8 THE MONETARY SITUATION. | yin Facts Out- a SMxamination of Yesterd ee riehs side of the moeest Settlements Reported. Yesterday was a blue day on Wall street, nape @espite the many returning encouraging signs in Bhe general outlook, te growing confidence was ‘everborne for the time by the sopetisicn of rue mors, both st home and abroad, 1p respect to in- ‘eidents of the present financial situation, First ment in respect to the etairs of the eae Manufacturing Company, in which the indebtedmess of the company was presented as $14,000,000, with assets only Of $7,000,000, Later information supplied the correction that these figures had been misplaced in the first qatement, the debts being $7,000,000 and the assets $14,000,000 or over; Bubsequentiy put at $11,000,000 surplus. It was 0 reported that sus- pension “is inevitable to-day,” which, on imquiry, proved to be false. The MAGNIFIED IMPORTANCE ‘which ramors of this kind get on the street just mow and their rapid circulation from hand to hand show that there 1s still a large bear purpose there, weeking a yet lower scale of values. Im adaition to this announcement a failure in Amsterdam, another in Vienna, the decline abroad of Missour: Kansas and ‘Texas bonds, and a general distrust 0} American securities in London, as shown by a de- cline in our bonds there, were used to affect the meral situation. It is only from our own local flaences that encouragement was found. This came from a new quarter, being the statement of A PROPOSED SETTLEMENT | on the part.of the creditors of Grinnell & Co. with that house. Inquiry in the best informed circles Geveloped these facts:—Thatit is proposed that ‘the large creditors who are secured by stock Col- teral shail take the stocks at such, prices as will e the estate in funcs wherewith to pay in full. For instance, that the 80,000 shares of Lake Shoro tock shall be taken at a price—perlaps 50 and per- eros higher. There is certainly areason why the large creditors should make such @ move; for its believed that some, if not many, of them have taken more than legal interest, and are thereby subject to the penalties of the Usury law, which involve the forieiture of the principal of a loan on which more than seven per vent has been charged. While it is mot believed that the Messrs. Grinnell would countenance the lea of usury, {t must, nevertheless, be remem- red that they have no voice in the matter aiter ap assignee has been appointed, who is obliged to make such plea, provided the estate cannot pay every creditor in juli, It is fair to remark that there is no longer a disposition to blame the Messrs. Grinnell for the course they have taken; for in the light of facts developed since their sus- pension itis apparent that no other course was Dpen to them. It was stated early in the day that the Union Trust Company had negotiated Mr, Vanderbilt’s aotes, given to them in settlement, abroad. Mr. Wesley, the Receiver, authorized o denial of this statement. REAL ESTATE, Postponement of “The Barney Bowers Tract” Sale. The result of yesterday's operations in the real estate market was disappointing. The offering of “the Barney Bowers tract” that had been looked forward to with great interest for some @ays, resulted in a iailure because of some difficulty among the Owners, the explanation of which is thus given. Dudley Field owns two-thirds of the property, and Nathaniel Jarvis, Jr., owns the other third, and they had mutually agreed to sell the pro” perty in order to effect a partition. The project went onsmoothly until yesteraay morning, when Mr. Field called upon Mr. John McClave and showed him a marked map, with prices representing in the aggre- gate about $20,000 less than the cost. Mr. McClave, 88 the representative of Mr. Jarvis, refused to allow the Lig edhe to be put up upon such conditions, and, im the absence of Mr. Jarvis, authorized the auc- tioneer, James M. Miller, to proceed to the Ex- change Salesroom and adjourn the sale. then stated that he would get another auctioneer gad sell the property on his own responsibility. He then proceeded to the salesroom and engaged Mr. Bleecker to sell the property, which was ac- cordingly put up, with the result as given below. This misunderstanding, of course, takes this sale out of the market asa testo! values. Alter the @isposition of a few lots the property was with- Grawn. The following are yesterday's Sales :— W YORK PROPRRTY—BY 4, D. MELLICK, JR., AND BROTHER, 0. 25x. lots s. w. corner Ist 6 block ; Jacob Voorhi ces 8,600 Son AND 100 ft. w. 4th ay., lot BY 4. 3.
