8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Amprovement in the Prices of Stocks. WALL STREET MORE HOPEFUL. The Corner Turned and a More Even Speculation Probable. MONEY EASIER. ‘Currency Coming Out and Being Invested in Stocks. COLD AT ITS LOWEST. Custom House Receipts and Disbursements. RAILROAD AND GOVERNMENT BONDS. WALL STREET, } Trunspay, Oct. 16—6 P. M. The prices of stocks to-day indicate that a cor- mer has been turned, and we are moving away from the misfortune which has been threatened. An advance has taken place along the entire line. The sharp decline of two or three days ago has ‘een followed by an equally sharp reaction, as predicted in the HERALD, and we have had a market {ull of profit to all who were long of stocks at low prices. The rise ranged from 1to5 per cent. It would not beat all strange ifit were in- creased to-morrow. Money made its appearance for investment in large quantities, and a cheerful Secling was everywhere exhibited. THE MONEY MARKET. At the close of the market the quotation for ¢mouey was only 3 per cent per annum, although earlier in the day it ranged from 1-16 to 3-16 per diem, While this change may be a part of some Speculative interest, itis not to be forgotten that ® large amount of capital is accumulating here, and that bankers and brokers are in a much better condition than they have been for several weeks. The people who are hoarding are represented by a Fapidly decreasing minority. The temptations of the market largely offset their caution and cowardice. The premium on greenbacks to-day Geclined, business being on the basis of % a Per cent, with a reduction at the close to 4% @ % per cent premium. The demand for foreign exchange was very limited to-day, as im- porters are not in funds to remit; the result of this ‘was a heavy reduction in rates. The bankers Jowered {their asking quotations 1 per cert— from 107 a 106 for sixty days’ sterling and from 108 8 107 for sight; but actual business was at L053 a 106 for long and 1063, a 107 for short. Commercial ills are in good supply and dull at 10434 a 105, THE GOLD MARKET ‘was depressed, the rates declining from 108ya 107% and closing at 108. These are the lowest Prices recorded since 1862, The rates paid for ‘carrying to-day were 1-16, 3-64, 3-32, +f, 7 and 1-32 per | cent, and for borrowing flat. The final rate was 1-32 per cent for carrying. Dearer—Pork and Lard Lower—Cotton Unsettled and Lower—Groceries Dull—Naval Stores and Petroleum Ouict. THURSDAY, Oct. 16—6 P. M, There was but little, ff any, improvement in com- mercial matters to-day, the further decline in gold and sterling exchange tending to render values still more uncertain. Business was moderate as a general thing, and the exceptions to the rule were rare, At the Produce Exchange there was not much change—flour and wheat were dull and in buyers’ favor, The receipts were heavy, but most of them were ten- dered to fill contracts, and in some cases wheat was bought for this purpose, vVorn was heavy, though there was no especial change. Oats were scarce and decidedly higher in conse quence. Whiskey waa easier. Pork remained nominal, Lard was dull and easier. Cotton was pressed for sale, mainly on account of large receipts in prospect, and prices declined fully 4c. per Ib. Groceries were generally duil, with a downward inclination to values. Naval stores were notoffered freely, and the market was generally, particularly for spirits, well sustained, Correx.—No transactions were reported apart from the usual business in jobbing lois, and values remain wholly nominal tor cargo invoices, which are neglected.
