Jett Now ork onthe + Galitornia, arriv THE COURTS. IRVING. JOHN T. The Self-Confessed Accomplice in the Nathan Murder Oome to Grief— His Conviction of Burglary. "BUSINESS IN THE OTHER COURTS. ‘As will be seen by the report below John T, Irving, the author of the sensational confession as to the Nathan murder, was yesterday tried in the Court of General Seasions on one of the old burglary indictments that has teen so long hanging over him. He was found guilty and remanded for sentence. Harry Genet made his appearance yesterday in tho Court of Oyer and Terminer with his counsel in the ex- “pectation that his cage would be ordered on trial. It ‘was postponed, however, but no time fixed for the trial to take place, ‘The prevailing rumor is that the District Attornoy is waiting the return of Judge Davis to the bench ofthis Court before bringing to trial any of the Ring cases. In the matter of G. B. Grinnell 4 Co. and George Bird Grinnell, alleged bankrupts, Register Allen, to whom the proceedings had been referred, has revorted to Judge Blatchford, in the United States District Court, that in his judgment the case ought to be discontinued; and the Judge has now granted an order coinciding with the tion of the Register, and directing that it be car- ried into effect. Mr, A. H. Purdy, United States Assistant District At- torney for this district, will proceed to Washington im- mediately for the purpose of arguing before the Supreme Gourt,on behalf of the government, in the case of Edward Lange, who was recently convicted in the United States Circuit Court, before Judge Benedict, ot misappropriating a quantity of mail bags, and sentenced to® year's imprisonment and a fine. The matter has «gone to the Supreme Court on habeas corpus, counsel for the prisoner contending that the sentence was illegal, as it included fine and imprisonment, contrary to the terms ot the statute. Rosa McCabe, otherwise known as “Sister Mary of Stanislaus,” has been discharged trom the Lunatic Asy- lum on Blackweil’s Island, Mr, John D. Townsend, hor counsel, having laid the facts of the case before the Archbishop of Halifax, and failing to get a response, now ‘proposes to carry the matter to the Church at Rome. JOHN T. IRVING. ‘Trial of the Self-Confessed Accomplice in the Nathan Murder for Burglary—He 4s Convicted and Remanded for Sen- tence—Another Indictment Hanging Over Him. Tn the Court of General Sessions, Recorder Hackett on the bencn, John T, Irving, who has sought to escape the @enalty of lesser crimes through confessing himself an accomplice in the murder of Benjamin Nathan, and his ability to explain away the mystery enveloping this terrible tragedy, was yesterday placed on trial upon an indictment for burglary in the third degree. There was no delay in procuring a jury, but just betore they were sworn Mr. William F. Howe, who defended Irving, said that he sincerely believed he was ready for trial, but he just discovered that the indictment upon which the prosecuting officer was going to try the prisoner was for an ai offence committed in this city on the Ist of June, I The counsel came prepared to defend the accused upon an old indictment, Lae was rea = pro- Sut in regard to the pariicular case beiore the Court the prisoner could make an affidavit that) ne ree in custody in California at che ime he. is said to hi been perpetrating a burglary in New York.
