120 FRAUDS oof BROOKLYN. The Bond Robbery in the Comptroller’s Office and the Post Office Defalcation—The Losses Increasing—Park Bonds Missing— Kessler Committed to Await Examination—Money Or- der Clerk Young Still at Large. The bond clerk of the Comptroller's office, Rudolph Keasier, who was arrested on Friday last, charged with stealing two bonds of the valae of $1,000 each, was arraigned before Justice Walsh yesterday. The counsel for the prisoner asked for an adjournment, as he had not succeeded in pro- curing the attendance of a certain witness for whom they had been in quest, The Court grantea “the motion, whereupon counsel moved that his Client be admitted to bail After some argument mpon the subject between the counsel, Mr. Keady, ‘and Corporation Counsel De Witt, Justice Walsh ‘admitted Kessler to bail in the sum of $5,000, The examination was set down for ‘Tuesday morniug neXt, at ten o'clock. Before @ bondsman who had come forward in the interest -Of the accused could sign the necessary documents Mr. De Witt, who had absented himself for a few | minutes, returned and said, addressing the Court, “Your Honor, I have just been in the Comptroller's office and he’ finds that there are five Park bonds Maissing in addition to what is already gone, Under those circumstances it would be well tu consider the matter of bailing this defendant.” Mr. Keady—Well, what o! it? Supposing there have been more bonds found to be missing, what Aas that got to do with this case? 1 suppose there | ‘will be more found yet. Justice Walsh thereupon declined to admit the prisoner to bail and committed Kessler to the com- Mon jail to await examination. STATEMENT OF THE PURCHASER OF THE BONDS. A FATHER FOR THE POOR. Confirmation of Catholic Children by Archbishop McCloskey on the Scheol- ship Mereury and Randall's and Hart’s Islands, ‘The work of charity towards the poor so long performed almost exclusively by the Church has in the latter days been undertaken by the State, with the avowed object, so far as youthful paupers are concerned, of training them to become the inle- ritors of the liberties and privileges she has to bestow, But the members of the Church still enter the hospitals and almshouses of the State (when they are permitted to «do 80) and bring up the little ones in the way of truth and justice. From the time when Randall’s [sland and Hart’s Island became homes for the suffering voor, the priests and the members ofthe St. Vincent de Paul Society have regularly visited the children and adults thereon Sunday after Sunday, preaching and teaching, Hence 1¢ comes that every year there are 200 persons, on an average, prepared for First Communion or for the Sacrament of Confirmation, Yesterday being the day appointed for the confirmation of the little ones, at eight o’clock the boat Minnahanonck started from the foot of Twenty-sixth street, bav- ing on board the Most Reverend Archbishop McCloskey, the Rev, Father Duranquet, S. The venerable Arch- bishop, arrayed in the appropriate vestments, ad- dressed them substantially as follows : THE ARCHBISHOP’S ADDRESS, on this pleasant'and beautiful morning, which is bright to you in more senses than one. You are to enioy on this day a privilege anda favor that you never bad besore, and never can enjoy again. For as you are about to re ceive the sacrament of confirmation, you will obtain many choice gifts from God that He has not hitherto be- stowed upon you, and you cannot again become pos- sessed of then in'the sdme manner, because the sacre- ment can be received only once during life. in recety- ing this sacrament you receive the Holy Ghost, in order | that you may be made pertect Christians and soldiers ot Jesus Curist. They were given to} Kessler, the bond clerk, to be cancelled. | An examination made yesterday showed that all of them had been cancelled except two, Nos. 499 and 500, which were the bonds sold to Mr. Broisted. Two other bonds of the same lot, Nos. | 349 and 350, had been marked cancelled on the | books, when they were not cancelled.
