GREENPORT, L. I. Whe Social Life of Long Island Summer Retreats. MARRIED OR NOT MARRIED. The Operations of the Beautiful Belles and Heart-Stricken Cavaliers. SOME REFLECTIONS THEREON. Young Men of $2,000 a Year, Beware! Be- _ Ware \--She’s a Fooling Thee ! THE AVERAGE YOUNG LADY. GREENroRT, L. I., Sept. 3, 1873 If that Diz fire which Methodist parsons say Is about to consume the world, because the world 1s giniul, should leave Greenport standing alone on the surface of the earth as a sort of Noah's ark, T confess I would readily become an inhabitant for “the seasom”—not otherwise. The world is very large and life is very short; hence I have my chaice Of localities, and Greenport is far from being at the head of the list, Ido notaver that Greenport is not a lively place; itis. There are several hotels in the place; several yachts generally in port; still bathing, boating, tishing and firting. Itre- minds me of some of those Norman watering places 80 admirably described by Mr. Grenville Murray, where the spectacle is made up of A MAN AND A WOMAN, ‘This is all there is to the place—the man and the woman—and there are some very persistent and gay of the former, as there ure some very gushing and saccharine of the latter, We have the usual number of marriageable damsels—beautiful and poor—and plenty of would-be-married rakes who, if not beautiful, are rich. Of course these two classes of humanity readily coalesce, ana I have no doubt they have been inaugurating a business which will ere many months prove profit- able to the clergyman and undertaker. Now let me introduce the reader to Miss Smith. Miss Smith is of Brooklyn. Nearly all the young ladics ‘who come down to this end of the isiand are from Brooklyn, and, being irom Brooklyn, she is of course handsome. MISS SMITH take asatype. She is pretty asa peach ay but her mouth, and that has suffered enlargement, I fear, from a too habitual use of the tongue. I wonder often at the perpetual volubility of the Brooklyn young ladies. I cannot account for it; but paren 1 have never been an-accurate studen’ of history. Well, charming Miss Smith soon dnds out there is a stranger in the house—another gen- ‘tleman bas arrived. She goes up stairs, runs her powder ball over the bridge of her Nose, pastes down her eyebrows, bites her bps for color, pinches her cheeks for crimson, loosens her corsets for sighs, and, select- ing her largest Jan, bounces down stairs ‘and ap. pears on the porch. She is sweet-looking, I am Wiliing to etl and her wicked glances repulse no man. Mr. Jones, an acquaintance, is near at hand, and, coming up to you, says: “Why, my dear iellow! you, here! The last one in the world I dreamed of seeing. Come right along, I'll introduce you to Miss Smith—prettiest giriin the house. By Jove, she’s a crusher!” RoBiINson—Don't caie if 1 do, Mirs Smith pours prettily, triés to look’shy, and lowers her enormous fan. “Miss Smith, permit me to introduce an old friend, Mr. Robinsun—a charming gentieman.” Pe oad @m happy to make your acquaint- aitiss Smith bows ana shows her pretty teeth, “Are you going to stay longin Greenport, Mr. Robinson (”’ SHREWD MAN OF THE WORLD ‘that Robinson is; he knows that this ieading query means the direst of calamities, being courted by a young girl ‘with a view to matrimony,” so he line Meuiately answers, “Am going to-morrow.” Miss Smith not only bites her lip at tuis outrageous rejoinder, but also bites her ian, Robinson gets oif some of ms old speeches about “how sad itis to part just as one teels that ne has met somebody who May change the whole tenor of his lite ;”” and then Miss Smith and Mr. Robinson, leaving Jones in the Jureh, retire arm-in-arm to an uoceupied corner of the balcony. They crow to be friends, and therelore confidential. Miss Smith iniofins Robinson in Whispers, and telis him that he must not tell, “that the oid ladies in the house are jeariul gossips. You Pig ‘Oo With more than ene young lady at a time; if you do you will ropped by all.’? Teenie ponders and smokes, and the little Brooklyn lady becomes his iriend, bat he does not so readily becoine her apiancée Itis now the morrow. Miss Smith has to cat Other fish in her net; so poor Kobinson, havi wandered away, and having erred and strayed, like a lost sheep, makes other acquaintances and embeilishes his old commonplaces for some iresh Brooklyn beauty. In turn she becomes an alien, and thus he goes through the whole gamut until he has done “the pretty” to all, and then be is in condition to compare notes and say, “Eureka!” if that can mean “i have found her!” Oitentimes Robinson comes back to Miss Smith, Decause, having left her, sie gives him a bad re pu- tation, which 18 a sort of barricade against the af- fections of the other ladies, Sometimes Robinson does*better, and manages to monopolize some fresh young lady who has just alighted irom tbe train. Then he is in clover. such is THE FATE OF THE STRANGER on arriving here, if he be unmarried, and tf he be married be will tind plenty of appreciation. 1am aware in saying this that I ain writing up the place, not writing it down, and I should not wona- der at all if next Saturday night’s boats would bring @ cargo of wife hunters and husbands search- ing for single blesseduess in ey, and quality lite dreamed of in my philoso} ny I confess somewhat to be a student of people in the concrete, and since I have been here } have in- duiged in social studies as far as compatible with leisure. This ilusband-wite business, generally so thriving at the retreats, has engaged my passing attention, and for the benefit not only of the family embarrassed with the care of a marriageable daughter, but also for the benefit of the salaried man of say $2,000 a year, 1 will recapitulate a few tacts, THE AVERAGE YOUNG LADY, and I hope every one of those charming ladies whom Ihave had the pleasure of meeting while here will assert themselves above the average, is neither a spinster nor coy sweet sixteen, She knows some music—and that indifferently. She dances well, or, ii she does not, she dances enough to make "you think she does, Her smail talk fs limited—siang being preferred to harmless badinage, aud on robuster topics she is siient. She is pretty, ant- mated, amiable, as fond of admiration ani brass Duttons as an Irishman is of potatoes or a French- man of red wine. She is always ready to jail in love and then fail out again, and THE YOUNG MAN WITH TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR Only needs a little assiduity to call her his own. Now this man with $2,000 @ year is worthy of no- tice. He affects small yachting, wears a biue shirt once or twice a week, which he takes care to bntton with diamond studs, reat or not, and withal 18 a quite supportable fellow. The mamma of the ‘oung lady in the market is convinced that he ts he coming man, and tells Lucy so; and Lucy puts on her neatest smile, her most spotless linen, her best bootees and poses while playing eroguet or giegling on the piazza, eem—notiing more— jows acquaintance, and “spooning,” after having its day, is succeeded by an imaginary love, which, followed up to the thitd act, is marriage; and this as the clergyman’s work. { would not utter a word to cast sorrow over unions #0 spontaneously formed as these are at the watering places, iff were not convinced—nay, if I did not know that they almost always breed misery and di appointment, and that the clergyman is but the forerunner of a divorce suit or an wndertaker, The business im detail and sumination is THOROUGHLY SELPISTE and artificial. The parents, not the young lady, re Oltenest to blame; they teach her to practice er wiles and arts, The youth, who hus studied the fluctuations of gold more than he has the vacillations of the litunan heart, is a ready victim, and two young people are soon wedded to each ovher for life, to discover, alter a few months, that it is happier to die than to live, Tofter these’ com ments because I see avout me all these baneiul anttsocial processes in full operation, Itis not at Greonport alone that the scenes I describe take place, but they constituve the feature of the pare summer retreat. The American young ie leaves hoine full of the object of her mater- aily taught life—to be married—und she initiates that movement If she can. THE WEW CHEESE AND BUTTER EXCHANGE, The merchants of the Butter and Cheese Ex- change of New York willinangurate their new com- mercial institution on Wednesday next, Sep- tember 10, at two o'clock P.M. Erastus Brooks will deliver an address, Horatio Seymour, Prest- dent of the New York State Dairymen's Asso- ciation, and other distinguished gentiemen tdentl- fed with this interest and that of commerce have signified their intention to be present, A large Lumber of invitations have been issued, and @ Dicasant time is expected, ‘A —FOR SALE, New ‘YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER ’.0, 1873.—QUADRUPLE. Isiands to the Breton coast will be fllustrated from deowments scarcely known hitherto. PROFESSOR SEELEY, the Oxford professor of mod- ern history, will puviieh @ life of Stem, the great Prussian reformer of this century. A greater man than Prince Bismarck will here be commemorated. THE CHBVALIER Riot has published a memoir of the painter Correggio, which completely contra- dicts the previous notions concerning the career and circumstances of the great artist. Mk. James N. BLYTH has added to the curiosities Of literature a book entitied “Notes on Beds and Bedding, Historieat and Aueedortal,” The excel lence of early rising receives a severe set-back ip some of its anecdotes, and we are gravely assared | in the following stanza that tue bed ts & good place for literary compositio: Herotatue wrote most an bed. rcherand, a learned physic fan, Declares ihe clockwort of the head Goes best in that reclined posiion. DR. ENGLANDER has written “The Abolition of the State,” which is mainly a defence of the radi- cal opinions of M. Proudhon, ‘THe “MONASTICON HIBRANICUM,” @ history of we abbeys, priories and other religious houses in Ire- Jand, will soon appear from the press of N. B. Kelly, of Dublin, A New Book, by Nicholas Pike, the United States Consul at Mauritius, or the Isle of France, # much praised by the London journais, The author a close observer and an enthusiastic naturalist, The book is entitled “Subtropical Rambles in the Land of the Aphanapteryx,” and the Athenmum says the author “seema never tired painting pic- turesque scenes of subtropical lite and vegetation in glowing language.” Says the Saturday Ke- view :—“To the tastes of a student of science Mr. Pike adds the practical sense of @ man 0: business and the shrewdness of @ man of the world, The rich vegetation, waterfalls, caverns and wild forest lands of Mauritlus open up inexhaustible sources of pleasure and admiration."’ Mr. THOMAS WricuT has edited and the British government has published two volumes of “The Anglo-Lutin and Latinical Poets and Epigramma- tists of the Twelfth Century,” They are of great value and interest, and give more insight into the period they Ulustrate than @ dozen echoes like our current histories of the Middle Ages. THERE will be a léss number of poems, novels, books of science and sermons printed in England during the season of 1873-'4 than ever previously. Everybody is coming to the United States to lec- ture. Our English cousins thus bring down two birds with one literary stone. They come here to lecture to us and go back to lecture about us, Dr. KINGSLEY, brother of Charles Kingsley and the original of “the Doctor” in the book called “The Earl and the Doctor,” has started on another adventurous expedition—this time with Lord Dun- raven, The Yellowstone River will be visited by them, and many out-of-the-way regions, in which, if there were no rifle, there would be no dinner. Now THAT THE Sap Fare of Captain Hall has added another discouragement to North Pole ex- peditions, it would be well to revive the South Pole explorations, in which the United States won some of her earliest trophies, and where the fleid is 80 much more accessible than at the North, and no less promising of good results for science. The importance of South Sea exploration has lately been set forth with sulguiar ability by Dr. G. New- mayer, of Berlin, in “Die Erforschung des Std- Polar Gebetes,” which presents an admirable his- torical sketch in the South Polar region, and which, taken in connection with the list of works in this department, puts the reader in possession of all existing materiais for a knowledge of tue field and of the results thus far ascertained. A Work THAT WiL1 Excite interest among lovers of politics is promised for next November. It is entitled, “Wilkes, Sheridan, Fox: Popular Leaders under George LIL,” and contains an account o! the opposition in the latter part of the last century. ‘The author, W. F. Rae, has collected particulars re- lating to the government prosecution of Wilkes that have not hitherto been published.
