10 A WOMAN'S STORY. The Bistory of the Centre Street a |é tempted Warder and Suicide. Ya Mother and Three Children Haunted by a Fiend—Houscless, Penniless and Bereft, Secking for Work. Wistrecht’s Preparation for His Bloody Work. Yery ie in the Room Where the Shots Were / Fired—Dusband and Wife in Bellevue, * another example was furnished yesterday morn- “mg, @ few minutes after midnight, of the frenzy and depravity produced by lasciviousness and a Mfe of debauchery. The statement of the ultimate Tesult of @ continued life of badness does not take many words to tell. In this case, as in most Others, it was the usual attempt at murder, and ‘then the attempt at suicide. But there is a long story of crime and grief and patient endurance to narrate before the culmina- tion of the evil deeds of the weuld-be murderer ‘was reached in this double crime, and the story ‘would begin as far back as seventecn years ago, nd would require to travel through @ daily Mife of misery for one of two persons, from her girlhood to ber womanhood; and for the other, an almost datly life of febauchery from early manhood to the hour he sbot his wife ina tenement room yesterday morn- ing. Such a tale as this, however, need not be told again, for it is too familiar to most people who read the records of crime, and it is scarcely neces- Bary in a case like this todo more than to state the facts of the crime to bring the whole previous his- tory of the criminal and bts victim in their daily lives before the imagination. THE WOMAN'S STORY IN THE HOSPITAL, Seventeen years ago Christina Weiskricker was ® beautiful girl of fifteen, a bionde, and the only danghter of her parents, who were simple, humble people, residing in Cologne, Germany. Henry Wisbrecht was then # young man, about twenty-seven years of age, residing in the same place, and a cabinetmaker by trade. By ali the artifices he could command he had gained the affections of the girl, and, belng ® fellow of generally lewd propensities, he had from the start resolvea to seduce her. Having taught the child how to err he had but little dimi- culty in persuading the girl of fifteen how to sin, and the result was that he seduced her and that she gave birth to a child. Everything that the aged parents could do was done to save the unfortunate girl from the clutches of her destroyer, but again he succeeded in eluding their vigilance, and, under promises of marriage, nother child was born. The girl being still young, her friends believed that, were she to go to America, there might still be some hope that Wis- brecht might marry her, and to this end advised her. Money was’ procured for her, and by a secret understanding both left Germany and arrived, aiter a lapse of some months ofa ship's voyage across the ocean, in New York, After a short time the girl succeeded in inducing her lover to marry her, and the usual nuptial formula was gone through with. But being thus tied dawn Wisbrecht soon longed for freedom, and this longing appeared at first in Ins absence from his home, and, later on, in a par- tial ill-treatment of his wife. Very soon the. man’s real character developed itself more Tully and intensely, and his wife soon learned that she had been discarded in her husband's affections, and that night after night the gay young man of thirty was spending his evenings and part of his nights inthe company of other women. The old, early sin, she knew, would be thrown in ther face were she to assert herself as became her position as a wile; and, though she heard from ime to time of the evil habits of her husband, sbe ventured upon no reproach, patientiy believing that time might cure him of evil ways in which she knew he been travelling ever ce he was & boy. But-the waiting was ALL IN VAIN and time ently brought to het, migty alter night, the return of her husband about two or three w’clock in the morning, Kicks and bruises to her Dody and foul and filthy language to her ears. A growing family did not alter this state ot affairs, Mor did remonstrance nor the contempt of those who knew of his treatment of bis wife change the @ebauchee in the least. It became a notorious fact that he was a man addicted to the crime of treating his wife badly, and as the years went by there was no improvement. It is only when pa- Uence is broken "down that the public ear ever hears of the weary life that pea re upon it and has succumbed at last; and so in this case, the woman could no longer bear the heavy load that had been thrown upon her. For nearly fonrteen years she had been gradually coming to the point of rebellion. “ During these years she had pore. eleven children, f whom ten died, leaving now three living. ‘ith tais series of burdens and misfortunesit is not & surprise that the time had come when endurance ‘Was no longer possible, so, in April, 1872, the wo- “man resolved to leave her brutal husband and seck @ shelter and support for herself and the three ehildrem elsewhere. Alter consulting with the few friends who had kindly offered and given her synipatby during the more recent years of her hard life, she determined upon going to Bridgeport, Cont., and thither she went, taking the children with her. At Bridgeport she speedily obtained work a8 @ laundress, and er a few weeks got @mployment also jor the two girls and the boy. They remained here fora year, liv- ae ha) happily, all of them earning, and having even an they wanted of the necessities of lite. ne ¢ wife was content, the childen even more than ae but In an evil hour the husband again coveted them, as if the devil prompted him to destroy the little share of peacefulness that nis wife was i erate. During the year that the wife and ren were awa: sbrecht, as his wile al- Seges, cohabited with another woman, who gave birth to a child, and it as after this that he went ‘to Connecticut and persuaded the wile to retarn to him, telling her a story of a future connubial ‘bliss in store for her, which the Co hs Date woman only too readily believed. In April last she and the elidren returned ‘to New York, and the whole fi went to reside St 515 Washington street. But after a very short time Wisbrecht returned to iis old ways. He be- - again to come home late, to beat his wile and yo use abusive Jan; age towards her. When asked turther where he had got so much money to py for it he replied that it was the other man who paid the money. Very Crd afterwards, wes NM: Mrs. Wisbrecht met the wife of the other em: ployé, referred to above, she ascertained, so she St that the two men had stolen the wood employ yers, ‘This was a blow to her all Wisbrecht’s badness, he had never before, and with a feehle hope—feeble trom soleneee of her own mind, as well asfrom the oa ih of her husband’s character—she de- Sermined to threaten him with exposure of this crime whenever his til treatment of her again excyssive.
