NEW. YORK HERALD, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1873—TRIPLE SHEN, THE WESTERN RING. ‘The Coming Fight Between Allen and Hogan. Something About the Unknown Aspirant— The Articles—Training—Betting. Sr. Louis, Mo., Oct. 15, 1873. The challenge of Ben Hogan to Tom Allen, made on the eve of the latter’s victorious battie with Mike McCool, has been one of the most sensational events in Western prize ring history of late years, and the excitement has rather increased than di- minishea since the maten was made. Allen has always ranked among the best men with his hands in the world, despite his defeat by Mace, while the terrible punishment which he administered to McCool three weeks ago seemed to stamp the chal- Yenge of a novice who had never entered the magic circle nothing more nor less than an ebullition of madness or over confidence. Hogan, however, promptly backed his défi with dollars, and those iis own, which has been regarded a sufficiently convincing proof of his being in earnest, and put himself into the hands of the McOool faction to ‘undergo his preparation, which was accepted as a proof that the fight was on the square. Indeed, I hear that there is bad blood between the two men, and it was the long-cherished hostility between the Allen and McCool partisans which niade the late ‘ght so sharp and sanguinary. The same cause may Jead on the eventful 28th to similar results, in the shape of what Harry Hotspur called “bloody noses and cracked crowns.” HOGAN’S HISTORY, After signing the articles (by which the men ‘agree to fight a fair, stand-up fight, according to the rules of the London prize ring, for $2,000, the fight to take place within fifty miles of this city, men to scale at catch weight), Hogan at once went Into training, under the superintendence of “‘Dub- din Tricks,” who bad acted as Mike MeCool’s mentor, Hogan, though he recently hails from Pittsburg, is an ola New Yorker, and was, ifl am not mistaken, born in the First ward. He has been by profession a trainer and gymnasium Keeper, and was concerned as trainer in some of the long-distance walks against Weston. When he came to this city he was in good rude condition, 80 that he has had no occasion for severe work or wasting. He will likely fight about fiiteen pounds ander Allen’s weight, He strips well; being big and muscular; 18 broad across the ‘shouiders, though not so deep in the ch than whom he 1s about two inches less in height. His length of reach is noticeable, he spars weil and in clever on his pins, aud 18 claimed to be Allen's rior in wrestling. Here his iriends think he have the better of the Englishman, claiming ma when the men come together Hogan’s ‘aDLLty to throw Allen will atone for the former's advan- tage in size and strength. He is about twenty- eight or thirty years of age, and nas never before sppeared in tue Oe TOM ALLEN, Allen is sufficiently well known to need no de- Scription. After defeating McCool he indulged in a ‘week of drinking, Which would not seem to have been dictated by prudence 1n view of his having so soon to tackle another man of unknown calibre and capabilities. However, this “lushing” once over Re set himsel! steadily’ to work, nominally under he care of Jack Madden, but really seeing to him- self; and having been in the pink of condition at the time of his fight and undergone no punisnment of fny consequence therein he should have plent, ist time to get himself ready for the all eventuul big with the late of Hogan and St. Louis CONFIDENT OF VICTORY. Both men are confident of victory. Allen pro- fessea his ability to “‘eat up”? Hogan in’ less than a quarter of an hour, and his friends are laying hats- full of money that he wins in ten and fliteen min- utes, while on the main event they are offering all sorts of odds up to two to one. Hogan is no less confident, and blows his own trumpet even more loudly than his friends do, A very heavy moneyed interest is at Hogan’s back, and all the bets that Allen’s friends will lay on their man at odds or on his winning in a short time are promptly taken up. Fores himself is investing very ak on the re- jult, and backs himself so freely and talks so loudly hen the more cynical of the city sports profess ‘ave doubts of sanity, and declare that he the toils ofaring of adroit sharpers, who are Nattering his vanity and quietly, through their agents, taking up all the bets he is laying on him- eat till there is no doubt that a good deal of nuine Support has been extended to the Pitts- urger, and that he will carry a good deal of any Achates, and one of the principal teers up of yorene fight, is Mike Ganley, the liquor lealer, who was once well known in Brooklyn, your City of Cpa chek mere he formerly resided— as @ promoter of Sere He declares that the ht will come o! i he has to carry the men to Canada or Kansas. His triends have een deal of money laid on his winning in short time, nd as Hogan is the younger man, and Allen has been doing considerable drinking, which might tell against him ina protracted struggle, his tac- tics are to go to close quarters at once and force she fighting. URUGUAY. Commercial Relations to the United States—Cabinet Missions te Brazil and Paraguay—Peace and Internal Devel- opment—Railways and Telegraphs. MONTEVIDEO, August 19, 1873. The extraordinary session of the Legislative Corps opened on the 5th inst., the Executive hav- 4ng submitted to its consideration several very 1m- portant matters. Among others is the ratification of the commercial treaty with the United States ‘which was sanctioned by our Congress during iis Jast session. CABINET MISSIONS. The President has solicited and obtained au- thority from the Permanent Commission to send a special envoy to Brazil and one to Paraguay, hav- Ang nominated for the first mission Dr. Don Carlos Maria Ramirez, and for the second Dr. Don José M. Siema y Carranza, two able and promising young lawyers and statesmen. The object of the misston to Brazil is said to be in relation to the debt of this Republic to the Empire, and to ad- just the question pending for some time past rel- ative to the free navigation of Lake Merim, situ- ated on the frontier of both countries, As regards the mission to Paraguay the intention 18 to cele- brate a treaty between the respective Republics. No definite information nas been received as to the result of the Mitre negotiations in Paragua; relative to the treaty with the Argentine Conie eration, which at one time assumed such a args hase ‘as to induce many to expect 0] pture. The war correspondent of the HERALD has re- ferred to the career of the “Scout of the Army of the Cumberland,’ who at least attained notoriety if not fame by her vicarious adventures in the early part of the war. The lady had droppea out of sight, as has a Western Governor and ex-United States Senator, but the former, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, comes to the front again before the Governor, The Chronicle says:— All persons who have travelled hiked the delightful stage road that connects Redwood City and Pescadero wil remember a lovely locality ni tame La Honda Junc- tion, an rly ‘Sausman’s.” It is situated in aldeep cauyon, which is thickly timbered with monster redwoods, gorio and La Honda creek: trout streams, Srrigh are’ midet frequented duriciy the, dsbing someon’ The coast range of mountains through which these creeks flow are well filled with quu:l, doves, deer and that La Honda is a thvorite resort for For the lnst four taoutha [rom ob my \ The surrounding country is well peopted by Hines of stages pass cach way Gaily, 40 that, taken altogether, the locality has conside able of busy hum. Sausman isa rough, warm-hearted old customer, wio has been through the Mexican war and is we:l known by many of the Mexican veterans in this city. He is one of the class of men who prefer a back- woods life, genial, who!le-: ceoaled, making Do pretensionto the possession of a classical education, Lut endowed with anample fund of good sense. The Chronicle proceeds to quote the following snyartiagmen’ published fn a San Francisco jour- nal:— A young widow lady, refined and educated, will take chatge of a gentleman's house in the city or country, and desires a home, Address Bila Chatiliier, Sun Fran: clsco Post oftice, Oi And continues: Whether he (Mr. Sausman) wason the lookout for an advertisement of that kind does not appear, but this much ig certain, thathe and his partner were keeping bach- elors’ hail, he attending to the store while Sayres drove the team and kept their well-assorted stock replenished. ge was increasing in the store, and to add to their labors they were having almost daily calls upon their Hospitality ‘by amateur angiers, who came but tor a day or two, and were unprovided with conveniences for camping out Sausman and Sayres did not pretend to fotely but so long as they had plenty to eat they could refuse no one & meal, their larder was beginning to seriously discommode our old.
