Another Point Blank Refusal of “Boss” Dawes to Allow His Books To Be Examined—A Mandamus Yo Bo Procured. authority given the Citizens’ Expert Committee of the Newark Committee 0! One Hundred, another one, fully meeting the spirit and letter of the law, was procured from Mayor Ricord positively requir- ing the city ofMicials to open their records tothe citizen investigators, Yesterday, armed’ with this, Messrs. Scbnelibacher, Dilion and Kubn, a ma- jority of the Expert Committee, accompanied by Mr, James Courter, chairman of the Commitice of One Hundred, again visited the City Hall and again called upon City Auditor Dawes. Mr, Courter pre- sented the Mayor's full and explicit letter of au. thority, clothing the three experis named above with full power to examine the records of his and otber departments of the city, The “Buss” read the document, and once more DEFIED THE MAYOR'S AUTHORITY by refusing to allow the committee to examine his papers, books, &c, The plea he offered tor his con- tumacy was the same as belore—personal objec- tion to Mr. Dillon, the leading financial investigator, He was quite willing, he said, that the other members of the committee might examine his records in the course of some days, uiter he had finished up some balance work he was now doing. The committee beld to their lormer position that, uu as aunit to go on with the examination, it could not and woud not. p! ed. Tae “Bos Heged objection to Mr. Dillon is, that in the report the jatter prepared, which report was unanimously approvea ol by the Committee of One Hundred, he distorted certain facts, The “Boss” says le has the proo! of this, but thus far has allowed six or seven weeks to Intervene without making, or causing to be made, any corr-ction of the ulleged distortions, THE REAL CAUSE OF ONJECTION, aceording to universal belief in Newark, Dawes ts atraid of Mr. Dillon's marveiio: jor Jerretting out ugly discrepancies. r. Dillon is the only member of the smumuttee who has ample leisure as well as ability to pursue the myestigation jully. ihe objection to him, on the ground ‘of 1n- troducing distortions in his report, is laughed out of Court entirely, for the simple reason that Mr. Dillon merely prepared the reports and was respousibie for them oniy as a member of the com- mittee, He is not even chairman of the Expert Committee or the Auditor's sub-commitice. If, therefore, there were any “distortion” in them Mr, Schnetloacher is the most responsible, belong cuair- man, But to bum, SINGULARLY AND SIGNIFICANTLY, “Ross"’ Dawes makes no objection, but, on the iga The pecial Committee appointed at the lasi meeting to pnsuit counsel in regard to taking legal steps for the procucement Of @ mandamus irom the supreme Court to compel the throwing open of tne books will report at the meeting to-morrow evening, When itis expected tuat some starving reports will be made regarding the Schoot tund. Brennan Indicted for Murder in the First Degree. No sooner had the Coroner's jury at Highbridge concluded the inquest on the body of Catharine Brennan than her husband was taken off and lodged in the Hunterdon County Jailat Flemington, where the Patenburg rioters created such a sensa tion last year. The Grand Jury took the case at once into consideration, and on Friday evening they found an indictment of murder in the first degree against Brennan. District Attorney Chamberlain | will Move the trial week alter next. Owing to tie | magnitude of the case he hus concluded to call on | the Attorney General to assist in the prosecution. Brennan's iriends have retained Mr. Voorlices, of | Flemington, and Mercer Beasiey, Jr., of Irenton, for the defence. The evidence against the prisoner is accumulating since the inquest. Hunterdon county is establishing a reputation tor itself, A MISSING MAN FOUND DROWNED, Newrort, R. 1, Dec. 6, 1873. The body of Mr. George H. Gifford, merchant, of this city, Was found to-day in a pond near the rail- road depot, at Fall River, No foul play was maoi- fest, as his money, watch and other valuables were found upon his person, and a coroner's jury returned a verdict of accidental drowlag. He had been missing from his home since Mon- day, the 256h ult., at which time he proceeded to Fall River to draw some money he had on deposit at one of the Fall River savings banks. The wild- est stories were aflont as to lus probable Jate, and it was generaily believed that he had been mur- dered and aiterwards robbed. Both this city and Fall River were excited, and accordingly took meusures to ferret out the mystery, with the above result, It is supposed that he tell througn the bridge, the planks being removed on account of the city having it repaired, and he was tound um derneath it, A iawsuit will probably be brought against the city by his family jor damayes, as there was uo watchman or light to warn travellers of the danger. &N ITALIAN CHEAT.
