8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIA A BUOYANT MARKET. Stocks Advancing Steadily, with Still Further Improvement Probable, THE BANK STATEMENT. A Large Increase Over the Reserve. MONEBY EASY. Gold Moving Upward---It Gains One Per Cent To-Day. GOVERNMENT BONDS FIRM. WALL STREET, SatTurpay, Jan. 3—6 P. vw} ‘The strong influences that have recently been at ‘Work upon tue stock market tn no wise abated to- @ay. Buoyancy appeared to be the order of the our, and almost without exception stocks obeyed ‘the undertone and advanced. A marked improve- Ment was observable, especially in the Western vailway shares, and there were periods in the course of business that showed not a little excite- ment. There is no ‘short’? interest worthy of Mention, but, on the contrary, a disposition to swell the array of bulls and press prices much higher. Several per cent profit are yet counted upon, and the coming week will doubtless be full of pecaniary interest. The excellence of the bank statement, 28 regarded by the street, produced a decided effect upon the confidence of operators, and to it may be attributed somewhat of the activity of the day, Which will be best understood by scanning the Jong official list of sales which follows this article, MONEY ‘was easy at 7 per cent on call in the early hours, Dut subsequently declined to 4 percent. Discounts Tange from 7 to 10 per cent. The outstanding loan certificates amount to only $970,000. 2 THE BANK STATEMENT RK the week continues to exhibit great strength on ae part of the yayious jnstitutions, and in a measure explains the buoyancy and good teeling | existing in the stock market. It wil) be observed that the increase in specie was $4,881,000, The Une of deposits has creased $10,247,400, and legal vtenders $1,794,100. The increase in logns was $3,040,000. Thé tétal Mabilities are $253,000,000, and the excess over the legal reserve of 25 per ‘vent is $16,707,250—a gain of $4,106,000 since the Jast statement, The jollowing is a comparison of “ “the averages of the past two weeks ;— See Digerences. A few days ago two boys, of the street Arab order, picked up from the dirt in the gutter in Wail street @ little piece of curled and crnshed white paper. In it they saw two pieces of shining substance, and one of them excluimed to the otner, “They’d make bully jackstones if we had three more!” A Wall street broker who, like many of his profession, knows something about precious stones, saw at once that these were diamonds. He sail to them, “Boys, there’s a re- ward oxered for those.” These boys were of the same cast of mind as the boy whum Scrooge, in the “Christmas Carol,” wanted to go and buy the prize turkey, and, there.ore, one of them said, “This ain't April fool day.” The broker was @reader of the HERALD, and he had read in the special notices our days ago that the firm of Smith Hedges, of Maiden lane, had lost these dia- monds, or rather some one who had them with him to sell for them had lost them. They were said to be worth $3,500, and they offered $500 re- ward. The boys, though still undelieving as to the reward, accompanied the gentieman to Smith & Heuges’, and when Mr. Hedges was introduced to the boys by the broker one of them said, “Er you the snoozéer what wants to give something for find- ing these ’ere things?” The firm were astonished and delighted at the sight of what they supposed to be their lost diamonds, and overlooked the “slang? of the boy and assured him that they would reward him. The boy gave his name as William Curtis, living in DuMeld street, Brooklyn, and the next day a check lor $500 was given to his parents for him as a reward for the re- covery of the property. Despite the matnerism and the story of the boys, they are said to be industzious and steady, and the $500 is not unlikely, under the direction of the broker, Who was fortunate enough - Ck ia them, to give them @ good start in lite. ee MARRIAGES AND DEATHS.
