FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL GLOOM AMONG THE STOCKS, Further Decline in Prices and Large Sales. SEVERAL FAILURES REPORTED. Wall Street Again Excited and the Bears at Work. NO REAL CAUSE FOR ALARM. The General Condition of the Country Improving—The Trouble of Local Origin. GOLD STRONGER. Advance in the Rate of the Bank of England from 5 to 6 Per Cent. MONEY, BONDS, &C. WALL STREET, } TURSDAY, Oct. 14—6 P. M. The situation in Wall street to-day was not en- couraging to those who have hoped for a calm, substantial market—a market that would neither provoke unhealthy speculation nor present features of danger. Prices continued their decline even from the low figures of yeaterday, until the aspect became disheartening and the most direful prognostications filled the air. Stocks were thrown overboard without regard to cost. The “bears” Tevelled in an opportunity to sell “short.” The “turning point” seemed to be nowhere in sight. The street dealings during the close of the Stock Exchange, in the midst of panic, offered an in- finitely surer anchorage. In all this the consider- ate and conservative observer will recognize the sudden development of a condition of affairs that may prove full of the elements of disaster, for even Wall street cannot be ex- pected to safely withstand two such successive shocks to the values in which it dealsas marked the 20th of September and is shaking the neighborhood to-day. It was a sabject of earnest hope and of equally earnest expression in the HERALD that the reopening of the Stock Exchange Would be followed by 4 STEADY THOUGH FIRM MARKET, which should show no sharp decline and nostrongly speculative advance—in other words, that a me- dium line would be observed until the settled conat- tion of the rest of the country justified a return to the old routine. Prices of stocks were already com- paratively low; some of the suspended firms were resuming business; confidence was returning, and it was an eminently advantageous opportunity for those who possessed money to purchase, pay for and carry away their shares. The events of the last three days, however, seem to show the exist- ence of an element who are disposed to press the market to the wall and, by the employment of every means that can create doubt or weakness—a failure, a lawsuit or the most improbable of rumors—carry prices down among depths such as have not been touched for many years. Measur- ably they have succeeded, as will be demonstrated in many instances by reference to a chart of stock quotations for the last ten years, It is dificult to believe, however, that such an unprecedented COMBINATION OF CIRCUMSTANCES can exist for many days. With a country full of currency and only a tight money market to con- tend with; with grain hurrying forward to Europe and gola coming from London by millions; with our banking institutions thus far confident in their strength and banking facilities being wisely dis- tributed among the various representatives of com- merce; with greenbacks at a premium of 44 and 3¢ per cent, as against 114 per cent less than a week ‘ago; surely under such an array of favoring condi- tions there is nothing in the aspect of affairs pre- sented to-day in tne noisy surroundings of the Stock Exchange that need excite glarm. Wall street, indeed, at the present juncture represents nothing but itself, isa creature of only local im- port, moves responsive to influences that exist only within its own organism, and hence ought not to reflect beyond its own confines the strength or weakness by which it may be excited, Just now it is UNDERGOING A SPASM, sconvulsion too powerful to last long, yet thor- oughly debilitating as regards its effect. As we have said belore, recuperation must logically fol- jow, for the patiens is not one that can die. It is announced that the dividend on the New York Central stock will be paid to-morrow, at the banking house of Duncan, Sherman & Co, and the dividend on the scrip certificates still outstanding, hereto- fore paid at the Union Trust Company, will also be Paid at the oMce of Duncan, Sherman & Co, If this should prove true, it will deprive many eroakers of the capital on which they have worked for the last three or four days to depress the Market, and possibly it may give a brighter aspect to affairs. Three or four failures were announced at the Board, the particulars of which will be found elsewhere, They were not of a character, however, to add to the general demoralization. The direct CAUSES FOR THE DEPRESSION to-day are doubtless to be found, among other things, in the calling in of loans on stocks by foreign bankers, who, in view of the advance in the Bank of England rate, preferred to put their currency in gold, This naturally forced sales, over- joaded the market, carried down prices and alded the bears in bringing about what some persons Would call “a panic.” The extremes of the decline Tange irom 1 to9 per cent; but the course of the market can only be fully understooa by consulting the oMcial quotations published in the following solumns, The total dealings amounted to 150,000 shares, and, a8 before stated, the prices were in Many instances lower than those touched in the original panic, The greatest decline was in West- ern Union, which broke from 5734 to 5144, rallied to 64, dropped to 483, and closed at 48, Lake Shore rose from 64 to 66%, receded to 6344, recovered to 66, declined to 59% and left off at 60, New York Central fell off from 881% to 8254, and rallied near the close to 835%. These were the principal features, but a sharp decline took place in some of the other shares, THE MONEY MARKET. Money to-day, 80 far as its uses by stock brokers Js concerned, was not in free circulation, and its tates were notably interfered with by the sudden Muctuations of the markot. The bulk of business, however, was done on the basis of 1-16 a % per cent per diem, loans being effected only on first class securities. Greenbacks, in the early part of the Gay, commanded a premium of % a 3 per cent over Certified checks, but subsequently advanced to % a@% percent. In commercial circles less diMculty ‘was experienced, and we note larger accommoda- tions by banks and discount brokers, facilities depending entirely on the class of paper offered, Foreign exchange was firmer in the morning, and the bankers advanced their rates to 107 and 103, but there was no business over 100}, and 10754, while at the close prime bills could be bought at 106%; and 107%, THE GOLD MARKET ‘was somewhat more active to-day. The price ad- vanced, probably in sympathy with the rise in the te of the Bank of England to 6 per cent, which jed to@ covering of the short interest that had Deen put out, The action of the English Bank, hoWover. Was not unexvected, because It was-a NEW YORK HERALD, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 187: natural consequence of the unusual overfiow of gold to America, The unsettled condition of affairs in the Stock Exchange likewise tended to strengthen the price of gold, It is also stated that some of the German bankers have called in their currency loans and put their balances in gold, while other parties have preterred this solid Species of investment at low figures to stocks and bonds, In other words, with gold even at 1083¢ and 109, the hoarding process has already begun, ‘This is not a significant argument in favor of im- mediate specie resumption, The rates paid for carrying to-day were 6, 5, 1-32 and 7 per cent to flat for borrowing. ‘The final rate was 6 per cent for carrving. The prices of gold to-day were :— he) The operations of the Gold Exchange Bank to-day were as follows:— Gold balances. . Currency balances. . Gross clearances... THE FOREIGN MARKETS, The feature of the day in the foreign market was the advance by the Bank of England of the Tate of interest tg 6 per cent, which was necessi- tated by the large exportation of gold, and was an anticipated fact; but the rise 1s not likely to stop. One hundred and twenty-five thousand pounds in bullion was shipped from Liverpool to New York to-day by the steamship Abyssinia, Two hundred and ninety-five thousand pounds in bullion was syipped from Southampton for New York to-day by the steamship Rhein, The amount of bullion withdrawn from the Bank of England is £62,000, nearly all of which was for ship- ment to America. Consols for money are quoted at 9234; for account, 92} a 925;. The rate of money at the Stock Exchange on government securities is 834 percent. Erie advanced during the day from 3934 and closed at 404. Paris despatches quote rentes at 57f. 25c.—a decline since yesterday. TUESDAY, Oct, 14, 1873, There was no perceptible betterment in the commercial situation to-day. On tne contrary, distrust and apprehended trouble prevailed quite generally, and, as a consequence, business was curtailed and restricted to the narrowest limits, Transactions in merchandise were, as a general thing, confined to the most pressing requirements, buyers apparently preferring the risk of post- poning their purchases to a later day, in the expectation of a lower basis atan early day. Duiness was not confined to any particular branch of business, but was general, dry goods, hardware, boots and shoes and other interests being materially affected by the dulness On ‘Change things were In nowise improved. Flour was dull, irregular and decidedly lower, Wheat was fairly active and closed steady at unchanged prices. Corn and oats were lower, but rather more active. Whiskey was easier. Pork was nominal. Lard was quiet and easy, Groceries were for the most part nominal. There was a slight improvement in the demand for jobbing lots of coffee, but in a lurge way there was no disposition to buy. ‘Cotton again suffered a decline of 3c. @ }ge. per Ib. chiefy in future deliveries, Asus were in moderaie request, at $8 25 for pots.
