PINANGIE AND COMMERCIAL PROSPECTS FOR 1874, The Condition of Trade and Its Promises. WARNINGS FOR THE WEAK. Bears on the Rampage in the Stock Market. DECLINE AND RECOVERY. Gold and Rail- way Bonds. Mone y> WALL Street, } Monpay, Jan. 19—8 P, M. Commerciat prospects ior the year 1874 at the Present moment certainly appear encouraging. While on the one band we view the lamentabie~ spectacle of thousands uf workingmen out of em- ployment—in itself a sign of the terrible financial struggle through wilich the country has passed— on the other hand we have reports from the agri- cultural and manufacturing centres, from the prod- uce, cotton, dry goods and other departments of trade, whicn Justify the expectation that before the end of the year, unless there be another mad rugh of credits, restoration will be complete. The meanfacture of textile fabrics is progressing favor- -ably. Cotton factories are again running at a profit. The sarplus of corn, wheat, barley, pork ahd other products is reported to be large, and the demand from abroad, wiile conservative, is steady and equal to the ability to move the crop by rail and ship. The consumptive demand at home, however, is not on its old basis. Money has been concentrated and locked up. There is less of indulgence in luxuries. Economy is rather the rule. The pur- chasing power of the country has been reduced, and the sacrifices compelled by the panic on the part of tradesmen, whose clef aim was to maintain per- sonal credit at any cost, are not yet compensated. Hence in retail life there is stilt more or less of in- activity. Taking, however, a comprehensive view of the whole situation—linancial strength as illus- trated by our banking institutions, a never failing barometer; agricultural strength as shown by our immense crops, and productive power as ex- hibited in our manuiactories and concurrent in- dustries—it is difficult to reatize that THE RESOURCES OF THE COUNTRY &re not rapidly recovering their natural impetus, or teat, the results are not being gradually writien on every chart that descrives our national prog- ress, - Doubtless there are DANGERS TO BE AVOIDED. Chief among these is the tendency to inflation, not merely of currency, but of business, As legal ten- ders lose their value oy reason of their volume, men may well be tempted to indulge in what seems to be extraordinary chances to enlarge* their operations, Ease of money naturally invites specu- lnuon, yet the very ability to obtain credit may be the rock on which ambition will become a wreck. The public treasury is none too strong to 1orbid an- ticipatious of disaster. It is in the power of a lew capitalists even now to make such combinations as might convulse the markets of the country. The foundation is by no means safe, and until its sup- ports have been fairly secured that business man is imprudent who attempts work ona high pres- sure principle, and by extending his lines of credits around him counts mere promises to pay asa part of his legitimate profits. THE MONEY MARKET ‘was without change, being easy, and showing the slight range of from but 5 to6 per cent, Commer- cial paper is still called for at 7 and 8 per cent. In fact, dealers complain that there is not enough of the prime quality. Foreign exchange was steady at $483 a $4 8344 for prime bankers’ sixty davs sterling, $4 8634 a $4873 for demand and $4 87}, tor cable transfers, THE GOLD MARKET. Prices remain comparatively firm, and the gen- eral condition is unattected by reports from Wash- ington or elsewhere. It is evident that this de- partment of the street is awaiting the movement of a leader, Gold sold at 111% a 111% a 111, and @osed at 111%. The present status is one of the idiosyncracies of speculation. OPERATIONS OF THE GOLD EXCHANGE BANK TO-DA’ Gold balances... 1,37 Currency valances. Gross clearances, OLEARING HOUSE STATEMENT.
