Whe Court of Pardons Refuse to Com. mute the Death Sentence—The Prisoner To Be Exccuted on the 9th of January. A special session of the New Jersey Court of Par- fions was held yesterday at Trenton to consider ‘the case of Mechella, the murderer. The Court listened patiently to the petition of the prisoner's counsel and the report of the physicians who held @ consultation regarding tne sanity of the prisoner. 4 discussion of two hours took place, in which all ‘the fanci{ul suppositions and theories regarding the prisoner’s mental condition were con- sidered. Every member of the Court who spoke on the question declared his conviction ‘that the prisoner was perfectly sane, no convinc- log evidence to the contrary having been pre- sented. A vote was taken, and the Court, bya unanimous vote, refused to commute the sentence ofdeath. Secretary of State Kelsey transmitted the decision of the Court to Sheriff Reinhardt, and &t the same time the death warrant was issued by Governor Parker. Mechella will be hanged next ‘Friday week, the 9th of January. The gallows on , Which Foster, Nixon, Real, Jerry O’Brien, Friery, Wagner and others expiated their lives within the fombs will be taken ever next week and erected in the “ete at the rear of the Hudson County Jail. ‘The prisoner was not apprised of tie decision of , ‘the Court last evening. ere is no change in his * demeanor, and he proves at times more trouble- Bome to his keepers than before the reprieve. was atenton: The Deputy Sheriff in charge states that 88 80on as Mechella understands that the authori- are in earnest and the law must be en/orced, will at once ‘‘beud before the storm” and pre- for his doom, No person will be allowed to ‘(mmunicate with him except by a special order the Sheriff. THE PAR OF EXCHANGE. ee Ry healer atl The New Arrangement Between the English and American Markets. WALL STREET, } ‘TouRaDAY, Dec. 30—6 P. M. Nothing occurred in the street to-day to elicit comment. Prices are generally anchanged, and there is little disposition even on the part of the principal operators to take any steps that shall provoke speculation until after New Year’s. Nota few “points” are drifting about, second and third hand, concerning this stock and the other, but as long as the leading cards are held by the men whose millions have made the market, and who can as easily break it, there is little use in pre- dicting for the immediate {uture. Wall street always succumbs to a money bag, ond he who is the most plethoric is for the time being the king of the situation, At the present moment there are no natural influences at work. in other words, there are more “guesses” than facts—more sub- terfuges than truths. Nor shall we have asettied basis until after the meeting of Congress. It is but fair to add that “balloons” are in high favor. THE STOCK MARKET. Western Union sold at 72% a 7234 a 725 a 72% & 13 & 73% & 7334 a 73%. Pacific Mall opened at 37%, sold up to 38%¢ 4 387, and closed at 88%. St. Paul fluctuated between 413; 841%. Lake Shore was firm at 763; a 7644 a 76% a 763g. New York Central Bold at 9854 a 09 a 99%. Bets were freely made tnat this stock would go to par before the 1st of January. Union Pacific was steady between 30% a 3034. Ohio and Mississippi sold at 30% @ 30 a 30% a 8054 &@ 3034. Northwest common moved from 56% to 5744, and retamed its strength at the close at 57. ‘The preferred stock closed at 69, Wabash moved from 48% to 49%, closing at 49%. Rock Island Opened at 99% and went to par, the lesser price being 995%. C., C. and I. C. vibrated between 27 a 27%. Hannibal and St. Joseph was steady at 273¢ 2734. Boston, Hartford and Erie sold up to 33%. Harlem was quoted at 120, Panama, b. 3, closed at 109. Alton and Terre Haute common reached 16, Atlantic and Pacific, 1234. THE FOREIGN MARKET. Late London reports by cable indicate an un- changed market. We quote:—United States five- twenty bonds, 1865's, old, 106; 1867, 1063g; ten- forty bonds, 103% ; new fives, 1033; Erie Railway shareg, 4134 a 41%. The above prices are based on the néw method of reckoning the American dollar. By this American funds are quoted at the rate of 4s, per dollar; not 4s. 6d., as heretofore. Paris de- Spatches quote rentes at 58f. 37c. In Frankiort United States five-twenties are 97% for the issue of 1862. The new method of quoting sterling ex. change, which goes into effect with the new year, 1s in pursuance of an act of Congress of March 3, 1873, which provides that ‘all contracts made after January 1, 1874, based on an assumed par of ex- change with Great Britain of $4 44 49 to vhe sovereign, or pound sterling, shall be null and void.” On the passage of this act the feading drawers of sterling here agreed to quote the pound sterling at its actual price in American dollars; thos, imstead of saying to-day that sterling is 108% and 10934, it would be quoted at $4 84 and $4 88 gold, respectively. The new par of sterling exchange is expressed by the figures $4 86 65-100 for the pound sterling, which is practically the Mint par. In view of these changes the London Stock Exchange have adopted for stock quotations four shillings per dollar, whichis five dollars to the pound sterling. The following specimen shows the method of quoting the value of the pound sterling under the new method, asin contradistinction to the equivalent rates under the present method :— New Present New Present Method. THE MONEY MARKET was active in the latter part of the day and rates ranged from 7 per cent currency to 1-64 per cent per diem. Prime discounts are still quoted at from 7 to 10 per cent. Foreign exchange closed dull at 108% a 108% for prime bankers’ 60 days sterling and 109% for demand. The loan certi- ficates in the banks have been decreased by the sum of $435,000, and now stand at $1,385,000. The total exports of produce from this port, for the week ending to-day, amounted to $6,075,750, mixed values. THE UNITED STATES TREASURY. The customs receipts to-day were $256,000. The receipts from internal revenue amounted to $284,147, The Assistant Treasurer paid out to-day $1,790,000 on account of January interest, $496,000 for currency interest and $79,000 in redemption of 5-20 bonds. The amount paid out on account of January interest thus far to-day is $1,200,000, making @ total of $4,640,000. The balances in the United States Treasury to-day, at the close of business, were:—Currency, $429,000; decrease since yesterday, $1,271,000; coin, $89,666,000; certi- ficates, $83,000,000; outstanding legal tenders, $76,244,000; decrease since yesterday, $1,448,000, The decrease im currency balance and the revenue receipts accounts for reduction in out- standing legals. The public debt statemen®will be issued on the 2d of January. Itis thought at the Treasury Department that the increase will be somewhat less than that of last month. From the present indications 1t will be about $8,000,000. This con- neccion will prove a very great convenience to Southern travellers and shippers, and of great ad- vantage to the St. Louis, Alton and Terre Haute Railroad, as it will largely increase their trafic. The bridge over the Missi gon at St. Louis will soon be completed, which will enable the St. Louis, Alton and Terre Haute to prove a formidable com- petitor for Southern traffic, and placing its stock among dividend-paying shares, Messrs. morton, Bliss & Co, wil pay, as usual, January 2, the interest on the Union Pacific first mortgage gold bonds, the principal of which is over $27,000,000.
