” BRAZIL. ; #arliamentary Preparation for pee * mient—Legislative Progress a ferm—The Question of the ps ‘Census Returns and Classification of Population, Rio JANETRO, Sept, 6, 1873. On the 10th inst. the Legisiative Chambers will ‘adjourn until the 3d of May, 1874, having been de- tained since the sist of August to vote the Rio Grande Railroad bill and the bill proionging the charter of the Bank of Brazil to 1900, and reducing the annual redemption of its bills to two anda half per cent. It is also expected that a bill em- powering the government to grant seven per cent guarantee on the cost of one railroad of not over 150 kilometres in each province will also pass now. ‘The Chambers have also enacted the National Guard reform, by which thts body is reduced toa similitude with the United States militia, a great ‘boon to the officer-beridden Brazilian people, but the Conscription bill to supply the army annually ‘with 5,000 conscripts is not far enough advanced to get through the Senate within the few remain- Ang days of the session. TELEGRAPH'S PROGRES! Doubfiess the last packet brought you from Para tidings of the successful laying of the telegraph cable from Pernambuco to Pard, completed August %; and another link—that from Montevideo to Chuy, on the Uruguayan and Brazilian frontier, has also been successfully deposited. The Pernam- buco and Rio link will be submerged within four or six weeks, to be followed by that from Para to to St. Thomas; but that from Rio to Chuy, neces- sary to complete the chain to the River Plate, will Probably be delayed until the close of the year. CHURCH AND STATE. The religious question remains in statu quo, though the preliminaries for a prosecution of the Bishop of Olinda are going on in the Supreme Tri- bunal. It is probable, however, that more energy ‘Will be ag pe by the government when it has ot rid of the Legtsiature. It is said that Baron de enedo, the London Minister, is to proceed to Rome to make representations to the Pope. POPULATION. ‘The results of the census of 1871 have at last been made known in regard to Rio Janeiro, The municipality eae of Rio “Janeiro had 274,972 souls, 3,880 of whom were free and 92,153 enslaved. The foreign population numbered 84,283, of whom only 21,398 were females. Only 1,928 non-Catholics ilved in the district, Of the 43,939 slaves only 505 were married. Of the whoie population, 175,487 cosld neither read nor write, and of 41,514 children between 6and 15 years ofage only 10,045 were at school. There were 200 priests, 66 of whom were foreigners, 14!Brazil- tan monks, and 60 foreign nuns. There were also about 30 Brazillian nuns, but these coulda not be brought to enumerate themselves, owing to the re- Boteerene of stating their age, which is against the rule of the Order. The Portuguese number 55,933; the French, 2,' 884; Italans, 1,738; Germans, 1,459; Spaniards, 1,459; English, 966; Chinese, 225; Americans, 211. ‘The | population of the city of Rio “was about 240,000, BOARDERS V WATTED. ae 1 [NICELY FURNIS ROOMS, WITH EXCEL « lent table, at $1 50 per day; $6 to $10 perweek, for families and singlo, at the Saratoga House, 180 and 152 Bleecker street, near Broadway.
