the sub- ject to the Legislature. He referred to the renewed attempts on the part of the police au- thorities to enforce an antiquated law known as the Sunday law, and to certain nativistic tenden cles and measures On the part of the Commission- era of Emigration. Resolutions were introduced declaring that the State Legislature shail be called COOH Ss SRBGE @ modification of the Sunday law; at & committee shall be appointed to confer without delay with our representa- tives in the Legislature on the subject, with a view o¢ devising ways and means to insure edy ehactment providing lor a repeal or ification of the Sunday clause. ‘Lhe resolution whe adopted by a unanimous vote. A resolution was also passed by 2 unanimous vote calling upon the Legislature for an enact- ment providing that the presidents of the German and Irish emigrant societies 01 this city, as mem- bers of the Board of Emigration, shail be clothed with full powers, equal with the other members, conferring upon them the right to vote upon all questions arising before the Board for action. lt was further resolved that this matter be referred to the same com- mittee to take further action in the Imatter and to carry Out the measures proposed. The committee was composed of Dr. Louis Nau- mann, Carl Schwedler, Frederick Klein, A, Ditten- hoefer and William Gellmann, In the course of the debate on the subject it was argued that the presidents of the Inmsn and German emigrant societies are best fitted to guard FINANCIAL AND COMMERCTAL A Dull and Uninteresting Wail Street Situation.
