To Tuy Epiror or THE HERALD: We are happy to learn that the charitable pub- lic on the other side of the river have contributed wo generously to the Nast (T)- fund, whom we sincerely sympathize with, but, being poor marines and pay-day far distant, we are unable to offer anything more substantial than our heartfelt sympathy. should Mr, Nast ever be compelled, through want or otherwise, to seek a position in the service we would recommend that he enlist In the marine corps. Another inconven- jence 1s that he will be required to assemble, fall in ranks and be inspected for dinner, lasting about fifteen minutes—the generous meal fur- nished by Uncle Sam getting cold in the mean- time, When he is marched into dinner he must not expect to find everything ready. He sits down to the dirty table and beiore him is set a small wate of very tough becf and a small plece of bread, Well, he may {cel thirsty, but he mustn’t grumble, for the commanding officer thinks that thirty bowls are suMicient for 300 men; consequentiy he eats nis meal without drinking anything, or is compelled to wait half an hour or so until the bowls are Washed. But such little inconveniences Mr. Nast must expect if he enters the service—at least the branch called (Horse) Marines.
